Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Era uma vez...Algumas histórias: as versões sobre o MST do Pontal do Paranapanema em dois jornais diários
No full textEste trabalho teve como objetivo compreender e discutir os discursos sobre o Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST) da região do Pontal do Paranapanema, no estado de São Paulo, presentes nos jornais Folha de São Paulo e O Imparcial, de Presidente Prudente (SP), entre os anos 1990 e 2000.
Para tanto, inicialmente buscamos localizar o MST como parte do tecido histórico da enorme e violenta desigualdade na distribuição de terras no Brasil, e como herdeiro de vários outros movimentos sociais em torno da luta pela terra no país. No interior desse conjunto, a escolha da região do Pontal do Paranapanema (SP) se deu por ser onde a presença do MST mais causou impactos e mudanças nas relações sociais de uso e propriedade da terra.
Para compreender os discursos sobre o MST do Pontal do Paranapanema através dos jornais diários, consideramos estes (os jornais) como documentos de domínio público, nos quais se veiculam e presentificam-se múltiplas dialogias e produções de sentido acerca dos temas que noticiam diariamente. Tal pressuposto exigiu-nos contemplá-los, simultaneamente, como: a) veículos de transmissão de diversas vozes, oriundas de diversos lugares e com diversos posicionamentos sobre os temas que noticiam (no caso, o MST do Pontal); b) como atores sociais com voz e posicionamentos próprios sobre tais temas; e c) como lugares de diálogo com os leitores - co-autores ativos dos sentidos e histórias contadas pelos jornais. Mostram-se, portanto, como espaços de expressão da dinâmica das tensões, conflitos, negociações e lutas hegemônicas e contra-hegemônicas de um tempo e lugar.
Porém, os jornais não são iguais, e esses elementos simultâneos de aspectos que os compõem configuram produtos finais diferentes. Assim, o MST mostrado na Folha de São Paulo e o mostrado em O Imparcial são significativamente diferentes, uma vez que ambos os jornais têm linhas editoriais diferentes, falam com leitores também diferentes (a Folha, com um perfil de leitores mais heterogêneo por ser um jornal de circulação nacional, sendo O Imparcial de circulação regional), e presentificam vozes oriundas de lugares diferentes. Para a Folha, o MST do Pontal assume várias características, indo do movimento composto por massas de excluídos que lutam por um pedaço de chão até um movimento de esquerda radical com articulações com movimentos guerrilheiros, como o Sendero Luminoso. Entre estes dois pólos, uma gama de matizes são encontradas. Prevalece, contudo, definições que o colocam como parte de um mundo atrasado, pré-capitalista - como o âmbito rural do Pontal - que deve ser superado com políticas de modernização instituídas pelo governo. Para O Imparcial, o MST é posto no lugar do inimigo da região do Pontal e da nação, e deve ser extinguido. As diversas nomeações que recebe e as diversas vozes que falam dele confluem invariavelmente para esta definição.
Necessário ressaltar, contudo, que não é intenção desta pesquisa apreender a verdade essencial do que está dito e dos sentidos produzidos nos jornais sobre o MST, já que os leitores são partícipes ativos e co-autores dos sentidos e histórias neles contadas. E é aqui que nos posicionamos como pesquisadores: como leitores dos jornais. Isso significa interpretá-los, e para tanto utilizamo-nos inevitavelmente de um repertório interpretativo construído em um lugar sócio-cultural e histórico, o lugar do pesquisador. Sendo assim, nos cabe, através de uma atenta e sistemática leitura, continuar o diálogo com os jornais, recontar suas histórias sobre o MST do pontal, buscando desvelar as vozes que falam e como falam, os posicionamentos e lugares de onde produzem seus argumentos, as suas intencionalidades, os intertextos, as redes de poder e contra-poder. Considerando ainda os discursos como práticas discursivas, ou seja, como ação social que dá sentido e materialidade ao mundo e às coisas, entendemos que participar destas conversas é contribuir para retomar o debate sobre a questão agrária e o significado do MST e, deste modo, contribuir para a reconstrução da realidade deste lugar, dos horizontes possíveis deste enredo
O Racismo Nosso de cada Dia : contradições de uma sociedade que se apresenta racialmente democrática
No full textEste artigo tem como objetivo traçar reflexões teórico-conceituais sobre a temática do racismo no Brasil. Partindo da obra de decolonialistas latino americanos assinalamos, inicialmente, que as matrizes históricas do racismo no país são desdobramentos da colonização europeia e do pensamento eurocêntrico na modernidade. Em seguida, discutimos a história do racismo no Brasil, enfocando-a em períodos após a abolição da escravidão marcados, especialmente, pela ideologia do embranquecimento, num primeiro momento, e pelo mito da democracia racial, a partir da era Vargas. Neste tópico, trouxemos dados acerca da grave situação de desigualdade social entre negros e brancos que persiste no país. Buscamos, assim, nos somar com vozes ético-críticas que reivindicam que a violência desta experiência cotidianamente vivida pela maior parcela da população não mais seja desqualificada e naturalizada, mas explicitamente revelada. Apenas desta maneira, medidas efetivas contra o racismo estrutural poderão ocorrer, afastando esse insidioso espectro que reincide constantemente nas sociabilidades brasileiras.This article has the objective of defining theoretical and conceptual reflexions about the issue of racism in Brazil. Starting from the work of Latin-American de-colonialists, we pinpointed, initially, that the historical matrices of racism in the country are repercussions of the European colonization and of the modern eurocentric thinking. Subsequently, we discussed the history of racism in Brazil, focusing on periods after the slavery abolition marked, specially, by the ideology of whitening, in a first moment, and by the myth of racial democracy, starting from the Vargas Era. In this topic, we brought data about the grave situation of social inequality between black and white people which persists in the country. Therefore, we aimed to attach ourselves to ethical and critical voices that claim that the violence daily faced by the majority of the population is not discredited and naturalized anymore, but explicitly revealed. Only through this, effective measures against structural racism will occur, averting this insidious specter which constantly reoccurs in Brazilian sociabilities

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
