Inga lessamheter, ingen orsak för min person! : Johan Erik ”Lim-Johan” Olsson (1865–1944) Konstnärsmyt och reception

    No full text
This thesis aims to examine the art, reception, discovery, and recognition of the naïve painter Johan Erik Olsson (1865-1944), also known as “Lim-Johan”. The thesis is based on a comparative and reception-historical analysisand aims to explore and discuss the perception of the art of Lim-Johan has changed and the myth of the artist. This study explores art exhibitions, characteristics presented in exhibition catalogues, and art criticism. Lim-Johan fell ill with what is believed to be schizophrenia when he was in his early 20s. He became a famous artistafter his death in 1944. In the late 1940s, art historians, art critics, and cultural institutions began to promote Lim-Johan as a naïve painter. Lim-Johan's artistry was regarded as genuine in several ways. Aspects that shaped the reception include the artist's origin as well as perceptions about the misunderstood and marginalized artist. The reception is largely based on intention criticism, and the legend of the artist as well as the myth of the discovery have often been emphasized. The myth surrounding Lim-Johan has played an important role in the recognition and canonization of the artist. Stories about Lim-Johan's early life, illness, and originality have contributed to an increase in the artistic and cultural value of the art

An overview of heavy-tail extensions of multivariate Gaussian distribution and their relations

© 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. Many extensions of the multivariate normal distribution to heavy-tailed distributions are proposed in the literature, which includes scale Gaussian mixture distribution, elliptical distribution, generalized elliptical distribution and transelliptical distribution. The inferences for each family of distributions are well studied. However, extensions are overlapped or similar to each other, and it is hard to differentiate one extension from the other. For this reason, in practice, researchers simply pick one of many extensions and apply it to the analysis. In this paper, to enlighten practitioners who should conduct statistical procedures not based on their preferences but based on how data look like, we comparatively review various extensions and their estimators. Also, we fully investigate the inclusion and exclusion relations of different extensions by Venn diagrams and examples. Moreover, in the numerical study, we illustrate visual differences of the extensions by bivariate plots and analyze different scatter matrix estimators based on the microarray data.N

On continuity correction for RSS-structured cluster randomized designs with binary outcomes

© 2021, Sapienza Università di Roma.Correction for continuity is commonly used to improve the inference for binary data when the event of interest is rare or the sample size is small. A standard approach to reduce the bias in logit estimation is to add a small constant to both event and nonevent counts. The 0.5 adjustment is known as a correction rendering the estimation unbiased up to the order of K- 1, where K is the size of a simple random sample. However, for general designs beyond simple random sampling, the bias in estimating the logit is no longer zero in order K- 1. In this paper, we derive the formula of the correction factor that makes the first-order term of the bias vanish for general designs. We then apply it to estimate the logit when data are from ranked set sampling (RSS) embedded in a cluster randomized design (CRD). An RSS-structured CRD (RSS-CRD), introduced by Wang et al. (J Am Stat Assoc 111: 1576–1590, 2016), is a new two-stage design for more efficient estimation of treatment effect. We propose two methods to estimate the correction factors derived for RSS-CRDs. We numerically compare the proposed methods to those with the default factor 0.5 in terms of bias and mean squared error for estimating the treatment effect, and finally make recommendations to practitioners.N

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
