Intrinsic origin of interfacial second-order magnetic anisotropy in ferromagnet/normal metal heterostructures

    No full text
Interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, which is characterized by first-order (K-1) and second-order (K-2) anisotropy, is the core phenomenon for nonvolatile magnetic devices. A sizable K-2 satisfying a specific condition stabilizes the easy-cone state, where equilibrium magnetization forms at an angle from the film normal. The easy-cone state offers intriguing possibilities for advanced spintronic devices and unique spin textures, such as spin superfluids and easy-cone domain walls. Experimental realization of the easy-cone state requires understanding the origin of K-2, thereby enhancing K-2. However, the previously proposed origins of K-2 cannot fully account for the experimental results. Here, we experimentally show that K-2 scales almost linearly with the work function difference between the Co and X layers in Pt/Co/X heterostructures (X = Pd, Cu, Pt, Mo, Ru, W, and Ta), suggesting the central role of the inversion asymmetry in K-2. Our result provides a guideline for enhancing K-2 and realizing magnetic applications based on the easy-cone state. Spintronics: Putting a twist on information flow The performance of multilayered thin films that use magnetic spins to transmit data faster than traditional electronics can be improved using new design guidelines. Materials that direct magnetic spins to point straight up from a surface so they can be electrically manipulated have gained attention for high-density memory storage. Sang Ho Lim and Kyung-Jin Lee from Korea University in Seoul and co-workers now report a technique for fabricating upward-pointing magnetic spins that also gyrate in cone-like movements. Gyrating spins can lower the energy needed for memory operations, but the materials needed to generate such magnetic states have been difficult to identify. The authors coated platinum-cobalt layers with different metal or oxide films and found that the strength of the gyrating spin state could be predicted based on textbook values of electric fields found within the thin-film layers.

Critical switching current density induced by spin Hall effect in magnetic structures with first- and second-order perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

Abstract In this study, we derive analytical expressions for the critical switching current density induced by spin Hall effect in magnetic structures with the first- and second-order perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We confirm the validity of the expressions by comparing the analytical results with those obtained from a macrospin simulation. Moreover, we find that for a particular thermal stability parameter, the switching current density can be minimized for a slightly positive second-order perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and the minimum switching current density can further be tuned using an external magnetic field. The analytical expressions are of considerable value in designing high-density magnetic random access memory and cryogenic memory

Improving Skeleton-based One-shot Action Recognition via Cross-modal Knowledge Distillation Using Textual Information

Constructing large-scale datasets for numerical reasoning over tabular and textual data in the financial domain is particularly challenging. Moreover, even the commonly used augmentation techniques for dataset construction prove to be ineffective in augmenting financial dataset. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a context augmentation methodology for enhancing the financial dataset, which generates new contexts for the original question. To do this, we leverage the hallucination capability of large-scale generative language models. Specifically, by providing instructions with constraints for context generation with the original dataset’s questions and arithmetic programs together as input to the language model’s prompt, we create plausible contexts that provide evidence for the given questions. The experimental results showed that the reasoning performance improved when we augmented the FinQA dataset using our methodology and trained the model with it

The 1961 Kampong Bukit Ho Swee fire and the making of modern Singapore

By 1970, Singapore’s urban landscape was dominated by high-rise blocks of planned public housing built by the People’s Action Party government, signifying the establishment of a high modernist nation-state. A decade earlier, the margins of the City had been dominated by kampongs, home to semi-autonomous communities of low-income Chinese families which freely built, and rebuilt, unauthorised wooden houses. This change was not merely one of housing but belied a more fundamental realignment of state-society relations in the 1960s. Relocated in Housing and Development Board flats, urban kampong families were progressively integrated into the social fabric of the emergent nation-state. This study examines the pivotal role of an event, the great Kampong Bukit Ho Swee fire of 1961, in bringing about this transformation. The redevelopment of the fire site in the aftermath of the calamity brought to completion the British colonial regime’s ‘emergency’ programmes of resettling urban kampong dwellers in planned accommodation, in particular, of building emergency public housing on the sites of major fires in the 1950s. The PAP’s far greater political resolve, and the timing of and state of emergency occasioned by the scale of the 1961 disaster, enabled the government to rehouse the Bukit Ho Swee fire victims in emergency housing in record time. This in turn provided the HDB with a strategic platform for clearing other kampongs and for transforming their residents into model citizens of the nation-state. The 1961 fire’s symbolic usefulness extended into the 1980s and beyond, in sanctioning the PAP’s new housing redevelopment schemes. The official account of the inferno has also become politically useful for the government of today for disciplining a new generation of Singaporeans against taking the nation’s progress for granted. Against these exalted claims of the fire’s role in the Singapore Story, this study also examines the degree of actual change and continuity in the social and economic lives of the people of Bukit Ho Swee after the inferno. In some crucial ways, the residents continued to occupy a marginal place in society while pondering, too, over the unresolved question of the cause of the fire. These continuities of everyday life reflect the ambivalence with which the citizenry regarded the high modernist state in contemporary Singapore

Medical examination data prediction with missing information imputation based on recurrent neural networks

    No full text
In this work, the recurrent neural networks (RNNs) for medical examination data prediction with missing information are proposed. Simple recurrent network (SRN), long short-term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) are selected among many variations of RNNs for the missing information imputation while they are also used to predict the future medical examination data. Besides, the missing information imputation based on bidirectional LSTM is also proposed to consider past information as well as the future information in the imputation process, while the traditional RNNs can only consider the past information during the imputation. We implemented medical examination results prediction experiment using the examination database of Koreans. The experimental results showed that the proposed RNNs worked better than the baseline linear regression method. Besides, the bidirectional LSTM performed best for missing information imputation.
