High speed JPEG coder based on modularized and pipelined architecture with distributed control

    No full text
The design of an efficient reusable IP based Extended JPEG encoder is presented in this paper. This encoder uses user-defined quantization and Huffman tables that can be reconfigured at run-time. It has a modularized and pipelined architecture with distributed control for each block. A simple interface makes integration of the modules in various systems simple and straightforward. The design when targeted on FPGA operated at speed of up to 90MHz and when mapped on 0.251 mu m CMOS process the design can operate at speeds over 450MHz, which is faster than any of the similar JPEG encoder designs reported

The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law

    No full text
Abstract The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Possible solutions for reform are suggested. In a forthcoming article, the author comprehensively examines those reform proposals

INVESTIGATION ON SUB-BAND GAP OPERATION MECHANISM OF INP QUANTUM DOT-BASED LIGHT-EMITTING DIODES

    No full text
Colloidal quantum dot-based light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) are being to the fore as next-generation technique for future information displays. Though the research for QLEDs have made much progress from perspective of efficiency and stability, the origin of sub-band gap (sub-Eg) turn-on voltage is still controversal. In this study, we investigate the modification of sub-Eg turn-on phenomena of QLEDs. The turn-on voltage of QLEDs are increased as decreaing the hole injection barrier. The turn-on voltage of diode current and consequent light generation demonstrate a clear dependence on the energy difference between conduction band minimum of ZnO and HOMO of HTMs. Emergence of weak emission tail near 1Se-1Shh at sub-Eg implies an involvement of surface states of QDs in the charge injection event. We investigate decay dynamics of QDs, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrical impedenace spectroscopy to clarify the role of surface states on the sub-Eg operation of QLEDs

Data transformations in custom digital workflows: Property graphs as a data model for user-defined mappings

    No full text
This paper describes the use of property graphs for mapping data between AEC software tools, which are not linked by common data formats and/or other interoperability measures. The intention of introducing this in practice, education and research is to facilitate the use of diverse, non-integrated design and analysis applications by a variety of users who need to create customised digital workflows, including those who are not expert programmers. Data model types are examined by way of supporting the choice of directed, attributed, multi-relational graphs for such data transformation tasks. A brief exemplar design scenario is also presented to illustrate the concepts and methods proposed, and conclusions are drawn regarding the feasibility of this approach and directions for further research.Architectural Engineering +TechnologyArchitecture and The Built Environmen

Prozessuale Fragen.National law finds itself more and more influenced by EC law. Within this context those EC legal acts who have no direct legal validity in the member states, unlike EC regulations, and which have to be transposed in national law by them, produce diverse problems. These problems are treated by the author from the point of view of a lawyer in such a way, that those who have to deal with these questions of transposition in their practice, find valuable indications for tangible solutions of transposition problems. The proposed solutions are supplemented and therefore more transparent since the author applies these solutions in the second part of his treatise to a concrete statement of problems, i.e. to what extent the EC legal acts concerning meat inspection fees have been transposed, respectively, transposed in due from in the years 1988 until 2001. The paper has been tutored by Prof. Dr. D. C. Umbach of the University of Potsdam. From the content: Delimitation of the competence of transposition between the federal state and his federal states. Requirements concerning the presence of an act of transposition as well as transposition in due form. Legal consequences of any non-transposition. Procedural questions

Birth of germline chimeras by transfer of chicken embryonic germ (EG) cells into recipient embryos

    No full text
This study reports for the first time the production of chicken germline chimeras by transfer of embryonic germ (EG) cells into recipient embryos of different strain. EG cells were established by the subculture of gonadal tissue cells retrieved from stage 28 White Leghorn (WL) embryos with I/I gene. During primary culture (P0), gonadal primordial germ cells (gPGCs) in the stromal cells began to form colonies after 7 days in culture with significant (P<0.0001) increase in cell population. Colonized gPGCs were then subcultured with chicken embryonic fibroblast monolayer for EG cell preparation. Prepared EG cells or gPGCs at P0 were transferred to stage 17 Korean Ogol chicken (KOC) embryos with i/i gene. The recipient chickens were raised for 6 months to sexual maturity, then a testcross analysis by artificial insemination was conducted for evaluating germline chimerism. As results, transfer of EG cells and gPGCs yielded total 17 germline chimeras; 2 out of 15 (13.3%) and 15 of 176 sexually matured chickens (8.5%), respectively. The efficiency of germline transmission in the chimeras was 1.5–14.6% in EG cells, while 1.3–27.6% in gPGCs. In conclusion, chicken germline chimeras could be produced by the transfer of EG cells, as well as gPGCs, which might enormously contribute to establishing various innovative technologies in the field of avian transgenic research for bioreactor production
