Ordinary working men...transformed into giants on the rugby field': Individual and Collective Memory in Oral Histories of Rugby League.

    No full text
As a sport that partly owes its existence to the issue of ‘broken time’, the working life of professional players outside the game is a highly symbolic issue in rugby league. In England financial reality meant that until the 1990s most players at professional level had to combine their career with full time employment away from the sport, often in the communities they represented on the field. To many this helped create a strong communal bond between those who played and watched rugby league and this perception has become a key cultural narrative in the sport’s ‘collective’ memory. This article uses individual narratives from oral history interviews which relate to the working life of professional players outside rugby league to examine the contention advanced by the sociologist Maurice Halbwachs and others that recollections of personal experience are always shaped to fit within the accepted public discourse. A wide range of personal testimonies are considered in order to illustrate how far, as some oral historians have argued, individuals are able to reflect upon the significance of shared experiences in ways which offer alternative perspectives to dominant cultural scripts

I+E Illumination and Emanation; Light as Body Adornment and the Implications of Wearable Light

    No full text
I+E Illumination and Emanation; Light As Body Adornment and the Implications of Wearable Light is practice-based research that exploits advances in miniature light sources in order to establish new forms of aesthetic expression through wearable light. I+E investigates how wearable light interacts with the body and its environment; it explores how this interaction shapes the visual perception of the body and establishes a critical framework for the description and evaluation of wearable light. Practice working with light and body crosses disciplines from jewellery and fashion to fine art, performance and lens-based media. Wearable light, however, is a new field with few precedents and potential for future applications in sportswear, therapeutic rehabilitation and personal safety. A reflexive, and adaptive methodology characterized the research process in which practice was the main vehicle, informed by the selection of critical context and continuous external feedback. Due to the cross-disciplinary nature of wearable light collaborative projects with practitioners in art & design and technological experts were balanced with experimental solo projects. The research outcome is a body of work that investigates wearable light in a variety of applications such as light jewellery, performance and lens-based media. Original contributions to knowledge are: in developing an experimental, practice-based research methodology with a particular focus on the role of collaborations vis-à-vis solo projects, and the expansion of the role of the practitioner from designer-maker to ‘auteur’, the focus and conduit in the practice of a new and complex performance art based on wearable light; in developing a critical vocabulary for the description and evaluation of wearable light and in investigating the mechanics of placing light on the body and its effects on the perception of the body in its environment

Augmented Light: Advancing Window & Lighting Technology

Thesis (Master's)--University of Washington, 2022Light has an innate ability to impact the physiological state of human beings. Although, modern day architecture hasmade immense strides in lighting design, little has been done to leverage this unique characteristic of light. A growing body of research has successfully qualified these non-quantitative effects of light into a new conceptual framework called the Human Centric Lighting Model. This new model considers the impacts of interior lighting as threefold: Visual, Biological and Emotional. Working within this new framework, this thesis explores the possibility of creating richer interior experiences by leveraging current day lighting and sensor technology in hopes of enrichening the rudimentarydialogue between interior and exterior lighting. Additionally, it considers technology’s role in shaping future cities as virtually augmented spaces that intermix physical and virtual components to create a new kind of urban environment that is shaped as much by physical architecture as it is by informational and cultural; these cities exist as physical places with augmented digital overlays. It aims to assist architecture in resolving the growing tension between physical and virtual spaces by re-establishing the role of the window as a liminal point of transition between not only interior and exterior space but physical and virtual as well

    Rob and Bert in Tokyo

This essay is steeped in contradiction: it is as much an attempt at mourning, coping, and letting go as it is an exercise in remembrance, rediscovery, and reconnection. One of the many areas of international legal scholarship where Rob Cryer left his mark is his oeuvre on the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE). To pay tribute to, and get re-acquainted with, Rob-the-person, I re-read his 2010 article on the ‘dignified dissenter’ in Tokyo, Dutch Judge Bert Röling. In that article, Rob uses the memoranda and the opinion of Bert-the-judge to assess his conceptual and legal contributions to the IMTFE judgment. They also serve him as a vehicle to get a better grasp of the author behind the text and the values and dilemmas that shaped Röling’s positions on the IMTFE bench. What more can we learn and understand about Rob Cryer while ‘reading Rob reading Bert’? What aspects of Röling’s legacy did he choose to foreground, and what qualities did he appreciate most? How did Rob treat his character when shedding light on the more contentious elements of Röling’s work? Even if this essay fails in its therapeutic purpose, it might still add a few mosaic pieces to the collective construction of Rob’s portrait in this volume

    Measurement Light Bulb: Control

    No full text
This document describes the design process the prototype of a measurement light bulb which is able to project spherical harmonics of orders 0-1-2. Photographs of these projections can be combined to represent many light distributions. The measurement light bulb can be used in the field of research focused on the computation of the illumination impact of lighting, more specifically, simulating different light sources. Our prototype consists of a laser beam rotating over two axes, which allows the device to project onto a sphere around itself. The device can be controlled wirelessly using Bluetooth. The lamp can project spherical harmonics in a resolution of 4 degree and 256 monochrome light levels. The time one projection takes is about one second, which allows for quick measurements. The dimensions and the weight of the lamp are such that it is portable. At this stage, the prototype can only operate in a dark environment, due to the use of a low powered laser. In this document, the focus will be on the design of control, communication and the PCB.Bachelor Graduation ProjectBachelor graduation project Electrical EngineeringElectrical Engineerin
