No full textLetter written by Isaac Peirce, a settler in Belpre, Ohio, to W. Jeffery Matthewson. The letter discusses Peirce's efforts to find good tenants for Matthewson's land. It discusses attacks on the settlement by American Indians, troop strength, and general living conditions in the area. The city of Belpre was the second permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory. Established along the Ohio River in 1789 by members of the Ohio Company, the location was surveyed the previous year as Belle-Prairie, French for "beautiful meadow.

The recovered life of Isaac Anderson
No full text"Owned by his father, Isaac Harold Anderson (1835-1906) was born enslaved but went on to become a wealthy businessman, grocer, politician, publisher, and religious leader in the African American community in the state of Georgia. Elected to the state senate, Anderson replaced his white father there, and later shepherded his people as a founding member and leader of the Colored Methodist Episcopal church. He helped support the establishment of Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee, and helped freed people leave Georgia for safe havens in northern Mississippi and Arkansas. Eventually under threat to his life, Anderson fled to Arkansas, and then later still, to Holly Springs, Mississippi. Much of Anderson's unique story has been lost to history-until now. In The Recovered Life of Isaac Anderson, author Alicia K. Jackson presents a biography of Anderson and in it a microhistory of Black religious life and politics after emancipation. A work of recovery, the volume captures the life of a shepherd to his journeying people, and of a college pioneer, a CME minister, a politician, and a freed person"-

Nonstandard Methods in Lie Theory
No full text119 p.Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2009.In this thesis, we apply model theory to Lie theory and geometric group theory. These applications of model theory come via nonstandard analysis. In Lie theory, we use nonstandard methods to prove two results. First, we give a positive solution to the local form of Hilbert's Fifth Problem, which asks whether every locally euclidean local topological group is locally isomorphic to a Lie group. In connection with the local form of Hilbert's Fifth Problem, we study local groups with a local automorphism whose iterates pointwise approach the trivial endomorphism. Secondly, we prove a generalization of a theorem of Pestov regarding Banach-Lie algebras. Call a Banach-Lie algebra enlargeable if it is the Lie algebra of a Banach-Lie group. Pestov used nonstandard methods to prove that a Banach-Lie algebra is enlargeable if it possesses a directed family of "uniformly enlargeable" subalgebras whose union is dense. We prove an analogue of this result for a wider class of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras, namely the locally exponential Lie algebras. Quasi-Lie algebras and a method for determining non-degeneracy of the quasi-Lie product
No full textThe axioms of a quasi-lie algebra are stated, followed by the definition of a nondegenerate quasi-lie algebra which is given in the framework of HopF algebra theory. Some quantum Lie algebras are shown to be examples of non-degenerate quasi-lie algebras and a method of testing for this non-degeneracy is outlined. It is shown that non-degeneracy implies uniqueness of the symmetriser. For quantum Lie algebras this is surprising since classically several symmetrisers are known to exist
