    Trialogues pour Georges Balandier

    No full text
This text attests to the dynamics of academic and personal exchanges, in the 1960s, between a Japanese Africanist, the author, and Georges Balandier, as well as other francophone anthropologists. An original portrait of Balandier emerges of the period during which he was developing Dynamist Anthropology and the idea that “personal history cannot be dissociated from that of Others” (Balandier 1977)

A letter from Masao and Ayame Okine to their parents, Seiichi and Tomeyo Okine. Masao reports to his parents about his arrival to Chicago after his discharge from the U.S. Army, serving as a Nisei solder in Japan. He describes his life in Chicago, such as buying a car and driving to New York to see Ayame's sister and brother-in-law, Ayako Lily and Junzo Ideno. He is planing to leave Chicago during the month and drive back to California, visiting Ayame Okine's parents, the Tanimotos, in Lodi, California, on the way home. The letter is signed by Masao and Ayame Okine. The arrival date of the letter, October 31, 1946, is recorded on the backside of the envelope. The Okine Collection contains materials collected by Seiichi and Tomeyo Okine who were Issei flower growers in Whittier, California. It includes correspondence, photographs, financial documents, and a photo album. A large portion of the collection consists of family correspondence with Seiichi and Tomeyo Okine, including letters from their Nisei children, Masao and Makoto Okine, both soldiers overseas during World War II, to their Issei parents incarcerated in the Rohwer incarceration camp in McGehee, Arkansas. The correspondence also includes letters from their relatives and friends who are former incarcerees in the camps during the war and have “resettled” in Chicago, Illinois as well as letters from the Okines’ family members in Hiroshima, Japan during the Allied occupation of Japan. In addition, the collection includes a family photo album compiled by Dorothy Ai Aoki, a Nisei daughter to the Okines

One problem which has always been the concern of ail governments and of ail those in power is the way in which orders and information are transmitted. The problem is more acute when the State covers a vast territory. The author of the article shows how the ruling class of the Moose in Upper Volta have used drum beats to transmit orders and circulate the dominant ideology. Kawada Junzo. Although there are many reports by various investigators concerning to the urinary steroids of schizophrenics, the general agreement is not established yet for the normal value. Prior to the study on urinary steroids of schizophrenics, the author determined the normal values for urinary steroids and also investigated the fluctuation and correlation of free and conjugated forms of urinary 17-hydroxycorticosteroid. The urine specimens were colloected from 18 male and 18 female persons (ranging 18-47 year old of age, the avarage age 26 year old). Measurement was performed on total neutral 17-ketosteroid, total 17-hydroxycorticosteroid and free and conjugated forms of the later. 17-ketosteroid was measured by the modified Koch & Holtorff's method and 17-hydroxycorticosteroid was carried out by Silber-Porter's method. The results obtained were as follows. (Every value shows mean and standard error.) 1) Daily excretion of total 17-ketosteroid was 8.3±0.6 mg/day for male and 5.8±0.4 mg/day for female. The difference between both sexes is thought to be significant from the statistical viewpoint. 2) Daily excretion of 17-hydroxycorticosteroid of male were 6.6±0.4 mg/day as total amount, 1.0±0.1 mg/day as free form and 5.7±0.3 mg/day as conjugated form; that of female were 6.2±0.9 mg/day, as total, 0.8±0.2 mg/day as free form, and 5.4±0.7 mg/day as conjugated form. These obtained values are higher than that of other workers in this country. The difference between sexes is seemed to be insignificant. There was no case on both sexes which had lower ratio than 3.0 in conjugated form/free form and also than 75% in conjugated form/total amount

Endocrinological Studies of Schizophrenia On the Urinary 17-ketosteroid and 17-hydroxycorticosteroid Ⅱ In the case of Schizophrenics

Determining the normal value, the author measured the daily excretions of total urinary 17-ketosteroid (17-KS) and total, free and conjugated forms of urinary 17-hydroxycorticosteroid (17-OHCS) of schizophrenics. The measuring methods used were those which described in Part Ⅰ. The urine specimens were collected from 51 cases, including male and female (ranging 16-58 year old of age, the average age 29 year old), which consist of acute, chronic and lobotomized schizophrenic groups. The following results were obtained. 1) Acute Schizophrenic group: Total urinary 17-KS was 5.8±0.5 mg/day for male and 4.4±0.5 mg/day for female; lower than normal value also that of chronic or lobotomized group. Total urinary 17-OHCS was 9.0±0.9 mg/day for male and 7.9±2.2 mg/day for female. This means elevation in total 17OHCS than normal value, chronic or lobotomized group. Above all, free form 17-EOHCS was 2.9±0.6 mg/day for male and 2.0±0.5 mg/day for female, which showed 2-3 times higher amount than normal, but not much difference to chronic or lobotomized group. Conjugated 17-OHCS was 6.2±0.6 mg/day for male and 5.9±1.9 mg/day for female; almost equal to normal value and higher than chronic or lobotomized groups. 2) Chronic Schizophrenic group: Total urinary 17-KS was 7.3±0.6 mg/day for male and 5.5±1.3 mg/day for female; higher than acute group and lower than normal or lobotomized group. Total urinary 17-OHCS was 6.6±0.7 mg/day for male and 5.2±1.1 mg/day for female; the values were almost same as normal. Free form was 2.6±0.3 mg/day for male and 2.1±0.6 mg/day for female; 2 times or more higher than normal but not much difference to other groups of schizophrenics. Conjugated form was 3.9±0.5 mg/day for male and 3.0±0.7 mg/day for female; lower than normal and other groups of schizophrenics. 3) Lobotomized Schizophrenic group: Total urinary 17-KS was 8.7±1.5 mg/day; higher than normal and other groups of schizophrenics. Total urinary 17-OHCS was 6.8±1.3 mg/day; almost equal to normal. Free form was 3.0±0.6 mg/day; elevated than normal but not much increase than other groups. Conjugated form was 3.9±0.7 mg/day: decreased than normal. 4) From the results of this study, it can be hardly recognized the correlation between the fluctuations of 17-KS and 17-OHCS on the different groups of schizophrenics. From the viewpoint of fluctuation of 17-OHCS which is thought to reflect the adrenal function, the steroid pattern showed slight tendencies to hyper-function, hypo-function and normal function in acute, chronic and lchotmoized schizophrenics respectively. The characteristic change on urinary steroids of schizophrenics was the increased excretion of free form of 17-OHCS; this lowered the ratio of conjugated form/free form and the percentage of conjugated form/total. The author put the consideration on process of schizophrenics from the view point of homeostasis and the effect of biologically active 17-OHCS to mental phenomena

Histoire orale et imaginaire du passé. Le cas d'un discours « historique » africain

Oral History and the Imagination of the Past. So far oral history in non-literate societies has been utilized as complementary material for chronological "objective" history. But in fact an oral history like written history is discourse about the past. The author believes that oral history must be treated first of all as material to know how the people of the society in question conceive and express their past in relation to the present. In the recited Mosi (Bur- kina Faso) royal geneaology studied by the author, the past is represented through rich metaphors, especially those of animals plants and natural phenomena. Past kings are represented by metaphorical expressions composed of common nouns and verbs. It is the oral traditions related to particular king that give such phrases the function of proper noun to designate particular king. Here the traces of the past can be recognized only through metaphors. But the employment of the discourse itself, in which new events must have been absorbed in the course of history, reveals traces of the restructuring of the discourse.Kawada Junzo. Histoire orale et imaginaire du passé. Le cas d'un discours « historique » africain. In: Annales. Économies, Sociétés, Civilisations. 48ᵉ année, N. 4, 1993. pp. 1087-1105

    No full text
At present, mobile phones and laptop computers are essential items in our daily life. As a battery for such portable devices, the lithium ion secondary battery is used. The lithium ion secondary battery, which is used as a battery for such portable devices, was first invented by Dr. Yoshino at Asahi Kasei, where the present author formerly worked. In this paper, the author describes how the lithium ion secondary battery was developed by the inventor, how the technology originated in Japan and the effects of the management on the lithium ion secondary battery business. The author also describes the impact of the lithium ion secondary battery on the chemical industry, where new business is born, and also predicts the future use of the lithium ion secondary battery as a battery for hybrid cars.departmental bulletin pape

Technology from Japan and Its Management…Product Development and Business Strategy in Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

    No full text
Research using liquid crystal as a display was started in USA in the 1960s, and most of the basic principles were established in USA and Britain. However, commercialization and production technologies were led by Japanese companies. Various innovations were also developed in Japan, and Japanese companies lead the world. In this area, however in the 2000s, companies in Korea and Taiwan have made remarkable progress. Here in this report, the author discusses the past, present and future situation of liquid crystal display, and considers how the future liquid crystal display industries should be for Japanese companies.departmental bulletin pape

LORENTZIAN POLYNOMIALS, HIGHER HESSIANS, AND THE HODGE-RIEMANN PROPERTY FOR CODIMENSION TWO GRADED ARTINIAN GORENSTEIN ALGEBRAS

    No full text
We study the Hodge-Riemann property (HRP) for graded Artinian Gorenstein (AG) algebras. We classify AG algebras in codimension two that have HRP in terms of higher Hessian matrices and positivity of Schur functions associated to certain rectangular partitions. In this paper we introduce the Hodge Riemann property (HRP) on an arbitrary graded oriented Artinian Gorenstein (AG) algebra defined over R, and we give a criterion on the higher Hessian matrix of its Macaulay dual generator (Theorem 3.1). AG algebras can be regarded as algebraic analogues of cohomology rings (in even degrees) of complex manifolds, and the HRP is analogous to the Hodge-Riemann relations (HRR) satisfied by cohomology rings of complex Kähler manifolds. Higher Hessians were introduced by the fourth author [10] to study the strong Lefschetz property (SLP) of an AG algebra defined over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero (see also [4]); over the real numbers, HRP implies SLP (Lemma 2.3)
