LibreTexts
Learners and educators in search of free textbooks may find a solution in LibreTexts, a nonprofit project that describes itself as "a multi-institutional collaborative venture to develop the next generation of open-access texts to improve postsecondary education at all levels of higher learning." Visitors to LibreTexts will find "twelve independently operating and interconnected libraries that focus on augmenting post-secondary education in specific fields in STEM fields, social sciences, and humanities." Within these libraries, readers can find bookshelves of digital textbooks, campus courses of customized LibreTexts, homework exercises, and ancillary materials such as visualizations and simulations. As of this write-up, LibreTexts contains nearly 400 open-access textbooks and other course materials that are developed collaboratively between faculty, students, and outside experts and scholars. LibreTexts is directed by its founder Delmar Larsen, Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Davis, who was inspired by his own frustration with errors in the conventional textbooks that his students had been paying for. In October 2018, LibreTexts was awarded the US Department of Education's inaugural Open Textbook Pilot Grant, worth a total of $4.9 million, which the project is using to expand their educational content and incorporate additional advanced features such as interactive 3D animations and integration with online learning management systems
Principles of Macroeconomics
486 p.Recognizing that a course in economics may seem daunting to some students, we have tried to make the writing clear and engaging. Clarity comes in part from the intuitive presentation style, but we have also integrated a number of pedagogical features that we believe make learning economic concepts and principles easier and more fun. These features are very student-focused. The chapters themselves are written using a “modular” format. In particular, chapters generally consist of three main content sections that break down a particular topic into manageable parts. Each content section contains not only an exposition of the material at hand but also learning objectives, summaries, examples, and problems. Each chapter is introduced with a story to motivate the material and each chapter ends with a wrap-up and additional problems. Our goal is to encourage active learning by including many examples and many problems of different types

Delmar Larsen is Professor of Chemistry at the University of California Davis and the Founder and Director of the LibreTexts OER Project. Under Delmar’s leadership LibreTexts is being built by over 1000 active developers (students, instructors and outside experts) across multiple campuses and nations. In its 15th year LibreTexts will soon have over 1 billion page views. Larsen is the winner of the 2022 University of California Davis Chancellor's Innovation Award for building LibreTexts. In 2022, LibreTexts won the Open Ed Global prizes for an Open Repository and for Open Infrastructure.Today, online homework systems are the most commonly required curricula materials, ADAPT is a new online homework system being developed by LibreTexts to serve the Open Education community. With the support of the California Educational Learning Lab, ADAPT is designed to combine adaptive learning incorporating learning trees with culturally responsive pedagogy at minimal cost. We will demonstrate how instructors can use ADAPT to augment existing and newly constructed OER textbooks with summative exercises and embed them in LMSs, LibreTexts textbooks, in a standalone application, and in-class clickers. Discussions will demonstrate how the ADAPT homework system empowers faculty to build and use existing questions in multiple modalities. Participants will learn how to build autograded questions based on four technologies – H5P, WebWork, IMathAS, and native (QTI) – that can be used interchangeably to allow for maximal impact. Open ended questions can be evaluated using a sophisticated checker to rapidly mark text, audio or other files for grading. We will also introduce the LibreStudio platform for construction, storage and distribution of H5P assessments. Participants will be able to join LibreStudio to create and share H5P assessments, review the H5P of other authors, and build/join a community within Studio. The workshop will conclude with an overview of the analytics infrastructure to provide real-time learning analytics to instructors on student progress with pre-defined learning objectives.ADAPT is a new online homework system being developed by LibreTexts to serve the Open Education community. This workshop will showcase the ADAPT online homework system which incorporates LibreStudio for building H5P questions and sophisticated learning analytics. We will demonstrate how to use ADAPT to augment existing and newly constructed OER textbooks and embed them in LMSs, LibreTexts textbooks, as a standalone application for summative testing and to use with cell phones as in-class clickers

Libretexts unites students, faculty and scholars to cooperatively develop online educational resources that are easy to adopt and use, simple to optimize, and are backed by educational research with advanced technologies. LibreTexts are totally cost free to students, institutions and faculty. LibreTexts’ technology enables any faculty member to easily and rapidly create OER textbooks and more that are optimized for their courses and students. The structure of LibreTexts solves two of the central problems limiting OER adoption: the time and effort that faculty need to assemble OER for their classes and dissemination. Libretexts are built by incorporating content from an extensive network of existing materials which extend across the curriculum which faculty can edit and enhance to meet their needs. The new ReMixer allows for easy drag and drop OER construction. Other features incorporate annotation (hypothes.is and NotaBene) and computation (Jupyter) as well as 3D visualization and multimedia. LibreTexts supports import into LMSs, print on demand, and import from open eTextbooks. Since its inception ten years ago, LibreTexts has been exponentially growing and currently reaches over 60 million students per year with 400,000 web hits per day. In the past year over 18,000 distinct users from Oregon visited LibreTexts and it is used at the Oregon Institute of Technology for chemistry courses. Reimagining the Future of Chemistry Textbooks with LibreTexts
The LibreTexts is the latest evolution of the ChemWiki project that was started at UC Davis in 2008 to build and distribute open-access texts to improve postsecondary education at all institutions of higher learning. While the project currently covers all academic subjects with 13 independent operating libraries, the chemistry library (https://chem.libretexts.org/) is the most developed and is responsible for 75% of the 100 million pageviews the project delivers annually. Our primary effort focuses on creating and curating online Open Educational Resource (OER) libraries that make it easy for others to reuse, revise, remix and redistribute textbook content. LibreTexts’ technology enables any faculty member to easily and rapidly create OER textbooks and more, optimized for their courses and students. The structure of LibreTexts solves two of the central problems limiting OER adoption: the time and expertise that faculty need to assemble OER for their classes and dissemination to others. Libretexts are built by incorporating content from an extensive network of OER textbooks extending across higher education that faculty can edit and enhance to meet their needs. Barriers to OER use will be discussed with emphasis on how LibreTexts overcomes them. Features include annotation (hypothes.is), and computation (Jupyter, 3D visualization and multimedia). In development are online homework systems and direct import from EPUB formats. LibreTexts supports import into LMSs, and printing of chapters as PDFs on demand. Teams are focusing on data-driven assessment of student learning and performance to optimize LibreTexts as well as improving accessibility. LibreTexts are easy to adopt and use, simple to optimize, and backed by educational research with advanced technologies.

Join us for this informal webinar to learn a little more about this online platform designed for customizing and distributing open textbooks. From Gettysburg College, Scholarly Communications Librarian Mary Elmquist will provide an introduction to the platform, its structure and features, and Dr. Alice Brawley Newlin, Assistant Professor of Management, will speak on her ongoing experiences using LibreTexts to edit and implement an open textbook for a Statistical Methods course.
This session should provide insight for both instructors interested in LibreTexts for their own projects and for librarians and other staff on campus who work to support OER adoption. Please bring your questions, as there will be plenty of time for Q&A

Dr. Amanda C. Sargent, Assistant Professor of Management at Bentley University, reviews the OpenStax textbook “Organizational Behavior” as well as “Organizational Behavior” on Libretexts. While both open-source texts cover a wide range of organizational behavior topics, Sargent concluded that the information in OpenStax’s “Organizational Behavior” was outdated and difficult to read in some sections. At the same time, Sargent notes that while Libretexts’ “Organizational Behavior” had some outdated references, it was a more suitable textbook selection for an introduction to Organizational Behavior
