Inside these environments, the computational devices should be considered tools to access information and, therefore, they shouldn't be the focus of attention of the professional. Thus, they should be used naturally. For the system to behave in such a way, it is necessary that it adapts itself to the users contexts. One of the most indicated ways to represent these contexts is through ontologies, due to the great expressivity that they allow. However, environments such as proposed require an extremely dynamic system to represent the context in a coherent manner with the changes in this environment, because their professionals encounter a frequent changing of shifts and tasks in which they work with diferent patients and information from diferent sources. To this end, this dissertation proposes an architecture for a hospital pervasive that seeks to provide all the features mentioned above.

Tese de Doutoramento em InformaticsA good Learning Space (LS) should convey pertinent information to the visitors at the most adequate time and location to favor their knowledge acquisition. This statement justifies the relevance of virtual Learning Spaces. Considering the consolidation of the Internet and the improvement of the interaction, searching, and learning mechanisms, this work proposes a generic architecture, called CaVa, to create Virtual Learning Spaces building upon cultural institution documents. More precisely, the proposal is to automatically generate ontology-based virtual learning environments from document repositories. Thus, to impart relevant learning materials to the virtual LS, this proposal is based on using ontologies to represent the fundamental concepts and semantic relations in a user- and machine-understandable format. These concepts together with the data (extracted from the real documents) stored in a digital repository are displayed in a web-based LS that enables the visitors to use the available features and tools to learn about a specific domain. According to the approach here discussed, each desired virtual LS must be specified rigorously through a Domain-Specific Language (DSL), called CaVaDSL, designed and implemented in this work. Furthermore, a set of processors (generators) was developed. These generators have the duty, receiving a CaVaDSL specification as input, of transforming it into several web scripts to be recognized and rendered by a web browser, producing the final virtual LS. Aiming at validating the proposed architecture, three real case studies – (1) Emigration Documents belonging to Fafe’s Archive; (2) The prosopographical repository of the Fasti Ecclesiae Portugaliae project; and (3) Collection of life stories of the Museum of the Person – were used. These real scenarios are actually relevant as they promote the digital preservation and dissemination of Cultural Heritage, contributing to human welfare.

According to Topic Map Data Model (Garshol and Moore, 2005), Topic Maps are abstract structures that can encode knowledge and connect this encoded knowledge to relevant information resources. Topic Maps allow a domain knowledge representation in semantic networks, composed of topics and associations. Nowadays, almost all topic maps are built by hand. This kind of edition is time consuming and has important financial costs. There are several tools for topic map edition but they have some limitations like the lack of a topic map semantic validator. In order to cope with a broad range of scenarios, a topic is a very wide concept. On one hand, this makes Topic Maps a convenient model for knowledge representation; but on the other hand, this can also put in risk the topic map consistency. A set of semantic constraints must be imposed to the topic map in order to grant its consistency. The Topic Maps standard does not provide language constructors to specify the semantics. So it is not possible to derive from the standard mechanisms to validate a topic maps against the contextual rules. Therefore it is necessary to improve the ISO 13250 standard adding a support for constraints definition enabling the creation of a processor for topic map automatic validation. The main contribute of this thesis is a constraint language for topic maps called XTche and its processor. XTche language is TMCL-based (Topic Map Constraint Language) (Nishikawa, Moore, and Bogachev, 2004). This language allows to complement the description of the semantic network structure (composed of topic and associations) with schema, contextual, and existence constraints, thus defining the semantics of topic maps that should be preserved. Metamorphosis – an environment that can extract data from information resources and build a topic map according to a specification, validate it, and generate a conceptual navigation over the topic map knowledge – is another contribution of this thesis. Metamorphosis – a Topic Maps oriented environment – generates conceptual navigators for heterogenous information resources providing the desired interoperability. Metamorphosis’ architecture is composed of: (1) Oveia, a processor that builds topic maps. Its core is a processor that extracts the topics instances from the information resources and builds a topic map. It reads and processes the XSDS and XS4TM specifications. The topic map generated by Oveia is stored as an XTM file or alternatively as a relational database following the OntologyDB approach; (2) XTche processor, that consumes the previous XTM file and validates the topic map according to a set of constraints defined in XTche language; (3) Ulisses processor, that produces a whole semantic website based on a valid topic map; this website is a set of pages that displays all the information concerned with topics and associations and provides a conceptual navigation over the semantic network (the topic map)

Contradictions in Assessing Human Morals and the Ethical Design of Autonomous Vehicles

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) promise to bring many benefits to society, such as safety, an increase of accessibility and life quality, among others. Unlike humans, they do not get tired and, supposedly, do not fail. However, there might be cases where, due to limit visibility, occlusions or even a sensor failure, the system might not be capable to detect one or more obstacles along the vehicle's path early enough to avoid a crash. Although these situations might be rare if one considers a single vehicle, if predictions are correct, these AVs are to be adopted in large quantities in the near future, making even rare situations more commonplace. AVs will have to deal with these forced-choice situations in the best possible way. This paper presents a review of the ethical discussion regarding the matter of AVs and an analysis of a questionnaire implemented by the authors. Our results show evidence for several types of contradictory choices made by the subjects, which suggest the moral choices do not necessarily follow strict logical reasoning.Peer reviewe
