A Decomposition of the Personal Income Tax Changes in Italy: 1995-2000
The effects of personal income tax changes are usually analyzed by comparing the inequality of income distributions before and after the tax policy change on a fixed pretax income distribution. This constant-population methodology aims at isolating the "pure" redistributive effect of the tax legislation. On the basis of the OECD's 1987 analysis, this paper proposes a methodology to disentangle the pure effect of tax changes from the influence of other nontax factors when the pretax income distribution is not fixed. For the Italian case, it is shown that the additional redistributive outcome displayed by changes of tax laws between 1995 and 2000 is only one-fourth of the total change of the redistributive impact in the same period and is outweighed by the effect of inflationary fiscal drag
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dynamic profiling of banking customers: a pseudo–panel study
I vantaggi della tecnica vengono illustrati in un caso di studio relativo ad una banca italianaThe analysis of the evolution of satisfaction in business context is usually based on pseudo panels studies, because they are less costly and easy to build with the available data. As in the cross-section case, detailed information about customers are collected at each time point, but the dynamic comparison generally involves few temporal lags (due to short life time of products and services). Accordingly, in our paper we apply the Dual Multiple Factor Analysis. Such a technique allows the synthesis of the multivariate tables and their visualization on a common space that sheds light on customers’ trajectories of satisfaction. Cervical Post-traumatic Unilateral Locked Facets: Clinical, Radiological and Surgical Remarks on a Series of 33 Patients.
Study Design: Radiographic and clinical analysis.
Objective: Review author's experience with anterior discectomy, interbody fusion and anterior cervical plating in 33 patients with post-traumatic unilateral cervical locked facets.
Summary of Background Data: Unilateral cervical locked facet syndrome is a relatively uncommon injury that often is misdiagnosed and therefore subject to a dangerous delay in surgery. Management of this trauma is controversial.
Methods: 33 patients with radiologically proven diagnosis of postraumatic unilateral cervical locked facets were treated by skull traction and surgical operation from January 2005 to December 2009. All patients preoperatively were assessed for neurological examination and underwent XRays, MRI and CT evaluation of the cervical spine.
Results: The unilateral locked facet level was C4-C5 in 13 patients, C5-C6 in ten, C6-C7 in eight and C3-C4 in two patients. After closed reduction attempt with Crutchfield system, the correct alignment was achieved in 30 patients, who underwent anterior discectomy with cage, interbody fusion and anterior cervical plating. In 3 patients there was an overdistraction and therefore a closed reduction was not possible, so they were firstly operated by posterior approach with opened reduction of the facets, lateral mass screws and posterolateral fusion. In two of these patients there was an anterior fragment of the disc in the canal, so was also performed an anterior approach with discectomy, cage and plating. There were no surgery-related complications. Post-operative neurological status was unchanged in the three patients with tetraplegia and improved in eight of the ten patients with radiculopathy. Fusion was obtained in all patients, as showed in the clinical and radiological follow-up.
Conclusion: The authors conclude that an anterior approach provides a safe and effective alternative for the treatment of patients with post-traumatic unilateral cervical locked facet, when preoperatively the cervical alignment of the dislocation is achieved with a closed reduction
Millennials e religione: divergenza o continuità rispetto alla generazione dei genitori?
Millennials and Religion: Divergence or Continuity Compared to the Generation of their Parents? ·This paper deals with the relationship between Millennials and religion with the aim at determining whether this generation diverges from that of their mothers and fathers also from the point of view of religious identity and experience. The paper is divided into two parts: a literature review on the theme of generational differences in religious identity and experience with reference to the Italian context and a second part dedicated to data analysis. We analyze approximately 3,700 questionnaires on this issue completed by students attending the University of Milano-Bicocca
Industrial Production Index and the Web: an explorative cointegration analysis
In this paper we explore the relationship between the Industrial Production Index (IPI), the confidence index for the manufacturing sector and its sub-indexes and Google searches for several words linked to the economic situation, for the period January 2004 - September 2016 on Italian data. Significant correlations between the selected indicators point to probable comovements of same. Adding one observation at a time since the first forewarning signs of the 2008 crisis, we find that a few Google searches and the IPI cointegrate, particularly during the strong downward trend leading to January 2009, while no confidence indicators cointegrate with the IPI. These findings suggest that concern about economic conditions expressed through searches in google and the IPI or the confidence indexes are influenced by common circumstances. Recursive forecasts of the IPI through VECM models suggest that the evolution of the IPI can be well mimicked using the real time Gtrends selected variables
