    Double strap joint tests to determine the bond characteristics between CFRP and steel plates

    Advanced composite materials offer remarkable potential in the upgrade of civil engineering structures. The evolution of CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced polymer) technologies and their versatility for applications in civil constructions require comprehensive and reliable codes of practice. Guidelines are available on the rehabilitation and retrofit of concrete structures with advanced composite materials. However, there is a need to develop appropriate design guidelines for CFRP strengthened steel structures. It is important to understand the bond characteristics between CFRP and steel plates. This paper describes a series of double strap shear tests loaded in tension to investigate the bond between CFRP sheets and steel plates. Both normal modulus (240 GPa) and high modulus (640 GPa) CFRPs were used in the test program. Strain gauges were mounted to capture the strain distribution along the CFRP length. Different failure modes were observed for joints with normal modulus CFRP and those with high modulus CFRP. The strain distribution along the CFRP length is similar for the two cases. A shorter effective bond length was obtained for joints with high modulus CFRP whereas larger ultimate load carrying capacity can be achieved for joints with normal modulus CFRP when the bond length is long enough

    Comparative analysis of MIR168 promoters in three plant species

    MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in the regulation of gene expression by post-transcriptionally targeting mRNAs for cleavage or translational repression. miR168 is a key miRNA because it regulates the expression of the slicer protein ARGONAUTE1 (AGO1), which catalyzes mRNA cleavage. Interestingly, plant miR168s are highly evolutionarily conserved; however, it is unclear whether MIR168 promoter elements and expression patterns are also conserved. Here, we isolated MIR168 promoters from monocot rice and dicot grape genomes. To determine the expression pattern, different promoters were fused to a beta-glucoronidase reporter gene and the resulting constructs were then transformed in Arabidopsis. The results revealed clear differences in the MIR168 promoter sequence of monocot and dicot plant species. Moreover, the pattern of MIR168 promoter expression differed between monocots and dicots. These results suggest that, unlike that of miR168, the MIR168 promoter is not conserved in monocots and dicot

    Paraborboropactus canalis sp. nov. Figs 31–32 Type material. Holotype: ♀, CHINA: Yunnan: Xishuangbanna, Mengla County, Menglun Town, Menglun Nature Reserve, Lvshilin Forest Park (N21º54.705', E101º16.898', 664 m), 15 November 2009, G. Tang and Z.Y. Yao (Tang-Yao_No.8). Etymology. The specific epithet is taken from the Latin word canalis (furrow or groove), referring to the epigynum with a pair of long grooved copulatory openings, noun in apposition. Diagnosis. This new species can be easily distinguished from P. rhombus (see Tang & Li 2009c: 712–721) and P. oblatus (see Tang & Li 2010: 53–54) by the wide anteriorly situated hood and the shape of septum. Description. Female (holotype measured): Total length 8.20. Prosoma 3.40 long, 3.30 wide; Opisthosoma 5.30 long, 4.90 wide. Dorsal shield of prosoma brown with black brown longitudinal stripes. AER procurved, tubercles of ALE with clustered hairs. Eye measurements: AME 0.10; ALE 0.24; PME 0.14; PLE 0.21; AME– AME 0.15; AME–ALE 0.24; PME–PME 0.46; PME–PLE 0.42. MOA length 0.73 with front width 0.48 and back width 0.74. Chelicera, gnathocoxa, labium and sternum blackish brown. Chelicerae with 3 pro- and 3 retromarginal teeth. Femur I, II with thick spines and clustered hairs; tibiae I, II with white brush-shaped clustered hairs. Tibiae and metatarsi of I, II with 4, 3 pairs of ventral spines, respectively. Leg measurements: I: 12.40 (4.00, 5.30, 2.30, 0.80); II: 13.60 (4.30, 5.50, 2.50, 1.30); III: 7.00 (2.30, 2.70, 1.20, 0.80); IV: 8.00 (2.60, 3.00, 1.50, 0.90), leg formula: 2143. Opisthosoma dorsally yellowish brown with small brown clustered hairs; venter light brown. Epigynum (Figs 31 C–D, 32 A–B). Epigynum with a wide, anteriorly situated hood and a pair of posteriorly situated epigynal teeth; copulatory openings long groove like; copulatory ducts short, wide; spermathecae wrinkled.     Draconarius baibaensis Z. Zhao & S. Li, sp. n. Figs 1, 8 Type material. Holotype ♀ (IZCAS-Ar39616): Baiba Township (N29.79867º, E93.84720º, 3191 m), Bayi County, Nyingchi City, Tibet, China, 31. VII. 2012, Z.Y. Yao and Z. Zhao leg. Etymology. The specific name refers to the type locality, Baiba Township; adjective. Diagnosis. Draconarius baibaensis sp. n. is most similar to D. altissimus (Hu, 2001). The epigyne of both species have a small atrium located posteriorly, and the epigynal teeth are pointed at the end, with spermathecal heads long and thin. However, the two species differ by the location of the epigynal teeth (medially in D. baibaensis sp. n. in Fig. 1A and posteriorly in D. altissimus in fig. 43.1 in Hu 2001 and fig. 112A in Zhu et al. 2017) and the shape of the posterior margin of the atrium (rectangular in D. baibaensis sp. n. in Fig. 1A and trapezoidal in D. altissimus in fig. 43.1 in Hu 2001 and fig. 112A in Zhu et al. 2017). Description. Female (IZCAS-Ar39616). Cephalothorax brown. The clypeus, endites, labium darker than carapace but colour of sternum and legs the same as carapace. Abdomen light-brown, covered by gray hairs. The colour of spinnerets same as carapace. Total length 11.29. Carapace 5.20 long, 3.61 wide. Abdomen 6.09 long, 3.96 wide. Eye sizes and interdistances: AME 0.12, ALE 0.21, PME 0.15, PLE 0.18; AME–AME 0.12, AME–ALE 0.11, AME–PME 0.13, ALE–PLE 0, PME–PME 0.14, PME–PLE 0.04. Leg measurements: I 15.39 (4.84, 4.99, 3.36, 2.20); II 13.86 (4.18, 4.49, 3.21, 1.98); III 12.78 (3.91, 3.80, 3.16, 1.91); IV 16.74 (4.97, 5.04, 4.49, 2.24). Epigyne: subequal to 2 times wider than long with 2 triangular teeth, pointed at end, medially situated and widely separated, hoods distinct, atrium small and located posteriorly, posterior margin of atrium 4 times wider than long; spermathecae 1.5 times longer than wide, anteriorly wider than posteriorly, spermathecal heads long and thin, originating medially from the spermathecae; the width of fertilization ducts subequal to its length (Fig. 1 A–B).
