    Rotationally resolved infrared spectrum of the Li+-D-2 cation complex

    The infrared spectrum of mass selected Li+-D-2 cations is recorded in the D-D stretch region (2860-2950 cm(-1)) in a tandem mass spectrometer by monitoring Li+ photofragments. The D-D stretch vibration of Li+-D-2 is shifted by -79 cm(-1) from that of the free D-2 molecule indicating that the vibrational excitation of the D-2 subunit strengthens the effective Li+center dot D-2 intermolecular interaction. Around 100 rovibrational transitions, belonging to parallel K-a=0-0, 1-1, and 2-2 subbands, are fitted to a Watson A-reduced Hamiltonian to yield effective molecular parameters. The infrared spectrum shows that the complex consists of a Li+ ion attached to a slightly perturbed D-2 molecule with a T-shaped equilibrium configuration and a 2.035 A vibrationally averaged intermolecular separation. Comparisons are made between the spectroscopic data and data obtained from rovibrational calculations using a recent three dimensional Li+-D-2 potential energy surface [R. Martinazzo, G.     Cohomology of D-complex manifolds

    In order to look for a well-behaved counterpart to Dolbeault cohomology in D-complex geometry, we study the de Rham cohomology of an almost D-complex manifold and its subgroups made up of the classes admitting invariant, respectively anti-invariant, representatives with respect to the almost D-complex structure, miming the theory introduced by Li and Zhang (2009) in [20] for almost complex manifolds. In particular, we prove that, on a 4-dimensional D-complex nilmanifold, such subgroups provide a decomposition at the level of the real second de Rham cohomology group. Moreover, we study deformations of D-complex structures, showing in particular that admitting D-Kähler structures is not a stable property under small deformations

    A Critical Discourse Analysis of Li Yang’s Crazy English: Perspectives On English Education In China

    Li Yang is widely known throughout China and parts of Asia for his Crazy English program and nontraditional teaching methods. His goal is to help 300 million Chinese people speak English fluently. In addition to his mass teaching rallies he holds throughout China, he also has published an extensive amount of popular English language learning texts, audio guides and visual material. In this thesis, I examine Li Yang’s 2011 publication of his Standard American English Course. I analyze the text, first on a macro-level examining Li Yang’s conceptualization of American English, then on a micro-level examining word, style and image choices. The continuing spread of English throughout the world has had profound effects on both local and the global communities. The way in which local communities deal with this phenomenon is varied and often very complex. The analysis of Li Yang’s text offers some insight into the adaptation of English into Chinese society. Through the use of Critical Discourse Analysis and Pierre Bourdieu’s notion of capital, the socio-historical content of this phenomenon and how elements from the past relate to the current situation, as well as various power relationships seen between the global and local and within the local are examined. In this thesis, I find that in China, the power of language goes far beyond being a tool for communication. It has permeated Chinese society and facilitates to widen the gap between the haves and have-nots in society. In looking at Li Yang’s text, I also find that the uncovered power relationships also dovetail with powerful relationships of solidarity. In modern Chinese society, where so much is riding on one’s ability to master English, I argue that Li Yang’s Crazy English program operates as a form of Linguistic Welfare in which recipients are currently appeased and inequalities remain unaddressed

    MeSH term explosion and author rank improve expert recommendations

    Information overload is an often-cited phenomenon that reduces the productivity, efficiency and efficacy of scientists. One challenge for scientists is to find appropriate collaborators in their research. The literature describes various solutions to the problem of expertise location, but most current approaches do not appear to be very suitable for expert recommendations in biomedical research. In this study, we present the development and initial evaluation of a vector space model-based algorithm to calculate researcher similarity using four inputs: 1) MeSH terms of publications; 2) MeSH terms and author rank; 3) exploded MeSH terms; and 4) exploded MeSH terms and author rank. We developed and evaluated the algorithm using a data set of 17,525 authors and their 22,542 papers. On average, our algorithms correctly predicted 2.5 of the top 5/10 coauthors of individual scientists. Exploded MeSH and author rank outperformed all other algorithms in accuracy, followed closely by MeSH and author rank. Our results show that the accuracy of MeSH term-based matching can be enhanced with other metadata such as author rank

    Computational study of LiMn2O4 as cathode material in Li-ion battery

    Density functional theory (DFT) in spin polarized generalized gradient approximation with Hubbard U correction (GGA+U) was used to investigate the structural changes and voltages of LiMn2O4 cubic spinel during the electrochemical process in Li-ion battery. Jahn-Teller distortion and electrons transfer between Mn atoms and O atoms were observed by analysis the charge density. Effect of the reduction of Li content on distribution of Mn3+ and Mn4+ was also discussed. The low-index surface facets (100) and (111) extracted from the optimized bulk LiMn2O4 were calculated to study their structures and stability. Two possible terminations and some reconstructions of each surface were inspected. A specific reconstruction that would create a partial inverse spinel arrangement was applied on (111) surface and resulted in the most stable facet among the investigated facets. Furthermore, the negative charged vacancy formation energy indicated lithium extracted as a form of Li+ ions, rendered the electron left in the bulk to drift through external circuit

    Three novel isomorphous transition metal phosphonate compounds with formula [M(OOCC6H4PO3H)(H2O)] [M(II) = Mn(1), Co(2), Ni(3)] were prepared through hydrothermal reaction of 2-carboxyphenylphosphonic acid and metal salts. Within the structure, the {M2O2} dimers made up of edge-sharing{MO6} octahedra are connected by carboxylate and/orphosphonate groups, leading to a 2-D layer. The phenyl groups fill in the inter-layer spaces. Magnetic measurements reveal that dominant antiferromagnetic interactions are observed in compounds 1 and 2, while for compound 3, the dominant ferromagnetic interaction leads to a spontaneous ferromagnetic long range ordering below T-c = 4.0 K
