Geochronological constraints on mesoproterozoic and neoproterozoic(?) high-grade metasedimentary rocks of north-central Idaho, U.S.A.
We analyzed detrital zircons in seven samples of metasedimentary rock from north-central Idaho, U.S.A., to test the previous assignment of these rocks to the Mesoproterozoic Belt–Purcell Supergroup. Correlating these rocks with known sedimentary units through field observations is difficult if not impossible due to the high metamorphic grade (amphibolite facies) and intensity of deformation. Zircon analysis by laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) reveals that five of the seven samples contain multiple zircon populations between 1700 and 1400 Ma and a scatter of Paleoproterozoic and Archean ages, similar to results reported from the Belt Supergroup to the north and east. These results indicate that the likely protoliths of most high-grade metamorphic rocks northwest of the Idaho batholith were upper strata of the Belt Supergroup. In contrast, a quartzite at Bertha Hill north of Pierce lacks grains younger than 1600 Ma and thus is distinctly unlike the Ravalli Group of the Belt Supergroup, with which it was previously correlated. Possible correlatives that contain similarly old populations of zircons and feldspar-poor quartzite include the Neihart Formation (lowermost Belt Supergroup in Montana), Neoproterozoic quartzite (Syringa metamorphic sequence), and Cambrian quartzite. A sample from the North Fork of the Clearwater River yielded a large number of zircons with concordant Neoproterozoic ages, all of which had low Th/U ratios that suggest either a Neoproterozoic metamorphic event or the transport and deposition of zircons that were metamorphosed in the Neoproterozoic. SHRIMP (sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe) dating of a granite (now augen gneiss) that intruded sedimentary rocks west of Pierce, Idaho, yields an age of 1379 ± 12 Ma based on seven of fourteen analyses; this provides a lower age limit for sediment deposition of some rocks mapped as metamorphosed Belt Supergroup, and which had detrital zircon populations in the 1700 to 1400 Ma range. Additional analyses of three zircon rims yield an age range of 87–82 Ma, which is similar to the youngest ages from the North Fork sample. We interpret these ages to reflect the time of zircon overgrowth synchronous with the emplacement of the Cretaceous Idaho Batholith. None of the metasedimentary rocks dated can be older than Mesoproterozoic, and, with the exception of the Bertha Hill quartzite, none can be older than the Belt–Purcell Supergroup
Assessment of tertiary reed beds in chemically-dosed wastewater treatment plants for phosphorus removal
Eutrophication is one of the problems affecting the environmental quality standards of fresh waters. Phosphorus (P) is considered a main nutrient contributing to this. In the UK, the Water Industry is responsible for c. 50% of the total phosphorus load to freshwater ecosystems. Within this, small wastewater treatment plants (WwTPs) (<2,000 population equivalent) have a significant role since they represent 75% of all WwTPs in the UK.
The current option for P removal from wastewater is chemical precipitation through the dosing of iron (Fe) salts in combination with a tertiary filtration treatment step. This study aims to determine the transformation processes whereby tertiary reed beds permanently store or release iron and phosphorus in chemically-dosed sites to provide recommendations regarding the conditions where reed beds can be used as such final filtration treatment in small WwTPs. This was carried out through sampling campaigns in 14 full-scale tertiary reed beds.
Chemically-dosed WwTPs with tertiary reed beds can perform satisfactorily achieving phosphorus removals above 85% and average P and Fe final effluent concentrations of 0.7 mg P/L and 0.2 mg Fe/L, respectively, both well below consents (2 mg TP/L and 4 mg Fe/L). The majority of the total phosphorus in the reed bed influents was associated to either suspended solids or dissolved fractions, whereas 60¬90% of the effluent TP is in the dissolved form. Occasional episodes of phosphorus release from the reed bed can occur, as evidenced in an increase in soluble reactive phosphorus in the effluent. The main mechanism for trapping of Fe and P in mature beds was settlement of suspended particles, with phosphorus and iron concentrations in the accumulated sludge being up to 55.9 g P/kg dry matter and 246.6 g Fe/kg DM. The removal of particulate pollutants was successful in the reed beds studied, but colloidal and dissolved particles passing through the beds untreated. This could compromise the use of reed beds with future tightening P consents if the current chemical dosing practices are unchanged

Nitrogen removal from industrial wastewater by hybrid constructed wetland systems
The efficiency in nitrogen removal from wastewater generated at CSBP Ltd fertiliser and chemical manufacturer by two hybrid constructed wetland mesocosms was compared. The mesocosms were set up in order to help clarify the reasons why the two year old constructed wetland located at the industrial facility, a 1.2 ha free water surface/vertical flow conjugated system, has performed under the 50% removal expectation (16% for NH4+-N, 39% for NO3--N and 20% for total nitrogen). It is believed that the short retention time and insufficient oxygen transfer may be limiting nitrification. A free water surface/vertical flow wetland, simulating the design and operation mode of the industry’s wetland, and a vertical/horizontal flow, an alternative system, were tested. All systems were set in duplicates and planted with Schoenoplectus validus. On average, removals of NH4+-N, NO3--N and total nitrogen (TN) for the free water surface/vertical flow mesocosm were 79%, 78% and 79% respectively, hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 10.4 days. The vertical/horizontal flow system performed better for ammonium removal (97%) but it failed to remove nitrate properly (-10%), TN removal was 66%, HRT = 8.5 days. The vertical flow stage of the vertical/horizontal flow mesocosm alone removed 95% of the NH4+-N and almost doubled the concentration of nitrate in its outflow in 2.4 days, indicating the nitrification capacity of vertical flow systems. The experimental free water surface/vertical flow system which simulates the CSBP wetland outperformed the full scale one and this may be attributed to the lower hydraulic loading rate received by the mesocosm
Accelerated testing of multi-walled CNT composite electrical contacts for MEMS switches
The use of gold-coated multi-walled carbon nanotube (Au/MWCNT) bilayer composite surfaces has been discussed in previous work as a method for improving the reliability of switch contacts [1, 2]. A consequence of large lifetimes means that testing to failure is time consuming. To address this we developed a MEMS-based test platform which enables testing at high frequency [3]. The MEMS devices were developed in a two stage process. In this paper the results obtained from the first stage design for a MEMS-based test platform device are discussed. Further to this, an overview of the design of the second stage device is given. Using the first-stage device, at a current of 50 mA (at 4 V), the composite yielded a lifetime in excess of 44 million hot-switching cycles [4]. At a lower load current of 10 mA, the contact maintained a stable contact for >500 million hot-switching cycles. As well as monitoring the contact resistance, SEM images of the surface before and after testing are presented. The first stage MEMS-based developmental device is a step towards a smaller integrated and packaged high-lifetime metal-contacting MEMS switch. An overview of the considerations for the redesign is given with a discussion on the predicted performance and improvement for accelerated switch testing
Analysis of phosphorus flux in reed beds at chemically dosed wastewater treatment works
Phosphorus (P) as a macronutrient contributes to eutrophication. In the UK, iron
(Fe) and aluminium (Al) salt dosing is a well-established wastewater treatment
strategy for its removal. Small works with a population equivalent (p.e.) under
2,000 often employ horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (HSSF
CWs) as a means for subsequent tertiary (3°) treatment. Although these
significantly improve the final effluent’s quality, P release has, on occasions,
been observed. This study attempts to contribute to a better understanding of P
flux mechanisms in reed beds and to outline a mitigation strategy countering P
release.
The literature review identified that, in given circumstances, the P concentration
gradient, redox conditions, pH and Fe cycling are key potential factors
governing P flux. The field survey revealed that secondary (2°) P effluent
concentration negatively correlated with P release from the reed bed. In
laboratory scale sludge reactor series, P concentration in wastewater was
observed to be buffered by molecular diffusion driven by a concentration
gradient in the sludge-wastewater interface. The instantaneous equilibrium point
appeared to lie in 0.1 to 0.5 mg/L interval in the first 10 minutes, shifting to 1
mg/L in the next 8 hours and higher in the later stages. In biologically active
systems, the shift of the equilibrium point seemed to be dominated by changes
in redox potential linked to simultaneous microbial utilisation of oxygen (O2) and
nitrate (NO3
-
), eventually leading to a reduction of Fe (III) and sulphate (SO4
2-
),
with subsequent P release. The start of Fe (III) reduction coincided with
reductive depletion of nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) below 1 mg/L. In systems with
limited biological activity, P release was linked to disassociation from Fe-P
compounds under decreasing pH. In an experiment assessing hydrodynamics,
an increase was recorded in Fe and P flux fluctuation due to convection. Based
on the findings, maintaining hydraulic residence time (HRT) under 24 hours and
reed bed influent in concentrations above 0.5 mg/L total phosphorus (TP) and
15 mg/L NO3-N is proposed as a means to prevent or delay P release
Space, time and the artist : the philosophy and aesthetics of Wyndham Lewis.
My study, in Part I of this thesis, of Wyndham Lewis's philosophical
principles outlined in Time and Western Man (1927), reveals a mode of
thought which is inspired and determined by beliefs about visual art
and its metaphysical significance. The ultimate rejection of the
philosophies of Bergson, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche and the
'Space-Timeists' such as Spengler, Whitehead and Alexander, in pursuit
of a 'philosophy of the eye' was, I argue, fashioned according to
aesthetic objections. 'Time-values' are challenged by 'space-values',
ideally expressible for Lewis in the static, spatial medium of visual
art.
The aesthetics of Vorticism, discussed in Part II, was formalized in
the two Blast journals (1914-15), and provides the key to an
understanding of Lewis's later philosophy in its negation of
Bergsonist-related doctrines. His aversion to chronologism' had
emerged in various ways well before the public launch of Vorticism and
had subsequently achieved a subtle, effective coherence in the 'logic
of contradictions' which directed the theoretical strategies of Blast.
But In modernism Lewis recognized 'empty' abstraction and thus the
taint of the time-cult itself. As a method of working, abstraction
was not abandoned, but was directed away from the sensational and
emotional in the service of intellect and rational thought.
In order to clarify the interdependence of art and philosophy in
Lewis's thought, I propose two schematic models. The first
characterizes Lewis's philosophical principles and posits the concept
of the vortex as Lewis's noumenon. The second superimposes the
aesthetic values and form of the vortex symbol itself as a prior
justification of the philosophical schema: each 'model' is clearly
incomplete without cognizance of the other. Since, for Lewis, the
essential character of Vorticism was first expressed in art practice,
the findings of this thesis support Lewis's own retrospective view
(1956), that Vorticism was a 'new philosophy' in visual form

This thesis considers Neo Hoodoo and Satire in three novels by Ishmael Reed during the black power, black aesthetic and black feminist movements of the seventies. Through an examination of Robert E. Fox???s interpretation of Rene Girard???s Triangle of Desire: Past, Present and Future, this project seeks to conduct a closer reading of Ishmael Reed???s three novels to demonstrate how they form a Triangle of Black Desire: Past, Present and Future. Reading Reed???s three novels as a triangle of black desire requires a sociopolitical and historical approach that asks readers to become aware of the black cultural movements which shaped some of the misogynistic viewpoints of the characters within the novels and not solely the sentiments of its author. Therefore, this thesis will identify the concerns of the black feminist movement which labeled Ishmael Reed and his works as misogynistic and will discuss ways in which these novels may be reconsidered in the socio-historical and socio-political context in which Ishmael Reed intended
