    No full text
This technique relies on the ability of piezoelectric transducers to generate a high frequency (HF) acoustic field into the scanned media. Such transducers are obtained using particular materials and fabrication processes. They are optimized through modeling of their electromechanical behaviour and acoustic radiation pattern, which usually requires the use of several models. A new algorithm has been developped and is presented in this report, which is based on the coupling of pseudospectral and finite-diffrence methods to simulate both the generation and the propagation of acoustic waves in the transducer and the surrounding media, using a single model. This hybrid algorithm has been used to simulate various transducers and the results were accordingly compared to theory and experiments. It has also been used to study the influence of various parameters on the performance of several single-element and array transducer devices

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Study and realisation of surface acoustic wave sensor : towards using porous silicon as sensitive layer

Surface wave sensors (SAW) have several advantages, such as robustness, adaptability and low manufacturing costs. One of the key performance factors of this type of sensor is its sensitivity. Generally to improve it, the efforts focus on the sensitive layer. An innovative alternative is the increase of the active surface by porosifying the substrate. The opening of the piezoelectric material along the path of propagation and its replacement by porous silicon will thus enable the capture of the species to be detected in the pores. The objective of this thesis is to propose a new sensor architecture allowing the use of porous silicon as a guiding and sensing layer

Bonded structures are of particular interest because of their low cost, light weight, generally good distribution of stresses and ease of assembly. However, adhesive layers can suffer from certain defects such as delaminations or porosity. It is therefore necessary to develop tools for non-destructive testing of interfaces. Among these tools, acoustic microscopy represents an essentially qualitative means of characterizing these adhesion defects thanks to the images obtained, but it also makes it possible to extract quantitative information by using the V(z) method associated with it. This method allows characterizing the adhesion quality and the mechanical properties of an interface layer by means of the reconstruction of the reflection coefficient or the dispersion curves of the guided waves. The mathematical formalism for simulating the reflection coefficient and dispersion curves corresponding to isotropic and anisotropic multilayered structures is first derived. Models of imperfect interfaces between layers, taking into account the isotropic and anisotropic nature of the materials are then implemented. In the case of isotropic media, the interface layer is modeled by a viscoelastic material whose viscosity is governed by a parameter that modulates the adhesion quality. In the anisotropic case, the interface layer is modeled by a virtual porous material whose porosity factor and pore orientation can be modified, thus making it possible to take into account defects, such as delaminations, which can have privileged orientations within the interface.Reflection coefficients and guided waves dispersion curves for isotropic and anisotropic bi-layers are then calculated. The reflection coefficients provide access to the resonance modes of these structures. The correspondence between resonance modes in metal structures immersed in water and guided waves dispersion curves for the same structures under free surface conditions is first established. Simulations are then carried out to study the influence on the resonance modes of several parameters characterizing an adhesive layer providing the bond between two metal layers. Coupling modes of the overall structure are identified and are the subject of particular attention because they are found to be more sensitive to the variation of the properties of the interface layer. For the isotropic case, the viscoelastic parameter has a strong impact on the coupling resonance modes of the structure, and makes it possible to characterize defects such as delaminations or polymerization defects. For the anisotropic case, the porosity factor allows modeling the adhesion quality, and also offers the possibility to characterize defects with privileged orientations related to those of the pores introduced in the model. Finally, experimental data obtained by the V(z) method are processed. The V(z) curves are thus inverted in order to reconstruct the associated reflection coefficients. The adhesion quality as well as the elastic constants of an adhesive layer embedded in a metallic multilayer are characterized using optimization algorithms based on the simplex method. The results concerning the evaluation of the adhesion quality are mixed, mainly due to experimental difficulties. Concerning the characterization of the elastic constants of an epoxy layer bonding two metallic layers, the optimization algorithm allows a proper evaluation of its constants, providing a good agreement between the simulated and measured guided waves velocities

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Recent progresses in manufacturing processes allow a better control of dimensions and chemical composition of nanostructures, This leads to the emergence of a new family of devices known as Nano ElectroMechanical Systems or NEMS. These devices show novel physical properties and functional characteristics due to their reduced size. Besides, their operating power consumption are tiny, making the use of their environment as energy source highly attractive. The design of a generator that scavenge the surrounding energy of the NEMS is quite a challenge; indeed, such a microharvester should be small enough to ensure that the dimensions of the whole autonomous device are still acceptable. in that context, we investigate ZnO nanowires as active elements of piezoelectric nano and microgenerator. We have specially developed two models of nanowire that take into account of the piezoelectric-semiconducting coupling to appreciate its effects on the electromechanical conversion of energy

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
