Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Study of resonant modes of a periodic metallic array near a dielectric interface: Evanescent-to-propagating coupling via surface plasmon excitation
The structural modes of a 2D periodic array of metallic cylinders near a dielectric interface are studied, for large and small wavelength-to-period ratios. We show that there are two clearly distinguished kinds of resonances: waveguide modes of the gap between the array and the interface, and eigenmode excitations (plasmons). While waveguide modes are present for both polarizations, surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) only occur for p polarization, and, under particular conditions, this mechanism can produce an efficient coupling (about 60%) between the incident evanescent wave and the eigenmodes supported by the structure, which produces an enhanced transmitted propagating order. The response of the structure is analysed in detail by varying its relevant parameters, paying particular attention to the interplay between SPPs and Rayleigh anomalies, and its effect on the grating response. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd.Fil: Skigin, Diana Carina. Refraction index sensor based on phase resonances in a subwavelength structure with double period
In this paper, we numerically demonstrate a refraction index sensor based on phase resonance excitation in a subwavelength-slit structure with a double period. The sensor consists of a metal layer with subwavelength slots arranged in a bi-periodic form, separated from a high refraction index medium. Between the metallic structure and the incident medium, a dielectric waveguide is formed whose refraction index is going to be determined. Variations in the refraction index of the waveguide are detected as shifts in the peaks of transmitted intensity originated by resonant modes supported by the compound metallic structure. At normal incidence, the spectral position of these resonant peaks exhibits a linear or a quadratic dependence with the refraction index, which permits us to obtain theunknown refraction index value with a high precision for a wide range of wavelengths. Since the operating principle of the sensor is due to the morphological resonances of the slits? structure, this device can be scaled to operate in different wavelength ranges while keeping similar characteristics.Fil: Skigin, Diana Carina. Coupling of evanescent s-polarized waves to the far field by waveguide modes in metallic arrays
In this paper we show that enhanced optical transmission through a 1D periodic slit array comprising real metallic cylinders is possible for s-polarization when the array is near a dielectric interface. We investigate the behaviour of this structure under s-polarized illumination, in which case surface plasmons are not excited. Numerical results show that the transmitted intensity appears as a periodic function of the slit depth, for propagating as well as for evanescent incidence, suggesting that this behaviour is related to the excitation of waveguide modes in the slits. In particular, the coupling of evanescent to propagating electromagnetic waves is investigated. It is shown that s-polarized evanescent waves generated at the interface can be transformed into propagating waves if the optical width of the slits allows propagation of the first waveguide mode. As the interface approaches the array, the transmitted intensity increases for evanescent incidence. © IOP Publishing Ltd.Fil: Lester, Marcelo Fabian. Striking properties of light transmitted by a double period nanoslit structure under evanescent incidence
The excitation of phase resonances in dual-period wire structures under evanescent incidence is investigated and numerically reported for the first time. The diffraction problem of a compound structure comprising subwavelength perfectly conducting wires and slits near a dielectric interface is solved by the modal method, which has been extended to consider evanescent incidence via illumination under the total internal reflection condition. We demonstrate evanescent-to-propagating conversion in the transmitted intensity via resonances of different types, such as Fabry?Perot and Rayleigh anomalies. The results exhibit points in common with those obtained for simple structures (single wire/slit per period), but, on the other hand, there are striking differences, mainly arising from the excitation of phase resonances in the structure. These features allow an angular and spectral control of the transmitted response, which opens up new degrees of freedom for the design of input/output couplers and other devices.Fil: Lester, Marcelo Fabian. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
