    Includes bibliographical references and index."This volume focuses on the relationship and interaction of language and science between 1700 and 1900. It pays particular attention to English history writing in Late Modern English as compiled in the Corpus of History English Texts (CHET), a newly released subcorpus of the Coruña Corpus of English Scientific Writing. The chapters cover methodological issues, the period and the status of discipline itself, as well as pilot studies for the description of scientific discourse using CHET. They embrace topics in several linguistic fields: discourse analysis, syntax, semantics, morphosyntax. The studies take into account extralinguistic parameters of texts, such as year of publication, sex of the author, geographical provenance of authors and the communicative formats/genres to which the text sample belongs. In the particular case of CHET, the collected samples can be grouped in eight different categories and such categories, as well as the above-mentioned metadata information, can be used to search the corpus.     Antonio Tiraboschi (1838–1883), one of the most prolific scholars living in Bergamo in the second half of the Nineteen century and the author of the Vocabolario dei Dialetti Bergamaschi Antichi e Moderni (1873) [Dictionary of the ancient and modern Bergamo dialects], is a well-known Romance dialectologist. His research interests, however, included other disciplinary areas, such as palaeography and archival sciences, which enabled him to compile a Medieval Bergamasco Glossary [Glossario Bergamasco Medioevale], whose manuscript, yet unpublished, is deposited in the local Biblioteca Civica Angelo Mai. In this contribution to the memory of Maria Vittoria Molinari, we provide a description of the semantic domains to which the lexemes of Langobard origins mentioned in the Glossary belong. Most of these lexemes are attested in other Italian regions, and hence, well-documented in the literature. Accordingly, we will focus on Tiraboschi’s dialectological and linguistic comments, as well as on the linguistic traits displayed by the extracts quoted in order to exemplify each lexical entr

    Tra la Vita e la Morte: Simone di Filippo e Pietro di Giovanni Lianori per i Battuti bolognesi

    The article focuses on some new findings regarding the supposed activity of Simone di Filippo (Bologna, documented from 1354, dead in 1399), the most productive Bolognese painter of the latter half of the 14th Century, also known as Simone dei Crocifissi, for the local confraternities of Santa Maria della Vita and Santa Maria della Morte. A sacred image of the Virgin and Child now visible above the high altar of Santa Maria della Vita was attributed to Simone in the 17th Century. However, an unknown 18th-Century author has already considered the painting as close to the Madonna in Fiesso di Castenaso (Bologna), signed by Pietro di Giovanni Lianori (Bologna, documented 1406-1466), one among the protagonists of late-gothic painting in Bologna in the first half of the 15th Century. As I have recently argued, the Madonna della Vita shows a style updated to Bolognese late-gothic artistic trends and can thus be attributed to Lianori himself. On the other hand, thanks to the discovery of an 18th-Century record, it is possible to advance that the cross signed by Simone now held in the church of Santo Stefano was commissioned by the confraternity of Santa Maria della Morte

    About twenty years after R. Wenskus’s thorough revision of the Old Germanic paradigm, M. Vittoria Molinari’s La Filologia germanica appeared in 1980. Until then, in Italy, the study of Germanic philology had been dominated by works that were heavily indebted to Indo-European linguistics, and it was with the aim of overcoming these limits that the author recovered some elements that marked P. Scardigli’s historical approach. The linguistic analysis remained undisputedly prominent, but the innovative introduction combined with the subdivision of the book into geo-linguistic areas allowed the author to focus attention on historical-political elements as well as on the religious and literary phenomena. The criticism of the concept of an original, monolithic Germanentum, and the attempt to overcome the traditional constraints of linguistics and textual criticism enabled the work to widen the ‘Germanic’ issue into an overall cultural proble
