Global and local two-sample tests via regression
Two-sample testing is a fundamental problem in statistics. Despite its long history, there has been renewed interest in this problem with the advent of high-dimensional and complex data. Specifically, in the machine learning literature, there have been recent methodological developments such as classification accuracy tests. The goal of this work is to present a regression approach to comparing multivariate distributions of complex data. Depending on the chosen regression model, our framework can efficiently handle different types of variables and various structures in the data, with competitive power under many practical scenarios. Whereas previous work has been largely limited to global tests which conceal much of the local information, our approach naturally leads to a local two-sample testing framework in which we identify local differences between multivariate distributions with statistical confidence. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach both theoretically and empirically, under some well-known parametric and nonparametric regression methods. Our proposed methods are applied to simulated data as well as a challenging astronomy data set to assess their practical usefulness.

Optimization Techniques for Configuration of Advanced Wireless Networks
This thesis is a collection of research topics that pertain to the optimal configuration of wire-less networks. We start with techniques for the configuration of indoor testbeds that are used to assess novel protocols and application concepts under controlled and repeatable conditions. We also examine the wireless networks in which nodes can exploit stochastic energy harvesting, wherein the network configurations are described by energy-aware packet transmission policies. Finally, we consider an enhanced achievability scheme for the non-degraded Gaus-sian fading broadcast channel with channel state known only at the receivers. In this system, a network configuration is given by the assignment of transmitted signal components to the receivers. A fundamental issue common to synergistic research via testbed emulation is the replication of communication links of specified quality. It has been shown that the system-level mapping from the real world to the testbed can be established by the equivalence of average link gains. In this thesis, we investigate link gain matrix mapping methodologies for two different applications: hierarchical networks with a fixed access point (AP), and mesh networks. For the AP networks, we seek to minimize the root-mean-square mapping difference between the testbe

A Compact Desakota?: Peri-Urban Areas in the Jing-Jin-Ji Megaregion (China)
This thesis explores possible transformations of peri-urban areas in the Jing-Jin-Ji megaregion (China) in order to improve the region’s performance in terms of environmental and social sustainability. Peri-urbanity in East-Asia - or Desakota, a term coined by Terry McGee in the 1990s - can be conceptualized as a combination of easing urban agglomerations and different forms of rural transformation. Being bypassed by economic metropolitan structures, it forms a diffuse mix of agricultural, industrial, and residential patches. Dramatic levels of air pollution and the loss of agricultural land threaten environmental and social structures. What was once called the hinterland has lost its original function. The shortcomings of spatial planning practices and regional governance should be counteracted by readjusted principles of urbanism. It is hypothesized that integration and compactness can be suitable tools to contribute to the sustainable development of megaregions, if they adapt to the complexities and scales posed by mega-regionalization. This hypothesis is explored through in-depth analyses on multiple scales and their translation into (design) strategies. European case studies help to make transitions between well-known icons of regional planning and design, and the unknowns of the Chinese megaregion. The methodology lays out an agenda that leads to three concrete outcomes. Firstly, the “Desakota Dilemmas” clarify the difficulties of balancing environmental and social concerns. Secondly, the “Desakota Strategies” present proposals for alternative forms of peri-urbanization that are based on the diversity of village communities and the detailed analysis of spatial pre-conditions. Thirdly, the “Jing-Jin-Ji Planning Framework” synthesizes the outcomes of analysis and design, and presents recommendations that advocate for a type of regional planning that is based on collective action, multi-scalar cooperation, and the recognition of uncertainty.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Urbanis
