    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Comparative performance of high and medium resolution cameras for defect detection in carbon-fiber reinforced composites by digital shearography

    The performance of defect detection in composite materials using digital shearography is important for correct decision-making in non-destructive testing. In this work, we compared a high-resolution 24-megapixel digital still camera (DSLR) and a conventional medium-resolution 5-megapixel camera to determine the detectability of blind holes in an aerospace-graded carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sample. The hole diameters ranged from 0.2 to 3 mm with a material thickness of 4 mm and the test sample dimensions of 200×200 mm. The sample was heated and observed from the front (defect-free side) by three halogen lamps for 5 minutes in pulsed heating mode. Speckle interferograms were acquired during the heating and cooling phases from both cameras simultaneously using identical shearing interferometers and shearing distances. Phase maps were calculated using the 4+4 temporal phase step algorithm and then unwrapped. Further, defect-induced deformation (DID) phase maps were obtained by polynomial curve fitting. The DID phase maps obtained from the two cameras were compared. Blind holes with diameters up to 1 mm were detected, which are one of the smallest defects detected with shearography and reported in literature. In addition, the DLSR camera was able to detect holes of 0.8 mm in diameter. We observed that nearly comparable detection capabilities were obtained from both cameras, even though the spatial resolution of the second camera (DLSR) was 5 times higher. Possible reasons of this limitation include effects such as fiber-related deformation in CFRP and speckle noise.Structural Integrity & Composite

    EXTREME shearography: High-speed shearography instrument for in-plane surface strain measurements during an impact event

    This work presents the design and the latest experimental results on the surface strain measurements during an impact event obtained with the EXTREME high-speed shearography instrument. The shearography technique is used in this project to provide a quantitative measurement of the surface strain development at the first moments of the impact event (μs time scale) which may reveal the initiation of the failure mechanisms in composite materials. Experimentally measured surface strain components over the field of view will be used as input and validation data for new numerical and analytical models of the impact response of composites. The new configuration of the shearography instrument realises measurements of the in- and out-of-plane surface strain components to improve coupling with the numerical models. Two viewing directions (shearing interferometers) with a double-frame approach are used to capture the interferograms during the impact. The interferometers realise a double-imaging Mach-Zehnder scheme for the spatial phase-shifting with independent control of the shearing amount and the carrier frequency. The set of technical parameters of the developed shearography instrument makes it one of the most extreme applications of shearography for material characterisation.     Light scattering by gold nanoparticles cured in optical adhesive at optical fibre interfaces

    This study forms a part of the research in using nanoparticles (NPs) to increase the intensity of light scattering signal in the optical fibres. Increasing the intensity of the backscattered light signal in the optical fibres shows the potential to increase the signal-to-noise ratio in order to improve the sensitivity of the backscatter reflectometry. Doping NPs into the optical fibres can greatly increase the scattered light. However, it is not easy to manufacture NP-doped optical fibres to test different designs. To overcome this problem, in our former work we used the method of dropping refractive index matching liquid containing gold NPs at the optical fibres end tips to investigate the intensity change of the scattered light from the interfaces. In this paper, some new initial experimental results for the scattered light between the optical fibre end tips are shown. Gold NPs have been mixed into the optical adhesive (Norland) and is then dropped and cured at the optical fibre end tips. A backscatter reflectometer (LUNA ODiSI-B) was used in the experiment to measure the intensity of scattered light distribution between the optical fibre end tips. We investigated 4 cases of light scattering between the optical fibre end tips: (i) the backscattered light intensity distribution in the case of the air gap between the optical fibre end tips; (ii) the backscattered light intensity distribution with optical adhesive between the optical fibre end tips; (iii) the backscattered light intensity distribution with optical adhesive containing gold NPs (gold nanopowder (<100 nm), Sigma Aldrich) between the optical fibre end tips before curing process and (iv) the backscattered light intensity distribution with optical adhesive containing gold NPs between the optical fibre end tips after the curing process. Our initial findings are that the scattered light by gold NPs at the optical fibre interfaces can be detected by the backscatter reflectometer.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
