No full textLetter written by Isaac Peirce, a settler in Belpre, Ohio, to W. Jeffery Matthewson. The letter discusses Peirce's efforts to find good tenants for Matthewson's land. It discusses attacks on the settlement by American Indians, troop strength, and general living conditions in the area. The city of Belpre was the second permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory. Established along the Ohio River in 1789 by members of the Ohio Company, the location was surveyed the previous year as Belle-Prairie, French for "beautiful meadow.
Nonparametric extensions of nuclear equations of state: probing the breakdown scale of relativistic mean-field theory
No full textPhenomenological calculations of the properties of dense matter, such as relativistic mean-field theories, represent a pathway to predicting the microscopic and macroscopic properties of neutron stars. However, such theories do not generically have well-controlled uncertainties and may break down within neutron stars. To faithfully represent the uncertainty in this breakdown scale, we develop a hybrid representation of the dense-matter equation of state, which assumes the form of a relativistic mean-field theory at low densities, while remaining agnostic to any nuclear theory at high densities. To achieve this, we use a nonparametric equation of state model to incorporate the correlations of the underlying relativistic mean-field theory equation of state at low pressures and transition to more flexible correlations above some chosen pressure scale. We perform astrophysical inference under various choices of the transition pressure between the theory-informed and theory-agnostic models. We further study whether the chosen relativistic mean-field theory breaks down above some particular pressure and find no such evidence. Using simulated data for future astrophysical observations at about two-to-three times the precision of current constraints, we show that our method can identify the breakdown pressure associated with a potential strong phase transition

The recovered life of Isaac Anderson
No full text"Owned by his father, Isaac Harold Anderson (1835-1906) was born enslaved but went on to become a wealthy businessman, grocer, politician, publisher, and religious leader in the African American community in the state of Georgia. Elected to the state senate, Anderson replaced his white father there, and later shepherded his people as a founding member and leader of the Colored Methodist Episcopal church. He helped support the establishment of Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee, and helped freed people leave Georgia for safe havens in northern Mississippi and Arkansas. Eventually under threat to his life, Anderson fled to Arkansas, and then later still, to Holly Springs, Mississippi. Much of Anderson's unique story has been lost to history-until now. In The Recovered Life of Isaac Anderson, author Alicia K. Jackson presents a biography of Anderson and in it a microhistory of Black religious life and politics after emancipation. A work of recovery, the volume captures the life of a shepherd to his journeying people, and of a college pioneer, a CME minister, a politician, and a freed person"-

Three sets of 1e4 samples from the posterior distribution over equations of state are provided. These sets are drawn from the posterior conditioned on different combinations of radio pulsar observations, gravitational wave data, and NICER x-ray measurements. The data release contains the equation of state table and the corresponding table of neutron star observables for each sample. The posterior distributions one can generate from these samples approximate those plotted in Figs. 1-6 of the accompanying paper.
