Recent Developments in Neurofibromatosis Type 1
Purpose of review This review summarizes the recent clinical and genetic developments in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and provides an insight into the possible underlying pathomechanisms. Recent findings NF1, or von Recklinghausen disease, is one of the most common hereditary neurocutaneous disorders in humans. Clinically, NF1 is characterized by cafe-au-lait spots, freckling, skin neurofibroma, plexiform neurofibroma, bony defects, Lisch nodules and tumors of the central nervous system. The responsible gene, NF1, encodes a 2818 amino acid protein (neurofibromin). Pathological mutations range from single nucleotide substitutions to large -scale genomic deletions dispersed throughout the gene. In addition to the conventional mutation screening methods, a DNA chip microarray-based technology, combinational sequence-based hybridization, has been introduced to expedite mutation detection. Functional analysis has become more amenable following the development of the following: (1 ) primary Schwann cell cultures from NF1 patients; (2) mouse models; (3) proteomic technologies; and (4) mRNA silencing by RNA interference. These studies have shown that neurofibromin plays a role in adenylate cyclase and AKT- mTOR mediated pathways. It also appears to affect Ras-GTPase activating protein activity through the phosphorylation of protein kinase C which impacts on cell motility by binding with actin in the cytoskeleton. Summary Recent advances in the clinical features and molecular genetics of NF1 will be discussed together with insights into the underlying pathomechanisms of NF1

Purple Pigments: The Pathophysiology of Acute Porphyric Neuropathy
The porphyrias are inherited metabolic disorders arising from disturbance in the haem biosynthesis pathway. The neuropathy associated with acute intermittent porphyria (AIP ) occurs due to mutation involving the enzyme porphobilinogen deaminase (PBGD) and is characterised by motor-predominant features. Definitive diagnosis often encompasses a combination of biochemical, enzyme analysis and genetic testing, with clinical neurophysiological findings of a predominantly motor axonal neuropathy. Symptomatic and supportive treatment are the mainstays during an acute attack. If administered early, intravenous haemin may prevent progression of neuropathy. While the pathophysiology of AIP neuropathy remains unclear , axonal dysfunction appears intrinsically linked to the effects of neural energy deficits acquired through haem deficiency coupled to the neurotoxic effects of porphyrin precursors. The present review will provide an overview of AIP neuropathy, including discussion of recent advances in understanding developed through neurophysiological approaches that have further delineated the pathophysiology of axonal degeneration
Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy in East and West
Cerebral amyloid angiopathy, a vasculopathy characterised by the deposition of amyloid fibrils in the arteries and arterioles in the cerebral cortex and meninges, has been reported to be associated with intracerebral haemorrhage and cognitive impairment in the elderly. Advances in neuroimaging and validation of the clinical diagnostic criteria aid in making a correct clinical diagnosis. Associations with Alzheimer's disease, asymptomatic microbleeds and white matter changes on neuroimaging have an influence on the clinical treatment for patients with probable cerebral amyloid angiopathy. Reviewing the reports from Asian countries, we found that patients with cerebral amyloid angiopathy have a strong age-related prevalence and a consistent association with dementia, but a weaker correlation with intracerebral haemorrhage, most likely due to a higher incidence of hypertensive intracerebral haemorrhage. Involvement of the occipital lobe arteries by CAA is common in all races and ethnicities, while frontal lobe arteries may be more frequently involved in the East compared to the West. The clinical impact of cerebral amyloid angiopathy on intracerebral haemorrhage and cognitive impairment could be increasingly obvious in Asian countries with ageing populations, especially with improving control of hypertension, the leading cause of intracerebral haemorrhage
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
