Nat and his friends: A learning support in mathematics education
Full text linkWe describe a path which came into being after it was noted that Italian primary school children (aged 6-11 years)
have difficulty in understanding the necessity for using different numerical sets depending on the problem they
are dealing with. We decided to use a mostly visual support which would be simple, engaging and able to evolve
over time. Thus, the poster “Nat and his friends” was born, where the characters appear, for the first time, in the
moment in which a problem requires it in the five years of Italian primary school. Besides “Nat” (the set of natural
numbers), “Ra” (the set of rational numbers), “Rel” (the set of relative numbers), other characters were necessary,
that is, “Al”, “Geo”, “Misu”, “Alea”. “Geo” and “Alea” represent two areas, respectively that of geometry and that
of mathematics of uncertainty; “Al” is the “depositary” of procedures, while “Misu” steps in when there are
problems of measurement. Lastly, there is “Logic the Traveller”. This character, given that she is a “traveller”, is
not on the poster; she is mostly used when dealing with problems of classification

No full text1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006: sono gli anni delle 6 edizioni finora svolte della manifestazione "La matematica dei ragazzi: scambi di esperienze tra coetanei", il cui scopo è quello di promuovere lo scambio di conoscenze nel campo della matematica tra ragazzi della scuola primaria e secondaria. In ognuna di esse, dopo un periodo di preparazione fatto in classe sotto la guida degli insegnanti, che a loro volta hanno elaborato e discutsso i loro progetti nell'ambito del Nucleo di Ricerca Didattica del Dipartimento di Matematica e Informatica dell'Università di Trieste, per due giorni sono stati solo i ragazzi i veri protagonisti di questo "meeting" di matematica pensato apposta per loro: niente conferenze, nè tribune, ma solo comunicazione interattiva, con lavori di gruppo o presentazione di poster, tra le quattro mura di un'aula, tra una classe che si improvvisa "docente" ed un'altra classe visitatrice. Non si è trattato di mettersi in mostra per far vedere chi è "il più bravo", nè per quel che riguarda i ragazzi, nè per i loro docenti: è stato invece un tentativo di sottolineare le potenzialità della matematica, sia come linguaggio universale, sia come incentivo alla collaborazione.
L'antologia, che contiene i riferimenti per approfondire i temi dei lavori presentati e le indicazioni per contattare gli autori, è stata pensata ritenendo che da questa esperienza del Nucleo di Ricerca Didattica di Trieste possano trarre profitto nelle loro classi anche altri insegnanti. Questo primo volume è dedicato alle edizioni del 1996 e del 1998 e consta di tre parti. La prima riguarda la prima edizione (1996) e riporta dei brevi sunti scritti dagli insegnanti sull'attività svolta nei loro laboratori. Questi sono integrati da due relazioni di ragazzi di scuola media inferiore, scelte tra le più significative, e dalle impressioni di una bambina di scuola elementare, rappresentative dei sentimenti provati anche dagli altri suoi coetanei. La seconda concerne la seconda edizione (1998); qui ogni docente presenta qui una relazione sulle varie fasi del lavoro svolto, generalmente integrata da un elaborato dei ragazzi. Alcune di queste sono scritte in stretta collaborazione tra docente ed allievi. Il volume si conclude con una valutazione del lavoro svolto e con una rassegna di elaborati raccolti nel 1998, nei quali ragazzi di varie età descrivono impressioni ed emozioni provate partecipando a questa esperienza
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
