Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Development of new pre-treatments for the structural bonding of aluminum surfaces
No full textLe collage structural est une technique de plus en plus utilisée dans le domaine industriel car elle constitue une alternative aux assemblages mécaniques classiques tels que le soudage, le rivetage ou encore le boulonnage, car plus rapide et plus simple à mettre en œuvre. L'un des objectifs de ce projet de thèse vise, à terme, de réduire la consommation de carburant des véhicules afin de limiter leurs émissions de CO2 dans l'atmosphère. Pour cela, un des leviers est la réduction du poids des automobiles, en remplaçant l'acier par de l'aluminium, plus léger. La méthode d'assemblage par collage des surfaces d’aluminium a donc été introduite ainsi que les notions de préparation et de traitement de surface afin de promouvoir et rendre durable l'adhésion des composés sur ces surfaces. Le développement de ces traitements de surface, également appelés couches d'accroche (CA) dans ces travaux de thèse, est précisément au cœur du projet. Différents polymères constitutifs des couches d’accroche, comprenant différentes fonctions latérales d’ancrage, avec ou sans phosphore, ont été étudiés et comparés avec des références commerciales présentes sur le marché pour des applications de collage structural.Les objectifs scientifiques ont d'abord été de caractériser morphologiquement les matériaux à différentes étapes : les couches d’accroche elles-mêmes déposées sur des substrats aluminium, ainsi que le système collé complet, c'est-à-dire le substrat revêtu puis collé. Pour cela des analyses microscopiques (MEB-FIB, MET-ARM) et de surface (XPS) ont été mises en œuvre pour déterminer les épaisseurs des couches ainsi que les mécanismes physico-chimiques d’ancrage vis-à-vis du substrat d’aluminium. De plus, les performances mécaniques des couches d’accroche ont été évaluées avant et après vieillissement, dans un cycle de corrosion. Ainsi, des essais mécaniques de cisaillement à simple recouvrement, de flexion trois points, de micro-sclérométrie et des tests Arcan ont été conduits pour caractériser l'interface couche-adhésif et comparer les performances, en termes de collage, de ces différentes couches d’accroche. Enfin, le point clé de ces travaux de thèse est d'établir des liens entre la formulation (nature, concentration) et les paramètres du procédé (temps d’immersion dans les bains de traitement), afin de pouvoir établir la corrélation (micro)structure - propriétés – performances mécaniques des couches d’accroche.Structural bonding is a technique increasingly used in the industrial field because it is an alternative to conventional mechanical assemblies such as welding, riveting or bolting, because it is faster and easier to implement. One of the objectives of this thesis project is, in the long term, to reduce the fuel consumption of vehicles in order to limit their CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. For this purpose, one of the levers is the reduction of the weight of cars, by replacing steel with aluminum, which is lighter. The method of assembly by structural bonding of the aluminum surfaces was thus introduced as well as the concepts of preparation and treatment of surface in order to promote and make sustainable the adhesion of the compounds on these surfaces. The development of these surface treatments, also called bonding layers (BL) in this thesis work, is precisely at the heart of the project. Different polymers constituting the bonding layers, including different lateral anchoring functions, with or without phosphorus, were studied and compared with commercial references present on the market for structural bonding applications.The scientific objectives were first to morphologically characterize the materials at different stages: the bonding layers themselves deposited on aluminum substrates, as well as the complete bonded system, i.e. the coated and then bonded substrate. For this purpose, microscopic (SEM-FIB, TEM-ARM) and surface (XPS) analyses were carried out to determine the thicknesses of the layers as well as the various physicochemical anchoring mechanisms with respect to the aluminum substrate. In addition, the mechanical performances of the bonding layers were evaluated before and after ageing, in a corrosion cycle. Thus, mechanical tests of single lap shear, three-point bending, micro-scratch and Arcan tests were conducted to characterize the bonding layer-adhesive interface and to compare the performances, in terms of bonding, of these different bonding layers. Finally, the key point of this thesis work is to establish links between the formulation (precursors, concentration) and the process parameters (immersion time in the treatment baths), in order establish the correlation (micro)structure - properties - mechanical performances of the bonding layers
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Full text linkWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
