Optimization of building energy performance by means of multi-scale analysis – Lessons learned from case studies
tThe sustainability of the built environment largely depends on its energy and environmental perform-ances. The overall objective, across the different phases of the building life cycle, is to improve buildingand system performances in terms of economics, comfort, environmental impact and durability.Several modelling methodologies have been developed in order to evaluate the energy performanceof buildings. Generally, every modelling methodology responds effectively to some specific tasks, butthere exists a lack of integration in particular with respect to the cross-disciplinary role of data. Given themulti-scale and multi-objective nature of the problem of optimization of the energy and environmentalperformances of the built environment, an appropriate synthesis and integration process in modellingmethodologies has to be identified, addressing realistically the uncertainties inherently present in mod-elling strategies.Visualization and data analysis techniques are successfully used in a wide variety of applications, bothin theoretical and applied domains, but questions remains about their robustness, efficiency and appli-cability to the problems introduced before. The paper aims to analyze critically these topics by meansof case studies, showing a possible path to create a multi-scale methodology able to synthesize all therelevant aspects
RELIABILITY OF IFC CLASSES IN ONTOLOGY DEFINITION AND COST ESTIMATION OF PUBLIC PROCUREMENT
Cost estimation is one of the most critical tasks in the architecture, engineering, construction, and facilities management industry (AEC/FM). The lack of a standardized support procedure for verifying the association of the cost to geometric objects cause a waste of time, inaccuracy and human errors in the cost estimates.
This research investigates how to identify a cost ontology within the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) database.
The results show that we can consider the cost element no longer as a natural language text string, detached from the digital model, but as a structured class in the IFC data model (IfcCostItem)

This paper presents the results of a survey on the potential of applying Building Information Modelling, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality tools to the context of designing Juvenile detention centres. Testing on a specific case study highlighted the main advantage offered by computer and network technologies, i.e., the maximization of the interaction between designers and stakeholders, bridging the gap between technical and common knowledge. The design and co-decision models tested, based on the use of inclusion methodologies supported by technological tools suitable for the particular study context, have made it possible to overcome the non–expert–user difficulties of understanding the technical documents and allowed to work in accordance with incremental logic, whereby the project is built, evaluated and corrected by successive approximations, taking into proper account problems and actions as a whole and in their interrelationships

Tools and Methods for "Quantifying" Urban Liveability: two Parallel University Teaching Experiences
The paper describes a specific educational experience carried out at two Italian universities within
distinct academic programs.
At the Politecnico di Milano, within the School of Architecture AUIC, an architectural design studio was held with the aim to identify urban regeneration opportunities near to an area undergoing significant enhancement and repurposing. Meanwhile, at the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Turin a course in a master's program on Digital Innovation for Living Environments, introduced students to spatial environments with diverse functionalities. The students analysed these environments to identify ways of supporting user needs through digital and innovative technologies. In both cases, spaces within public and private buildings, and urban spaces, were considered. Students were involved in qualitative and quantitative assessments of urban spaces' livability using a methodology based on the approach developed by the Barcelona Ecology Agency (AEUB). This approach aimed to synthesize, with a single indicator, the blend of qualitative and quantitative aspects contributing to the attractiveness and environmental well-being of places
Digital Twin for Acoustics and Stage Craft Facility Management in a Multipurpose Hall
Digital twins aim to virtually replicate the static and dynamic building characteristics through real-time connectivity between virtual and physical counterparts. Despite its potential, research into digital twins for facility management (FM) in multipurpose spaces is at an early stage, especially to control and optimize the various uses and configuration layouts. One of the major barriers to the adoption of digital twin technology in multipurpose buildings is the lack of interoperability, primarily between building information modeling (BIM) and Internet of things (IoT) data sources. This paper presents a possible digital-twin architecture to enable digital-twin applications aiming to impact building performance, acting on the facility management of stagecraft and variable acoustic architectural elements to control the reverberation time in real time. The case study of Roberto De Silva Multipurpose Hall is presented, in which the indoor acoustic quality is controlled by the digital twin that returns the reverberation time output as a function of stage equipment layouts, variable acoustic elements and hall occupancy
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
