Case series of HaNDL syndrome responding to valproic acid
© The Author(s) 2022.Objective: We report a case series of patients diagnosed with the syndrome of transient headache and neurological deficits with cerebrospinal fluid lymphocytosis (HaNDL) responding to high dose Valproic acid. Background: HaNDL syndrome is an infrequent entity, presenting with neurological impairment episodes and severe headache. A treatment to prevent the attacks has not been proposed yet. Results: We describe 6 patients with a definite diagnosis of HaNDL, responding to Valproic acid 1000–1500 mg/day. Conclusion: Although HaNDL’s self-limiting nature, episodes may cause important disability and can last up to 3 months. Valproic acid may be a good choice to prevent attacks due to its effect on cortical depression and fast titration
THE ORIGIN OF THE SAXONS BETWEEN HISTORY AND LEGEND. The present study aims at analysing the depiction of the origin of the Saxons and of their territorial expansions in a corpus of mainly Early Medieval texts. On the basis of the most influential representatives of this tradition, from the earliest Latin sources to the German versions compiled between the 9th and the 14th century, the strategies of each author and their possible political, social and cultural impact on their works’ audience will be discussed. I will try to demonstrate that the different accounts of the origin and conquers of the Saxons are almost always functional to the political legitimation of the Saxon sovereignty in the context of universal and imperial history. The base of these accounts is no oral vernacular tradition; quite the opposite, vernacular texts seem to derive from a Latin written tradition. At first and quite realistically the territorial expansion described in Latin sources is in the foreground; these texts are meant to meet contingent local political interests. Vernacular sources, on the other hand, pay more attention to the origin of the Saxons. In this, the reinforcement of the vision according to which the Saxons descended from Alexander the Great’s army is functional to increasing the prestige of the Saxons first and, later, as well of their legal tradition

MARNER AS MINNESÄNGER. This article deals with poems associated with a German poet of the 13th century known as “Der Marner”, under whose name both Latin and German Lieder as well as Sangsprüche have come down to us. Starting from the peculiar textual history of Marner’s Lieder, the paper discusses crucial questions such as stanza-linking and the overall unity of the poems, while examining the conception of the ‘author’, the formation of the œuvre as a whole, and the poetic status of the different types of poems. Finally the important question of the authenticity of Marner’s Minnelieder is raised. The central thrust of the article is a new interpretation of Marner’s Minnelyrik, one that allows specific poetic patterns to emerge, and thus throws light on the underlying literary interests of the author and cultural movements of which he was a part. What will be argued is that this œuvre, notwithstanding its close adherence to tradition, in fact has a far from conventional organisation and a striking originality of detail. These, it will be claimed, are two strong reasons why – as is also suggested by the unequivocal findings from the textual records – the whole œuvre might more convincingly be attributed to a single Sänger than to a series of different poets. The conclusion is that the corpus of Minnelieder transmitted under the name of “Der Marner” in the so called Große Heidelberger Liederhandschrift (Codex Manesse) should be seen as the work of a Sänger who firmly belongs to the tradition of professional singers whose repertoire comprised both Minnelieder and Sangsprüche and who could rely on a considerable poetic ability of their own
Zur Rezeption des Nibelungenlieds im 20. Jahrhundert. Joachim Fernaus 'Disteln für Hagen: Bestandsaufnahme der deutschen Seele' und Horst Pillaus Musical-Libretto 'Laß das, Hagen!'
Abstract: This essay examines two interesting examples of the 20th century reception of the MHG Nibelungenlied. In both texts the evident purpose is that of entertaining the reader/audience. In the case of Fernau’s book, in my opinion, the effect of this is to obscure the fact that the author is trying to make excuses for an extremely deplorable period in German history by offering a peculiar interpretation of old heroic myths. Pillau’s musical, by contrast, may be seen as an attempt to unmask such an abuse of the Nibelungenlied tradition for ideological reasons.
Politics of Anger and Trauma Disclosure in Michelle Bowdler’s Is Rape a Crime? A Memoir, an Investigation and a Manifesto (2020)
This article focuses on the memoir manifesto as an intersection of forms and analyzes Michelle Bowdler’s Is Rape a Crime? (2020) as being representative of this subgenre in the current ‘manifesto moment.’ Bowdler as author narrates through the lens of trauma, with an emphasis on the affects the political reflection of trauma evokes. Through the personal narrative, her anger about the injustices of rape culture is explored and affective truths are disclosed without adhering to the hegemonic narrative of overcoming trauma. Instead, the book narrates an emotional arc from lonely suffering to communal activism, engaging the reader in a mode of angry witnessing

Is Felix Salten the author of the Mutzenbacher novel (1906)? Yes and no
Josefine Mutzenbacher oder die Geschichte einer Wienerischen Dirne von ihr selbst erzählt, published in Vienna in 1906, represents one of the most fascinating cases of attribution of authorship in German literature. Although Josefine Mutzenbacher is usually attributed to Felix Salten, the author of the world-famous Bambi (1923), the novel’s authorship has never been confirmed, and many other candidates have been named as potential authors. Among them is Arthur Schnitzler, who published Reigen, a cycle of amorous adventures in Viennese society, in 1903. Some scholars, instead, have attributed the novel to such lesser-known writers as Ernst Klein and Willi Handl. The controversy surrounding the authorship of Josefine Mutzenbacher was the starting point for our stylometric analyses, and our results help to answer some unresolved questions in a debate that has lasted for more than 100 years. The analyses were performed using the R package Stylo, which enables an efficient application of Burrows’ Delta and its variants. Focusing on both the entire text and on the final pages, two different types of analysis were carried out: one combines 1200 different stylometric methods to compare the candidate authors Salten, Schnitzler, Bahr, Altenberg, Hofmannsthal, Klein and Handl; the other verifies the attribution using the ‘impostors’ method. The results show that the most probable author is Felix Salten, while none of the candidates could be identified as the author of the final pages, confirming the hypothesis that the text was left unfinished by Salten and completed by an as-yet-unidentified ghost-writer
The mystery of Sacrae cantiones (Nürnberg 1597): remarks on Jacob Handl and 16th-century printing practice / Uganka zbirke Sacrae cantiones (Nürnberg 1597): pojasnila o Jacobusu Handlu in tiskarski praksi v 16. stoletju
A copy of Sacrae cantiones, a collection of compositions by Jacob Handl – Gallus published in 1597 in Nuremberg, is preserved as a unicum in Gdańsk and in Warsaw. However, this is not a new edition but merely a copy of the fourth volume of the composer’s Opus musicum, printed in Prague in 1590, with a changed title-page. The author presents arguments to show that the Sacrae cantiones were created on the initiative of Georg Handl, the composer’s brother and printer, who in this way hoped to increase the chance of selling the rest of the examples of the Opus musicum that remained in stock after Jacob’s death.
AmLit / “Be the red worm in the dirt. Be the honeysuckle on the vine”: Queer Southern Place-Making in A Dirty South Manifesto (2020)
In light of homonormative narratives that privilege the urban as a future place of freedom, A Dirty South Manifesto (2020) by L. H. Stallings represents the manifesto's function of disrupting hegemonic narratives in its reconfiguration of thinking futurity and its spatial dimensions for marginalized Southerners. I read Stallings's manifesto as employing a place-making practice that condemns moral authority and aims at dismantling narratives based on Christian white heteropatriarchy and settler colonialist chronotopic social orders. Queer narrative temporality is the pivotal point through which linear progress can be countered. The manifesto's case studies of sexual resistance in Southern hip-hop and activism create a queer archive of the South which merges artistic and political imaginations and rural and urban spaces into Southern places. A Dirty South Manifesto invalidates hegemonic linear progress narratives such as metronormative narratives and instead can be read to follow Judith Roof's call for story systems. By prioritizing long-form discourse and literacy while embracing "obscene" sexual expressions, the text aims at utopian radical reinterpretations of what it means to be situated in the South
Am J Safe Patient Handl Mov
Low back pain is prevalent among nursing home personnel. Safe resident handling programs (SRHP) reduce injuries and costs. Previously, we reported variability in effectiveness and sought to identify reasons for differences among workers in resident handling equipment (RHE) use. In 8 nursing homes, nursing aides' (NAs) frequency of RHE use and reasons for inconsistent use were assessed by questionnaire up to 4 times after SRHP implementation. Ordered multinomial models examined correlates of RHE-usage frequency. At least two-thirds of NAs reported "often" or "always" lift use. Higher RHE use was related to higher SRHP commitment, higher prior SRHP expectations, older age, higher health self-efficacy, and lower supervisor support. "Device not available when needed" and "residents dislike" were major reasons consistently cited for not using RHE. While this program has been effective, attention to device availability, education of residents and family members on SRHP importance, and worker empowerment might increase usage further.U19 OH008857/OH/NIOSH CDC HHSUnited States/U19OH008857/ACL/ACL HHSUnited States/2021-10-28T00:00:00Z34721944PMC855240511761vault:3970
