    Low energy analysis techniques for CUORE

    CUORE is a tonne-scale cryogenic detector operating at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) that uses tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of130Te. CUORE is also suitable to search for low energy rare events such as solar axions or WIMP scattering, thanks to its ultra-low background and large target mass. However, to conduct such sensitive searches requires improving the energy threshold to 10 keV. In this paper, we describe the analysis techniques developed for the low energy analysis of CUORE-like detectors, using the data acquired from November 2013 to March 2015 by CUORE-0, a single-tower prototype designed to validate the assembly procedure and new cleaning techniques of CUORE. We explain the energy threshold optimization, continuous monitoring of the trigger efficiency, data and event selection, and energy calibration at low energies in detail. We also present the low energy background spectrum of CUORE-0 below 60keV.     CUORE sensitivity to 0νββ decay

    We report a study of the CUORE sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay. We used a Bayesian analysis based on a toy Monte Carlo (MC) approach to extract the exclusion sensitivity to the 0νββ decay half-life (T[superscript 0ν][subscript 1/2]) at 90% credibility interval (CI) – i.e. the interval containing the true value of T[superscript 0ν][subcript 1/2] with 90% probability – and the 3σ discovery sensitivity. We consider various background levels and energy resolutions, and describe the influence of the data division in subsets with different background levels. If the background level and the energy resolution meet the expectation, CUORE will reach a 90%  CI exclusion sensitivity of 2·10[superscript 25] year with 3 months, and 9·10[superscript 25] year with 5 years of live time.     Evaluation of Midazolam as a Premedication for General Anesthesia: A Retrospective Study

    Finding the ideal preoperative pharmacologic regimen for a patient's care plan can be challenging since more definitive and comprehensive data on the subject is needed (Barash, 2017). Medication therapies like premedication must be individualized for each patient. This study evaluated patients ages 18-65 undergoing non-emergent robotic/laparoscopic cholecystectomies and appendectomies from April 1, 2022, to April 1, 2024, to determine if administering intravenous midazolam preoperatively affected certain postoperative outcomes. The project's primary outcomes were length of post anesthesia care unit (PACU) stay, and length of stay in phase two recovery before hospital discharge. Secondary outcomes were the number of pain medications and antiemetic medications administered during the PACU and phase two recovery stay. Forty patients were included in the midazolam group, and 28 were in the non-midazolam group. Differences between the intervention groups in the PACU and phase two recovery times, pain medication, and antiemetic medication outcomes were all statistically insignificant. Most confidence intervals in the intervention outcomes were broad with large standard deviations likely due to confounding factors, such as small and uneven sample group sizes. More research is needed to look at the effect of midazolam on different variables, such as different surgical or patient populations

    The development of a reliable and valid scale to measure aesthetic pleasure in design

    There is a lack of consistency regarding the scales used to measure aesthetic pleasure. They are often chosen ad hoc or derived from other research fields but never validated for design. Moreover, those scales often do not measure aesthetic pleasure in isolation, but instead include its determinants (e.g., novelty). Therefore, we developed a scale to measure aesthetic pleasure. We also included scales to measure determinants known to influence aesthetic pleasure for discriminant validity purposes. In the exploratory phase, we identified highly reliable items representative of aesthetic pleasure and its determinants across product categories. In the validation phase, we confirmed these findings across different countries (Australia, Netherlands).     Precise measurement of 2ν β β decay of 100Mo with the CUPID-Mo detection technology

    © 2020, The Author(s). We report the measurement of the two-neutrino double-beta (2 νββ) decay of 100Mo to the ground state of 100Ru using lithium molybdate (Li2100MoO4) scintillating bolometers. The detectors were developed for the CUPID-Mo program and operated at the EDELWEISS-III low background facility in the Modane underground laboratory (France). From a total exposure of 42.235 kg× day, the half-life of 100Mo is determined to be T1/22ν=[7.12-0.14+0.18(stat.)±0.10(syst.)]×1018 years. This is the most accurate determination of the 2 νββ half-life of 100Mo to date

    Using Large Language Models for Binary Decompilation

    Denne oppgaven undersøker Store Språkmodellers evne til å dekompilere binære objekt-filer. Sagt med andre ord, vi måler deres evne til a rekonstruere den originale C kildekoden som produserte en binærfil. Noen språkmodeller har evnet å utføre oppgaver de aldri har blitt trent opp til, og oppgaveforfatteren har observert at de kan forstå og forklare lesbar assembly-kode. En hypotese om at språkmodeller også kan utføre dekompilering ble utformet basert på disse observasjonene. Et modulært system ble bygget i Python for å teste denne hypotesen. Systemet følger en prosess hvor C kildekode kompileres til binærfiler som tas ifra hverandre til en "disassembly" fil. Disse blir videre lest og dekompilert av ulike "prediktorer" som inkluderer både språkmodeller og en tradisjonell regelbasert dekompilator. Til slutt ble prestasjonene til prediktorene målt med en evalueringsalgoritme kalt CodeBLEU. Det modulære systemet lar oss enkelt bytte ut og konfigurere kompilatorer, "disassemblere," prediktorer og evalueringsalgoritmer. En rekke eksperimenter ble gjort for å undersøke hva slags faktorer som påvirker prediktorenes evne. Det modulære systemet legger også til rette for en rekke potensielle framtidige forskningsprosjekter. Resultatene viser en lovende dekompilerings-evne hos språkmodeller, men det diskuteres også hvorvidt CodeBLEU er det rette verktøyet for å måle denne evnen sammenlignet med andre metoder. Det blir gjort en sammenligning med et annet verktøy kalt Dekompile-eval, og muligheten for en manuell evaluerigs-prosess, med fokus på kode-korrekthet og lesbarhet.This thesis investigates the ability of Large Language Models (LLMs) to decompile binary object files. In other words we measure the ability to reconstruct the original C source code that produced a binary file. Some LLMs has shown the ability to perform tasks they where not originally trained to do, and based on observations by the thesis author they are able to understand and explain human readable assembly code. Based on these observations, it was hypothesized that they could also be able to perform binary decompilation. To test this hypothesis, a modular pipeline was built in Python for compiling and disassembling datasets of C source code, followed by running a range of `predictors', including LLMs prompted for this task and a traditional decompiler. Then, the performance of these predictors were evaluated using the CodeBLEU scoring algorithm. The modularity of the pipeline lets us easily swap out and configure different compilers, disassemblers, predictors and evaluators, letting us run a number of experiments to further investigate which factors affect the decompilation ability of our predictors. This also enables many interesting possibilities for further research projects. The results show promising performance in decompilation tasks for some LLMs. However, the thesis also discusses whether CodeBLEU is the correct tool for measuring this ability compared to other methods, being based partially on text similarity and not code correctness. This is compared to an alternative method called Decompile-eval, which uses re-compilation and testing to ensure code correctness, as well as the possibility of a manual evaluation process

    Configural and featural information in facial-composite images

    Eyewitnesses are often invited to construct a facial composite, an image created of the person they saw commit a crime that is used by law enforcement to locate criminal suspects. In the current paper, the effectiveness of composite images was investigated from traditional feature systems (E-FIT and PRO-fit), where participants (face constructors) selected individual features to build the face, and a more recent holistic system (EvoFIT), where they &lsquo;evolved' a composite by repeatedly selecting from arrays of complete faces. Further participants attempted to name these composites when seen as an unaltered image, or when blurred, rotated, linearly stretched or converted to a photographic negative. All of the manipulations tested reduced correct naming of the composites overall except (i) for a low level of blur, for which naming improved for holistic composites but reduced for feature composites, and (ii) for 100% linear stretch, for which a substantial naming advantage was observed. Results also indicated that both featural (facial elements) and configural (feature spacing) information was useful for recognition in both types of composite system, but highly-detailed information was more accurate in the feature-based than the holistic method. The naming advantage of linear stretch was replicated using a forensically more-practical procedure with observers viewing an unaltered &not;composite sideways. The work is valuable to police practitioners and designers of facial-composite systems
