Did sexist voters bring Italy its first female Prime Minister?

    No full text
We examined the role of hostile sexism in vote at the 2022 general election in Italy, where the largest among center-right parties was led by a woman, Giorgia Meloni. We analysed data from a sample of 1537 voters who participated in the 2022 ITANES survey. Hostile sexism was associated with male gender, lower education, higher religiosity, and right-wing orientation. As to vote choice, hostile sexism was positively associated with vote for Brothers of Italy and the other center-right parties. However, such association was significantly moderated by the evaluation of Giorgia Meloni, and disappeared among voters with a positive evaluation of her. Discussion focusses on the interplay between gender-related attitudes and candidate-based heuristics in vote choice

Fil: Cortese, Carmelo.Fil: Raía, Laura

Soybean is attacked by a great diversity of pests that cause economically important damage from seed germination through to maturity (Aragón et al., 1997; Aragón, 2002). The velvetbean caterpillar Anticarsia gemmatalis, a foliage-feeding insect, attacks the upper part of the plant. The peak stage of pest infestation extends from flowering to the start of grain maturation (Aragón, 2002). One of the methods employed in the control of A. gemmatalis and other soybean pests is the use of insecticides (Aragón & Flores, 2006). Several of them are pyrethroid formulations (alfamethrine, cypermethrin, betacyfluthrin, deltamethrin, lambdacyalothrin) and they are recommended in very small doses (Gamundi & Perotti, 2008). Pyrethroids are applied during the early stages of crop development (Massaro, 2008).Fil: Bertolotti, María A.. Universidad Nacional de Córdoba; ArgentinaFil: Peschiutta, María Laura. Patterns of Rationality: Recurring Inferences in Science, Social Cognition and Religious Thinking

    No full text
This book proposes an applied epistemological framework for investigating science, social cognition and religious thinking based on inferential patterns that recur in the different domains. It presents human rationality as a tool that allows us to make sense of our (physical or social) surroundings. It shows that the resulting cognitive activity produces a broad spectrum of outputs, such as scientific models and experimentation, gossip and social networks, but also ancient and contemporary deities. The book consists of three parts, the first of which addresses scientific modeling and experimentation, and their application to the analysis of scientific rationality. Thus, this part continues the tradition of eco-cognitive epistemology and abduction studies. The second part deals with the relationship between social cognition and cognitive niche construction, i.e. the evolutionarily relevant externalization of knowledge onto the environment, while the third part focuses on what is commonly defined as “irrational”, thus being in a way dialectically opposed to the first part. Here, the author demonstrates that the “irrational” can be analyzed by applying the same epistemological approach used to study scientific rationality and social cognition; also in this case, we see the emergence of patterns of rationality that regulate the relationships between agents and their environment. All in all, the book offers a coherent and unitary account of human rationality, providing a basis for new conceptual connections and theoretical speculations

    No full text

In recent years there has been a substantial increase in research on heart rate variability (HRV), as an index of autonomic nervous system regulation. HRV-Biofeedback has been applied in a number of medical, psychiatric or health related conditions characterised by reduced HRV. This review provides a general overview of HRV psychophysiology, methods of measurement and the principal applications of HRV-Biofeedback. Data support the clinical efficacy of the treatment in several clinical conditions; however issues for mechanisms of effect should be seriously considered in order to advance our understanding of mechanisms underlying HRV-Biofeedback. Further research should be supported and encouraged in order to strengthen the evidence for the efficacy of such a promising psychophysiological treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR

Populism and the Effects of Political Attacks on Male and Female Candidates

    No full text
Previous research has shown that populism is associated with increased negativity and reliance on simplistic heuristic criteria in evaluating political information. such as gender stereotypes,. In a simulated scenario, we presented participants with a description of a fictional male (versus female) candidate and later exposed them to a political attack against the candidate. We then examined whether the effect of the attack varied depending on participants’ populism, the gender of the candidate attacked, and the attack’s focus on morality or competence, controlling for participants’ sexism and political orientation. The results showed that participants with high (versus low) levels of populism rated gave, in general, more negative evaluations of the candidate after the attack. Furthermore, participants with high levels of populism rated the female candidate lower after an attack on morality than after an attack on competence, while the opposite was true for the male candidate. The discussion focuses on how populists refer to the violation of stereotypical norms when evaluating negative information about political candidates

    Christ, Batman, and Girard

The aim of this article is to offer a non-trivial reflection about the violence embedded in self- sacrifice. Firstly, we will suggest a definition of violence which does not make self-sacrifice necessarily violent, but rather aims at being consistent with the common sense conception of sacrifice as actually violent (if self-sacrifice was not violent, then it would not be perceived as something rare and everyone would be committing non-trivial self-sacrifices wherever we laid our gaze). Framing this initial claim within the vectorial conception of sacrifice offered by Derrida (and exemplified by de Vries), we will individuate in the violence against intellect (sacrificium intellectus) the core of the violent dimension of self-sacrifice, insofar as the author of the sacrifice does not limitedly commit part of her understanding in the sacrificial practice, but all of it, since she is both the agent and the patient of sacrifice. At this point, we will have gathered enough material to spell out two fundamental violent aspects of self-sacrifice. The first concerns the exemplar of self-sacrifice in Western tradition, that is, Jesus Christ’s. The self-sacrifice committed by God’s own lógos is the epitome of sacrifice as sacrificium intellectus, therefore the highest gradient of intellectual violence. At the same time, this is crucial as it further corroborates the interpretation of Jesus’ sacrifice as the last sacrifice: no mimetic attempt to reenact His sacrifice can hold the comparison under the fundamental aspect of intellectual violence. The second “mirror” to reflect about the violence of self- sacrifice will concern the sacrifice enacted by superheroes, namely Batman, and the extent to which the sacrifice of intellect is at play when kenotic self-sacrifice and scapegoating processes become hard to tell one from the other (i.e. when the hero’s commitment seems to reverberate internally with external blame)

Beyond and Behind Platforms and Algorithms: Exploring the Lived Experiences of Gig Workers

    No full text
While the literature on gig work is expanding rapidly, many are the issues that need to be answered in order to fully understand the lived experiences of gig workers and illuminate the dynamics of gig work. Despite it is widely recognized that gig workers constitute an heterogenous workforce, for instance, seminal works have focused on finding similarities among gig workers across platforms, while the mechanisms behind different gig workers’ behaviors and perceptions are still widely obscure. Moreover, most of the literature focuses on what gig workers do individually on platforms, but not – or only cursorily – on how these workers manage the interplay between their online and offline activities. Specifically, comprehending how the online dimensions of work blur or integrate with offline aspects of gig workers’ lives – such as family condition or family needs, the presence of alternative, offline jobs, the cultural context of the community and country of origin – is of significant importance. This symposium addresses these issues by examining what happens behind and beyond platforms, and by presenting four papers looking at different gig workers’ experiences and different forms of interplay between online and offline aspects of gig work. Interferenze digitali.

    No full text
