Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Impact de la pandémie de COVID sur les maladies communes surveillées en population générale
No full textAfter the discovery of the first case of COVID-19 in France on January 24, 2020, the epidemic quickly spread. In order to contain the spread of the virus in the country, various social distancing measures were implemented to limit its dissemination. This began with a strict lockdown from March 17, 2020, until May 11, 2020, followed by additional measures which varied in their level of restriction depending on the level of virus transmission within the population. Conceptually, all the measures implemented aimed to limit contact among the population. Therefore, the impact of these measures is not limited to the circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus but could have an effect on all contagious diseases. Hence, we have focused here on the effects of social distancing measures on the circulation of other infectious diseases in France during this period. In an initial study, we examined the incidence of influenza viruses, acute diarrheal diseases, chickenpox, and bronchiolitis since the beginning of the pandemic in comparison to previous years. We utilized various data sources, including the general practitioners of the Sentinelles network, the general practitioners of the IQVIA network, pharmacy sales data from the IQVIA network, and Google searches. For each of these data series, a periodic regression analysis during the pre-epidemic period allowed us to estimate an expected level that we could compare to the observed data during the pandemic. We found a decrease in the circulation of all these syndromes following the health measures implemented to combat COVID-19, with the intensity reflecting the strength of the measures. In a second study, we investigated the circulation of parasites such as lice and scabies using medication sales data from the IQVIA pharmacy network. We identified a decrease in sales of medications associated with the treatment of these various parasites, with a pattern reflecting the different phases of the measures. In conclusion, the effects of the measures adopted for COVID-19 had an impact on the circulation of numerous infectious diseases. The profile of acquired immunity in the population has been affected and may influence the epidemiological dynamics in the years to come.Après la découverte du premier cas de COVID-19 en France, le 24 janvier 2020, l’épidémie s’est rapidement propagée. Afin de contenir la propagation du virus dans le pays, différentes mesures de distanciation sociale ont été mises en place pour limiter la dissémination, à commencer par un confinement strict du 17 mars 2020 jusqu’au 11 mai 2020, puis d’autres mesures au cours de la pandémie, plus ou moins restrictives, selon les niveaux de circulation du virus au sein de la population. Conceptuellement, toutes les mesures mises en place ont pour but de limiter les contacts dans la population. L’impact de ces mesures n’est donc pas limité à la circulation du virus SAS-CoV-2, mais pourrait avoir un effet sur toutes les maladies contagieuses. Nous nous sommes donc intéressés ici aux effets des mesures de distanciation sociale sur la circulation d’autres maladies infectieuses en France au cours de cette période. Dans un premier travail, nous avons étudié l’incidence des virus grippaux, des diarrhées aiguës, de la varicelle et des bronchiolites depuis le début de la pandémie en regard des années passées. Nous avons utilisé différentes sources de données : les médecins généralistes du réseau Sentinelles, les médecins généralistes du réseau IQVIA, les ventes des pharmacies du réseau IQVIA et les requêtes Google. Pour chacune de ces séries une régression périodique sur la période pré-épidémique nous a permis d’estimer un niveau attendu que nous avons pu comparer aux données observées pendant la pandémie. Nous avons alors constaté une baisse de la circulation de l’ensemble de ces syndromes suite aux mesures sanitaires engagées dans la lutte contre le COVID-19, avec une intensité reflétant la force des mesures. Dans un second travail, nous avons étudié la circulation de parasites tels que les poux et la gale à partir des données de ventes de médicaments du réseau de pharmacie IQVIA. Nous avons mis en évidence une baisse des ventes des médicaments associés aux traitements de ces différents parasites, avec un motif reflétant les différentes phases des mesures. En conclusion, l’effet des mesures adoptées pour le COVID-19 a eu un impact sur la circulation de nombreuses maladies infectieuses. Le profil d’immunité acquise dans la population a été affecté et pourrait retentir sur les dynamiques épidémiques dans les années à venir
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
