America vs. Apple: the Argumentative Function of Metonyms

    No full text
Conference Papers and Commentary. Our study of public argumentation surrounding iPhone encryption addresses the argumentative function of the metonym. Metonyms accomplish general and specific argumentative purposes. Generally, metonyms help define and redefine the argumentative framework for a dispute. Within a controversy, metonyms operate as inference generators. We isolate and analyze several metonyms and elaborate their warrant-generating valences. Metonyms are inference generating tools capable of instantiating normative frameworks, invoking flexible and indeterminate senses of causality

Categorizing Visual Argumentation Processes: Visual commonplaces in civic culture

Conference Papers and Commentary. This essay argues that a theoretical framework for understanding visual argumentation should ideally account for the “etymology,” “syntax,” and “field” of visual arguments and offers an elaboration of these concepts. It defends the notion of a visual argument’s “etymology” or historical sense and advocates inquiry that accounts for how the reception of particular images has been conditioned by the production of prior visual arguments

The article is a brief review of some of the best known illustrators of children’s books in Scandinavia (mostly Sweden, Denmark and Norway). The text begins with Elsa Beskow and her Peter in Blueberry Land, known in Poland since the beginning of the 20th century. John Bauer and Theodor Kittelsen – widely recognised for their artistic visions of old legends and trolls – are discussed as well as some of the famous illustrators of Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy tales (Vilhelm Pedersen, Kay Nielsen – with his Beardsley-like graphic works, Svend Otto S.) and Astrid Lindgren’s stories (Ingrid Vang Nyman, Ilon Wikland, Björn Berg). Obviously, a part of the article is devoted to the creator of the title characters of Moomintrolls, namely Tove Jansson. The author describes as also her less known designs to Carroll and Tolkien’s classics. Moreover, the attention is also focused on contemporary illustration in Sweden (Pija Lindenbaum, Eva Eriksson, AnnaClara Tidholm, Sven Nordquist among others) and in Norway (Svein Nyhus, Stian Hole)

The object of the research of the present dissertation is discourse strategies of the memoirs published in the independent Lithuania and their relation to the processes of the memory (re)construction. It is demonstrated how on the basis of the analysis of the Lithuanians’ memories different discourse strategies show up while (re)constructing individual-autobiographical and collective-historical memory in the memoir narrations, which are dependent on the author’s intentions, the narrator’s subjectivity, particularities of the individual speech expression and the nature of inter-subjective relations created. The memoir genre itself presuppose two possible (at the first glimpse) oppositional trends of memoirism studies: the analysis of the narration content, which is efficient while employing memoir texts as an information resource, and the analysis of the narration form or discourse. The dissertation strives towards the synthesis of the said approaches, i.e. the analysis of the narration form (discourse) is linked to the narration content (memory). Memoirs as specific narrations are analyzed from the theoretical perspective of narratologists Gerard Genett and Mieke Bal. While interpreting particular pieces of work and analysing the relation between the narrator (author) and acting subject, the main research aspect angle from the point of view of methodology is supplemented by the works of Ilon Fraiman, Yuri Lotman, Mikhail Bakhtin, Paul Ricoeur. To interpret the motives of memory, nostalgia theoretical insights and conceptions of Jӧrn Rüsen and Svetlana Boym have been invoked

The thesis examines the creative and rehearsal process of the author’s artistic thesis called ”One-woman musical show”. The process also included rehearsals with an artistic director, a sound technician, the band and a light technician. The author of this thesis created her own musical based on existing musical melodies. The musical tells the story of Maria who encounters various adversities in life. The line-up of the musical included a band of four as well as a sound and a light technician and the performance took place in Kuopio at Sotku Theater on 31.10.2019. The theoretical part of this thesis examines the history and evolution of the musical genre. It also explains the different techniques used for singing, acting and dancing in musicals. The goal of the student was to learn more about musical singing and acting and be credible in both. The purpose of using adversity in life as a topic was to make the audience reflect on how they deal with and react to difficulties in life and whether they are able to rejoice in times of happiness. In the last section the author reflects on the successes and failures of the creative and rehearsal process from her own continued learning and evolving point of view
