The present work is focused on the rationalization of the excitation transfer mechanism in polyphenylene ethynylenes (PPEs). A static study was performed using TDDFT, allowing to confirm both the localization of the excited states of meta-PPEs on para building blocks and the hierarchy in the interactions governing the photochemical properties of PPEs. Conical intersections were identified, along with few components of their branching spaces. Studying those supported the assumption of an energy transfer proceeding through internal conversion between excited states localized on different building blocks. In addition, we proposed a multiscale vibronic model for the energy of the eletronic states. In particular, we expressed the energies of the frontier orbitals of PPEs in terms of the energies of the frontier orbitals of benzene and acetylene, using an effective Hückel-type Hamiltonian. Perfoming different optimizations, we achieved to propose an expression for the energy of the electronic transition in terms of a reduced number of local nuclear coordinates

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

They are in the spotlight because they show excellent photostability and high excitation energy transfer efficiency. The excitation energy transfer in phenylene-ethynylene dendrimers is ultrafast and unidirectional. It occurs from the periphery of the molecular system to the core thanks to an excitation energy gradient that extends along the system.During this PhD, phenylene-ethynylene dendrimers have been studied through a pseudofragmentation scheme in which the phenylene-ethynylene dendrimers is decomposed in various subsystems (pseudofragments). The phenylene-ethynylene dendrimers behaves as if the pseudofragments (oligophenylene-ethynylene) were weakly interacting together. Two isomers (the single-trans isomer and the cumulenic isomer) of oligophenylene-ethynylene co-exist in their first adiabatic electronic excited states. Two diabatic excited states are then considered for each oligophenylene-ethynylene, the ones which are associated to the Lewis structures of the isomers. The potential energy surfaces of phenylene-ethynylene dendrimers and their conical intersections have been rationalised in terms of diabatic states localised on the pseudoframgments.I have used density-based descriptors that are built from the attachment and detachment densities involved in the electronic transitions. Such descriptors are used to characterise the electronic excited states that are involved in the pseudofragmentation scheme of phenylene-ethynylene dendrimers .This global strategy allowed us to suggest an alternative excitation energy transfer mechanism that involves both trans-bending and cumulenic-streching deformations on each of the pseudofragments of a phenylene-ethynylene dendrimers

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Quantum non-adiabatic simulations of a molecular photoswitch to a experimental-theoretical collaboration

This thesis adresses the study and control of the photo-reactivity of molecular switches, here the photo-isomerisation of spiropyrans. This theoretical work has been achieved in close collaboration with the experimental team PFL within the ICB in Dijon. Non-adiabatic quantum dynamics simulations were carried out so as to reproduce and rationalise the experimental results from time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. Such experiments have demonstrated ultra-fast photo-reactivity (~ 100 fs) following excitation by an ultra-short LASER pulse. It is interpreted as an internal conversion mechanism between the first singlet excited eletronic state and the ground state via a conical intersection. The theoretical study used the ring-opening reaction of benzopyran as a model. Developments were made regarding: (1) The exploration of the reaction mechanism and the computation of potential energy surfaces with perturbative, post-CASSCF quantum chemistry methods (XMCQDPT2). This investigation showed that results changed significantly compared to those reported in the literature with lower-level calculations. (2) The generation of a diabatic Hamiltonian based on ab initio XMCQDPT2 data. Owing to the significant anharmonicity in the ground electronic state, we designed a new effective approach, quite different from the previous studies. (3) The production of non-adiabatic quantum dynamics simulations using the MCTDH method. The results thus obtained are in excellent agreement with the experimental ones. Including explicitly the LASER pulse allowed us to reproduce and rationalise the action of pulse shaping on control observed in experiments. The present work thus made possible the succesful implementation of a theoretical/experimental collaboration

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

    No full text
Light-harvesting (LH) molecular antennae are known for their ability to absorb light in the UV-visible domain via their chromophores and to transfer the associated excitation energy down to an energy trap within the system to be used for different purposes (photocatalysis, enhanced light emission…).In particular, the strong LH properties of poly(phenylene ethynylene) (PPE) dendrimers have been attributed to a unidirectional excitation-energy gradient along a molecular tree from the shortest branches (leaves: the chromophores) down to the longest branches (trunk: the energy trap). However, setting up a comprehensive atomistic simulation protocol of excitation-energy transfer (EET) in such π-conjugated macromolecules remains challenging to date, especially because of the large number of degrees freedom and the presence of many conical intersections responsible for nontrivial internal conversion among the manifold of electronic excited states. The architectures of both primary chromophores and further units for EET are all based on the same chemical groups (benzenes and acetylenes), only with different substitution schemes and lengths. In this thesis, we have carried out various theoretical chemistry studies (regarding structure and dynamics) on several PPE building blocks so as to rationalize the nature and efficiency of the ultrafast dynamics EET process via a nonadiabatic chemical perspective.First, we analyzed the properties of the electronic excited states for both isolated PPE-oligomers and the first generations of PPE-dendrimers using linear-response time-dependent density functional theory. After demonstrating the locally-excited character of electronic excited states, we explored their associated potential energy surfaces (PESs) and characterized their critical points (minima, transition states, and minimum-energy conical intersections). Some particular attention was given to the optimization and characterization of the conical intersections, especially as regards the branching-space vectors and their decompositions on the basis of the normal modes of vibration of the studied molecules. Together with these characterizations, we parametrized vibronic-coupling Hamiltonian models consistent with a so-called diabatization by ansatz of the coupled electronic excited states. From them, we could run wavepacket quantum dynamics simulations based on the multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) formalism so as to simulate EET from first principles. Our simulations confirmed the utmost importance of the acetylenic stretching modes for EET to occur. They also highlighted the relevance of the stretching and rock-bending quinoidal modes of the connecting nodes (twofold or threefold meta-substituted phenylenes) within the dendritic graph. Comparisons between symmetrical and asymmetrical units illustrated the role of the primary structure (symmetrical meta-substitution) of the chromophore for efficient light absorption and/or EET. In particular, we investigated the steady-state spectroscopy of the PPE-chromophore itself, and its unusual emission spectrum observed experimentally. Here, we faced the case of strongly nonadiabatically coupled electronic excited states in the Franck-Condon region, for which the Born-Oppenheimer approximation breaks down. We calculated the vibronic eigenstates in the excited-state manifold, having contributions within two bright electronic excited states, and evaluated the contributions to both absorption and emission spectra. The results of our modelling suggest that the observed emissive contribution is the one that has gone through a transfer from one electronic state to another. Finally, we explored bottom-up approaches for modelling the coupled PESs of larger PPE-dendrimer units and simulating the EET process occuring through them. Our strategy made use of the knowledge of the isolated branches and of how their communication can be viewed as a weak coupling from one branch to another

    No full text
This thesis focuses on the modeling of the structural, aromatic, and spectroscopic properties of a new class of macrocycles alternative to porphyrins, i.e., azacalixphyrins (ACPs). These conjugated macrocycles have first been synthesized and characterized in 2010 by Siri’s group in Marseille and revealed exceptional features (structure, NIR absorption, tautomerism, and complexation). This thesis aimed at using ab initio methods to propose new ACP derivatives with improved properties with a focus on their absorption. The Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time- Dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods have been predominantly applied, although alternative wavefunction-based theories [the second-order Coupled-Cluster, CC2, and the Algebraic Diagrammatic Construction, ADC(2)] as well as the Bethe-Salpeter formalism, BSE/evGW, have also been used. Three major directions to develop new ACP derivatives have been investigated: (i) the extension of the ACP -conjugation path by fusing several ACP moieties leading to multimers; (ii) chemical modifications of the ACP unit by addition of electroactive groups; and (iii) coupling of the ACP moiety with a fluorophore presenting a complementary absorption spectrum in order to improve the light harvesting and to trigger excitation energy transfer processes. The two former axes have been investigated in collaboration with Siri’s team whereas the latter has arisen from a collaboration with the Mennucci’s group

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
