Lars Rasmussen on inventing Google Maps

    No full text
Every now and then someone has a really good idea. And sometimes, an enormous corporation decides to support that idea, which occasionally leads to something pretty extraordinary being developed. So was the case with Google Maps, the now ubiquitous online navigation system. It was created by brothers Lars and Jens Rasmussen at a time when the technology required to deliver their idea was still being developed. But with Google\u27s support, they built an extraordinary website. Delivering the annual Warren Centre Innovation Lecture, Lars Rasmussen gives a blow-by-blow account of the development of Google Maps, and his more recent project, Google Wave. A must-watch for aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere. Lars Rasmussen is the head of engineering at Google Maps Sydney. In 2003 Lars and his brother Jens formed a mapping technology company, Where 2 Technologies. A year later it was acquired by Google and Google Maps was born. He is also the co-inventor of social networking site Google Wave

In this paper the political framing in Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen’s speech at the opening of the Danish parliament will be examined. To accomplish the purpose of the study, classical and modern framing theory will be used to show the form, function and effects of the frames in concern. Main theories in the paper are George Lakoff and Robert Entman, while secondary theoretical works spand from Erving Goffman and Friedrich Nietzsche to Rune Sloothus, Jens Steen & Gry Reiter and Wayne Booth. The methodological approach is qualitative and mainly hermeneutical. The results show, that Lars Løkke Rasmussen’s use of framing in the speech picture the state of the country from an economical point of view. Via metaphorical and value-loaded frames he states the Danish economy as losing in a competition for economical growth compared to other nations. The solution he offers is pushing unemployed people into work by motivating them through the government’s economical reforms and regulations. In order to do that he frames work as morally correct, the reforms as an savings account and a common tax cuts and the governments economical regulations as necessary for the future survival of the Danish economy. Furthermore he positions himself as a prime minister by speaking to the broad Danish population. At the same time he conducts valuable political partnership with the business world and the worker- organisations by praising them and avoiding not offending them in his political points of view. As an end point Lars Løkke Rasmussen frames in a democratic constructive way as his framing brings his political points and values out in the open, but also at certain times manipulates and camouflages the actual political act in the government’s package of economical reforms

Cost Effectiveness of Treatments for Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation: Focus on the Novel Oral Anticoagulants

    No full text
For more than 5 decades, the only available treatment for the prevention of atrial fibrillation (AF)-related stroke were the vitamin K antagonists. Recently, novel oral anticoagulants (NOAC) have been approved for the prevention of AF-related stroke. In the present article, the cost effectiveness of AF-related stroke-prevention strategies is reviewed. The emphasis on NOACs aims to provide an overview of their impact on health economics based on the published cost-effectiveness analyses. The available evidence suggests that the balance from the efficacy and safety point of view makes the treatment with the NOACs a cost-effective alternative to warfarin. Thus, the NOACs offer efficacy, safety and convenience, as well as cost effectiveness, for stroke prevention in AF. © 2013 Springer International Publishing Switzerland
