Dr. Yvonne Howell – Faculty Author Interview
Dr. Yvonne Howell, Professor of Russian and International Studies, discusses her edited collection, Red Star Tales : A Century of Russian and Soviet Science Fiction, published recently by Russian Life Books. Red Star Tales brings together 18 Russian science fiction works, translated into English for the first time, spanning from path-breaking, pre-revolutionary works of the 1890s, through the difficult Stalinist era, to post-Soviet stories published in the 1980s and 1990s
Anatomy of Invention
BYU Studies has a long history of publishing the annual lecture given by the recipient of the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award, BYU’s highest faculty honor. It is with great pleasure that BYU Studies Quarterly publishes this year’s lecture by Dr. Larry L. Howell, a professor of mechanical engineering. His speech was delivered as a forum address on May 17, 2016, at Brigham Young University

Introduction: The Politics of Resilience and Recovery in Mental Health Care
The articles included in this special issue engage these themes across a number of national settings, institutional spaces, and empirical sites, from universities to mental health commissions, to national policy in an international context. They focus, especially, on Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom, where recent and significant changes in mental health governance have relied heavily on the notions of recovery and resilience, often to questionable effect. They deal, as we have said, with some of the most central themes in social justice studies. As a collection, the articles help us think through some of the pressing political questions about social justice that have arisen with the adoption of the mantras of resilience and recovery in mental health governance
Negotiating the Culture of Resistance: A Critical Assessment of Protest Politics
Both for those within the movement and the public at large, the anti-globalization movement has become increasingly defined by large-scale protests such as those opposing the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) in Quebec City. Such events successfully render visible the strength of the movement, expose an emerging global elite, politicize neoliberal restructuring, and capture the media and public's attention. Yet the privileging of large-scale protest for advancing anti-globalist politics is increasingly being questioned both by those involved in the movement and by the Left in general.Peer reviewe
On the modeling of a contact-aided cross-axis flexural pivot
This paper reports the study of a planar Cross-Axis Flexural Pivot (CAFP) comprising an additional contact pair. The proposed device may be useful for applications requiring a revolute joint that behaves differently when deflecting clockwise/anti-clockwise. The presence of the contact pair reduces the free length of one flexures, resulting in a considerable increment of the overall joint stiffness. The pivot behaviour is investigated, for different load cases, via the Chained-Beam-Constraint Model (CBCM), namely an accurate method to be applied in large deflection problems. A framework comprising Matlab and ANSYS is developed for testing the CAFP performances in terms of rotational stiffness, parasitic shift and maximum stress, with different combinations of geometrical aspect ratios and contact extensions. Results achieved via CBCM for a pure rotation applied to the CAFP's output link are then verified through Finite Element Analysis. The resulting performance maps show good agreement between the numerical results. Furthermore, the CBCM shows an improved computational efficiency, which is a crucial aspect for preliminary design steps. At last, direct comparison between simulations and experiments, developed by means of two custom test rigs, confirms the efficacy of the proposed design method for the modeling of contacts in large deflection problems

Howell\u27s Prairie...A TNT Legacy
In 1940, the U. S. Government acquired approximately 18,000 acres of land, known as Howell\u27s Prairie, located in St. Charles County, Missouri. Before the ink dried on the purchase contracts and before the government made payment for the land, construction on a TNT/DNT (explosives) plant began. This 35 minute documentary tells about the history of the area, the story behind the acquisition of the property and the impact of the acquisition on the former land owners and residents.
The history of Howell\u27s Prairie from the early 1800s through 1940 is an important part of the land acquisition story. The roots of the early settlers such as Boone, Stewart and Howell run deep and local historians tell about the impact of early settlements on Missouri and the United States. Therefore, when the government tried to purchase the land for the construction of a TNT /DNT plant, local opposition was strong.
The acquisition of the land proved to be difficult, long and controversial. Even though the landowners eventually signed contracts to sell their land, the government stopped payment half way through the purchasing process. Lengthy court battles began with court cases eventually making their way to the Supreme Court. The delay in payment, brought on by lengthy court battles, exceeded the length of the World War II and caused great hardship for many of the land owners. Thus, the program explores the actions taken by the government, the reasons behind their actions and the impact on the landowners.
Throughout the documentary, personal interviews are used to help us understand the story behind Howell\u27s Prairie and the construction of the Weldon Spring Ordnance Works
