Using C-LARA to evaluate GPT-4's multilingual processing∗
No full textWe present a cross-linguistic study in which the open source C-LARA platform was used to evaluate GPT-4’s ability to perform several key tasks relevant to Computer Assisted Language Learning. For each of the languages English, Farsi, Faroese, Mandarin and Russian, we instructed GPT-4, through C-LARA, to write six different texts, using prompts chosen to obtain texts of widely differing character. We then further instructed GPT-4 to annotate each text with segmentation markup, glosses and lemma/part-of-speech information; native speakers hand-corrected the texts and annotations to obtain error rates on the different component tasks. The C-LARA platform makes it easy to combine the results into a single multimodal document, further facilitating checking of their correctness. GPT-4’s performance varied widely across languages and processing tasks, but performance on different text genres was roughly comparable. In some cases, most notably glossing of English text, we found that GPT-4 was consistently able to revise its annotations to improve them

No full text"Del 31 de marzo al 9 de abril de 1985 se realizó un crucero oceanográficoa bordo del B/O El Puma en la parte central del Golfo de California. Se efectuaron 19 lances hidrográficos a 0, 25, SO, 75 y 100 m en cuatro transectos, para estimar la biomasa fitoplanctónica (concentración de clorofila a) por fracciones de tamaño (nanofitoplancton y microfitoplancton). En cinco estaciones se realizaron experimentos para estimar la productividad primaria del fitoplancton por fracciones de tamaño utilizando el método del 1%. El patrón de distribución de los datos obtenidos indica que durante el periodo de muestreo se desarrollaba un frente térmico, con características similares a las observadas en estudios efectuados en esta misma región. La contribución del nanofitoplancton fue dominante en la mayoría de las estaciones, aunque los máximos de clorofila a y productividad primaria se presentaron cerca de la costa, donde dominó el microfitoplancton. Los valores más altos de las razones de asimilación (P/B) correspondierona las estaciones donde el nanofitoplancton presentó los porcentajes más altos, lo cual indica que durante este periodo, el nanofitoplancton tuvo mayor eficiencia de producción. Los valores de productividad primaria y razones de asimilación fueron menores a los de marzo de 1983 y 1984, cuando el golfo estaba bajo la influencia del evento de El Niño, pero similares a los de épocas normales.""An oceanographic cruise was performed in the central region of the Gulf of California from March 31 to April 9, 1985. Nineteen hydrographic casts to 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 m were made in four transects to estimate the size-fractionated biomass of the phytoplankton (chlorophyll a). Five size-fractionated 1%~ assimilation experiments were also done. A thermal front was recorded during the cruise period, with similar characteristics to those previously reported for this area. The contribution of nannoplankton to the biomass was higher at most stations, although maximum values of chlorophyll a and primary productivity were found near the coast, where the abundance of microphytoplankton was higher. Tl-te higher values of the assimilation ratios corresponded to the stations with the higher nannoplankton percentage, indicating higher efficiency in their production rates. The assimilation ratios and primary productivity rates were lower than those reported in March of 1983 and 1984, when Gulf waters were under the influente of the El Niño event, but of the same order of magnitude as during normal years.

No full textLa presente investigaci\uf3n de car\ue1cter descriptiva con dise\uf1o de campo, tuvo como prop\uf3sito diagnosticar la conducta tributaria y su incidencia en el cumplimiento de las obligaciones del empresario afiliado a la c\ue1mara de industriales del Estado Lara, con lo cual se pretende determinar los rasgos que infieren en la conducta tributaria. la muestra estuvo conformada por 33 empresas inscritas a la c\ue1mara de industriales del Estado Lara (C.I.E.L), y ubicadas en las zonas industriales I y II del Estado Lara. para obtener informaci\uf3n se dise\uf1o un instrumento de investigaci\uf3n consistente en una entrevista. para el an\ue1lisis de los datos se hizo uso de m\ue9todos de estad\uedstica descriptiva y porcentajes. Se pudo determinar finalmente entre otros aspectos que: a) los empresarios afiliados a la c\ue1mara de industriales del Estado Lara (C.I.E.L) poseen una conducta tributaria incumplidora respecto a sus obligaciones. b) los empresarios afiliados a la c\ue1mara de industriales del Estado Lara (C.I.E.L) no llevan un control en sus obligaciones. c) la administraci\uf3n tributaria es deficiente en cuanto al suministro de la asesor\ueda adecuada y oportuna para conocimiento de los contribuyentes
Creating Multimedia Resources for Kanak Languages Using the C-LARA Platform: Case Studies in Iaai and Drehu
No full textInternational audienceWe describe an ongoing project where a diverse team, including linguists, ethnomusicologists, applied linguists, language teachers, and computer scientists, is developing multimedia resources for two Kanak languages of New Caledonia—Iaai and Drehu—using the ChatGPT-based Learning And Reading Assistant (C-LARA) platform. C-LARA (https://www.c-lara.org/; (Bédi et al., 2023, 2024)) is an open source platform powered by artificial intelligence (AI) enabling non-expert users to rapidly create illustrated multimodal content for language learners. We present initial proof-of-concept resources already completed and outline plans for further work.For Drehu, the language of the island of Lifou and one of the languages of Tiga, and the Kanak language with the largest community of speakers (approx. 16,000), we developed an interactive alphabet book and a C-LARA edition of Leu me Jö (The (North) Wind and the Sun), a Drehu version of Aesop’s fable. These resources feature Drehu words with accompanying AI-generated images and audio pronunciations recorded by native speakers. The platform provides phonetic annotations using pronunciation respellings based on French orthography (franétique transcriptions, derived from français + phonétique), aiding learners in correct pronunciation and mitigating cross-language orthographic conflicts (see Figure 1). The grapheme-phoneme correspondences were based on the conventions of the Académie des Langues Kanak’s Proposition d’Écriture for Drehu (Sam, 2009) as well as our own research (Anonymous).In Iaai, spoken by around 3,700 speakers mainly on the island of Ouvéa, we created a multimedia version of Wanakat Kaori, a bilingual Iaai-French tale (see Figure 2) adapted from traditional oral literature (Hombouy et al., 2005), as well as several children’s songs, lullabies, and contemporary music pieces. For Wanakat Kaori, we used illustrations from the original storybook, while AI-generated images were created for the other texts. All resources include audio recordings by native speakers. We collaborated closely with the Académie des Langues Kanak (ALK) to ensure adherence to Iaai writing norms (2020) and cultural appropriateness.One challenge was addressing limitations in using AI to create images depicting specific cultural contexts, which we mitigated through prompt engineering and community feedback. Here, the involvement of the ALK and community members was pivotal in refining the resources, ensuring they were culturally relevant and accurately represented the languages. Another challenge was adapting C-LARA to work with Indigenous languages unfamiliar to the AI. Since then, we have enhanced the platform to better handle these challenges by improving the platform’s ability to support manual annotation and glossing in unfamiliar languages and refining the AI-based image generation techniques.Our work demonstrates the potential of AI in supporting linguistic documentation and education for endangered languages. By combining advanced technology with community collaboration, we contribute to the preservation and promotion of Kanak languages, showing how AI tools can be adapted to create culturally relevant multimedia resources for languages with limited digital presence. All materials described are freely accessible online; the final version of this abstract will include links. No full textEl presente estudio fue de tipo descriptivo longitudinal retrospectivo, tuvo por objetivo analizar la tendencia de la Mortalidad Infantil en el Estado Lara y sus Municipios. Considerando que las necesidades sociales son expresi\uf3n del d\ue9ficit en la garant\ueda de los derechos consagrados en la Constituci\uf3n de la Rep\ufablica Bolivariana de Venezuela, se hizo necesario realizar este estudio aplicando la metodolog\ueda de Identificaci\uf3n y Representaci\uf3n de Necesidades Sociales, basado en herramientas cuantitativas permitiendo proponer medidas de intervenci\uf3n. Al analizar la Mortalidad Infantil en el Estado Lara en los a\uf1os 2001-2010 se observa una tendencia a la disminuci\uf3n, por otro lado al analizar sus respectivos componentes se ve que la Tasa de Mortalidad Infantil est\ue1 a 'expensas de la Mortalidad Neonatal con una diferencia muy marcada con respecto a la Mortalidad Post-neonatal. Se observa diferencias importantes entre los mismos durante el periodo estudiado observando que en el transcurso de los diez a\uf1os estudiados hay una tendencia franca a la disminuci\uf3n en los nueve Municipios Sanitarios. Al realizar la comparaci\uf3n de las cinco principales causas de Mortalidad Infantil en los a\uf1os 2001 y 2010, se puede observar una clara disminuci\uf3n en todas las observadas con un cambio porcentual muy evidente, producto de la disminuci\uf3n de la Mortalidad Infantil en el Estado Lara y sus Municipios. Se realiz\uf3 el c\ue1lculo del \uedndice de Gini con la Curva de Lorenz observ\ue1ndose que el \uedndice de Gini es de 0,28 para el a\uf1o 2001 y para el a\uf1o 2010 es de 0,40. Se realiz\uf3 una evaluaci\uf3n del Sistema de Vigilancia Epidemiol\uf3gica, cotejando los datos que se reportan semanalmente con los Certificados de Defunci\uf3n observ\ue1ndose una m\uednima diferencia en el n\ufamero de defunciones
