    Get PDF
Over the last few years, Italian LIS field has produced more papers about Bibliometrics than before. This increasing attention is probably due to the research assessment exercises that have influenced Italian academic debate. Role of librarians, research assessment in the Humanities and Social Sciences, databases coverage and data quality, new metrics, awareness of the use of indicators: aim of this article is to show main topics through a literature review of the Italian LIS studies within the years 2010-2015, in order to offer an up-to-date outline of the situation

Research assessment is a hot topic in academic debate, as in the immediate future research will become more and more dependent on assessment procedures – i.e. peer review process (qualitative method) and bibliometrics (quantitative method) – for the allocation of public funds. Since bibliometric indicators have been originally developed for hard sciences, they don't fit for humanities. Therefore librarians should rediscover their bibliometric skills – originally developed within libraries – to support the profession. The article insists on the connection between library science and bibliometrics, and on the role that librarians could play in research assessment: seen in this light, bibliometrics is an opportunity to lead the profession beyond the boundary of the traditional library services

SpinBook Project : crossing innovation boundaries through social interaction

In the last twenty years, scholarly research has extended its boundaries in order to reply to the increasing complexity of our society. Traditional scientific sectors and their research practices have become unsuitable especially for the production of new knowledge. In particular, the new knowledge creation is taking place also outside academic institutions (Nowotny, Scott & Gibbons, 2001), that have to enhance their relationship with Society: they are called to transfer their skills, competencies and research results to external actors in order to maximize their outcomes (European Commission, 2007). These processes are not unidirectional, but they are characterized by multidirectional interactions and try to match supply with demand. Many categories of actors are involved in research transfer activities, first of all researchers with their ideas, results or need for new research funds. Research institutions have to adapt themselves to new global, European or national research policies (e.g. societal impact assessment). Companies and private sector need new ideas and opportunities in order to overcome recession. Governments want to assess their investment in order to account for their policies. Various actors imply various needs, a heterogeneous system that needs to be coordinated. Until now, main channels for research results transfer have been the traditional patents databases, usually run by Intellectual Property Offices. These tools have some limits, especially their static structure that does not take advantage of potentialities of Web. Therefore, new instruments and environments for knowledge transmission are necessary: social media could answer to these requirements. Because of their features, scholarly community has increasingly employed social media in order to communicate their results in a better and faster way (Bik & Goldstein, 2013). Furthermore, studies about new metrics based on social media (Priem, Piwowar & Hemminger, 2012; Peters, Chen, Kaplan, Ognibeni & Pauwels, 2013) are developing. These existing tools are very useful for scholarly communication growth, but they might not be so useful for the interaction between science and industry. They are too much ‘generalist’ and, most of all, are plenty of information noise. Moreover, some of them focus on traditional research outputs, instead of research outcomes (e.g. Academia.edu or ResearchGate ). For this reason, a new social media focused on innovation and knowledge transfer could increase the communication between various actors of the whole innovation system. SpinBook, currently in beta version, is a new tool set up by IRCrES (Research Institute on Sustainable Economic Growth) within the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences and Cultural Heritage of the National Research Council of Italy. It considers all types of actors involved in the innovation process, from researchers to companies, each one with a specific user profile. It is based on a solid data quality control and on a careful validation of users' profiles. Another important feature is the hour-by-hour updating of news about innovation topics. This project aims to set up a real network between the actors of the innovation process, giving them a suitable visibility and also giving a boost to new ideas and projects

Bibliometrics and ‘core journals’ in the Humanities: an Italian case study

    Get PDF
This paper analyses possible transformations in the publication behaviour of Italian humanistic researchers as a results of national research assessment exercises (VQR 2004-2010) and national habilitation exams for academic career (ASN 2012 and 2013). Case study is the humanists‟ community of Sapienza University of Rome, a representative sample of Italian context. In particular, this paper examines the use of scientific journals in the last ten years (2004-2014), before and after introduction of a journal rating system. Aim of this research is to verify, through experiment with Sapienza institutional database, if the number of journals selected as outputs by this scholarly community have been changed over the years, producing a more restricted set of “core” journals with a greater scientific strength

    No full text
Scholarly communication acknowledges scientific journal as a flexible and effective tool for sharing and dissemination of knowledge generated through research. In the hard sciences, journal has taken an authentic leadership over time and it has obtained registration, certification, awareness and archiving basic functions. Core journals of each discipline are indexed by Web of Science and Scopus, the largest international databases, and their articles have a worldwide visibility. In contrast, journal article in the Humanities is still considered a lesser form of publication. Furthermore, Humanities’ features are reflected over their editorial output, preventing their indexing in Web of Science and Scopus. Aim of this article is to verify and measure Humanities Italian journals presence in Web of Science and Scopus, updating a previous work (Capaccioni & Spina, 2012) and focusing only on the Humanities, excluding social sciences

The social impact assessment in social sciences and humanities: methodological issues from the Italian experience

    No full text
In the knowledge economy the evaluation of research institutions is an important element, in particular with respect to universities. Recently attention has been focused not only on the quality of research outputs (i.e. publications) but also on its external impact, i.e., the overall interaction between university and society. While the notion of impact is accepted and recognised in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, it is a source of much controversy in Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH). Literature about research impact has often focused on technology transfer processes, marginalising social impact in favour of a strictly economic one. Therefore, this situation has probably distanced SSH from a serious reflection on these topics and on their role in so-called third mission of the university. Moving from the current Italian experience of third mission assessment, the chapter surveys these developments and offers a number of suggestions for an assessment of SSH associated with a higher level of awareness of their impact within the policies of universities’ performances assessment. The comparison with the British assessment exercise of Research Excellence Framework could offer a significant source of reflection regarding choices associated with an evaluation process
