Self-destructive dynamics in large-scale technochange and some ways of counteracting it
No full textPurpose - Seeks to raise the question of why large-scale technochange is difficult and often failure-prone and to attempt to answer this question by viewing technochange as an instance of institutional change and design in which self-destructive mechanisms are inherently embedded. Design/methodology/approach - In order to explore the complex institutional dynamics of large-scale technochange the paper uses the exploration/exploitation framework originally developed by March and extended by Lanzara to the study of institution-building processes in the political domain. The argument is that problems in implementing large-scale technochange stem from learning dilemmas in the inter-temporal and inter-group allocation of material and cognitive resources. The paper uses a case of large-scale technology in a major US university system to illustrate the institutional perspective on technochange. Findings - It is argued and illustrated that the development and redesign of large-scale information systems involve both the exploration of alternative institutional arrangements and the exploitation of pre-existing ones, such that a delicate balance must be struck to overcome incoherences and dilemmas between the two activities. Research limitations/implications - The proposed framework to understand large-scale technochange is not examined empirically. The illustration of the framework relies on a single large-scale system project of a non-profit organization in the USA. Further empirical work and comparative research on multiple cases are needed. Practical implications - The paper discusses some sources of the failures of large-scale technochange and offers three interrelated mechanisms to counteract such failure sources, namely focal points, increasing returns, and bricolage. These counteracting mechanisms may help organizations to effectively deal with the dilemmas of exploration and exploitation in technochange. Originality/value - This paper fills the gap in understanding the nature of large-scale technochange, providing an explanation of why it is difficult and failure-prone and offering some modest proposals for intervention in large-scale system projects

No full textLa presente invenzione ha per oggetto ulteriori innovazioni per quanto riguarda gli apparati di sostentazione e guida a levitazione magnetica, per sistemi di trasporto di massa (merci e/o persone) che operano anche ad altissime velocità di transito, i cui principi generali di funzionamento, già proposti nel 1990 dal brevetto di Giovanni Lanzara (U.S. Patent N° 4,979,445), si basano sul fenomeno conosciuto come effetto Meissner, tipico dei materiali superconduttori interagenti con campi magnetici applicati.
Il sistema di levitazione innovativo che si propone, consta di:
- Equipaggiamento, solidale alla via di corsa, composto da un binario con due guidovie parallele, costituite da travi in ferro, con sezione trasversale bilatera a forma di “V”, "L" o similare, con magneti permanenti che generano un campo magnetico statico;
- Equipaggiamento, posto al di sotto del pianale del veicolo in corrispondenza delle suddette guidovie, costituito da “pattini”, a sezione trasversale concava a forma di “V”, "L" o similare, con lastre superconduttive ad alta temperatura critica, allocate stabilmente in appositi contenitori criogenici, raffreddate con azoto liquido.
L’interazione tra il campo magnetico generato dalle guidovie, fisse a terra, ed i materiali superconduttori, posti a bordo del veicolo, produce, in corrispondenza di tutte le fasi del moto e per qualsiasi velocità di transito, forze di levitazione le cui componenti, verticali e trasversali, sono in grado rispettivamente di sollevare il veicolo, mantenerlo sospeso ad una certa distanza dal piano della via e di guidarlo lungo la stessa.
Il sistema di levitazione magnetica proposto è di tipo repulsivo, stabile, autoequilibrante e non produce resistenze magnetiche lungo la direzione longitudinale del mot
Self-activated morphing carbon fiber composites via cyclic internal stresses
No full textAn innovative concept to exploit self-activated morphing composite materials is presented and demonstrated experimentally. In this design, shape changes of a carbon fiber composite are achieved by combining two key ingredients: fibers orientation and temperature-sensitive epoxy resin. When the fibers are properly oriented in each layer, internal stresses can be induced or gradually released by hardening or softening, respectively, the hosting epoxy resin. The epoxy resin stiffness is controlled with the help of internal heaters (e.g. the carbon fibers as demonstrated in this paper). The proposed mechanism results in a large scale and cyclic shape-changing capability which, together with the corresponding tunable stiffness, represent the fundamental features of morphing structural materials

No full textL'articolo “Profili patrimoniali dell’unione civile”, muovendo dalla trasformazione del tradizionale concetto di famiglia che ha portato alla modifica dei valori, delle regole e dei modelli sociali di riferimento, affronta taluni aspetti della l. 20 maggio 2016, n. 76.
L’attenzione si attesta da subito sull’analisi del comma 20, regola centrale dell’intera materia, diretta a porre le basi dello statuto dei diritti e dei doveri conseguenti alla costituzione del vincolo dell’unione; il precipitato normativo, sancendo l’estensione delle disposizioni dettate per il matrimonio alle unioni civili, consente una vera e propria traslazione di disciplina da un istituto all’altro, dando luogo ad un nuovo regime giuridico comune ai due istituti del diritto di famiglia.
Attraverso l’approfondimento dei primi pronunciamenti del formante giurisprudenziale viene rilevato come il citato comma sia munito di un’efficacia etero-integratrice delle previsioni regolamentari originariamente pensate per il solo istituto del matrimonio, nel senso che tali norme devono ora intendersi estensibili e applicabili anche all’istituto delle unioni civili pur senza la necessità di un’apposita ed espressa modifica
