Common Rail Injector Modified to Achieve a Modulation of the Injection Rate

    No full text
ABSTRACT−Injection rate shape control is one feature of a diesel fuel injection system that is strongly desired at this time. In the conventional common rail system, it is difficult to control the injection rate since the fuel pressure is constant during the injection period, resulting in a nearly rectangular rate shape. In order to look into possible injection modulations, injectors equipped with standard and geometrically modified control valves were investigated in detail by means of computer modelling and simulation. Experiments were carried out to validate the feasibility of such a shaping. The results of this study show a noteworthy dependence of the fuel rate on geometrical modifications in the piloting stage of the injector

Lanzafame M. Is regional growth in Italy endogenous?, Regional Studies. This paper investigates the extent to which the natural rate of growth of the Italian regions is endogenous, in the sense that it is affected by actual growth. Using annual data for the period 1977-2003, mixed support is found for the endogeneity hypothesis. Furthermore, in line with recent findings in the literature, the analysis provides evidence of asymmetries in Okun's law when growth is endogenous. Investigation of Short Injections Using Standard and Modified Common Rail Injectors

    No full text
The control of the fuel to be introduced into the combustion chamber under idling and low-load conditions is known to be a problem in Diesel engines, owing to the relatively small fraction of the full-load fuel needed under light loads. Thus, particular attention should be paid to the behavior of the injector with reference to short injection events. This work presents the results of an experimental campaign carried out with two different types of common rail injectors, a standard injector and a modified one. The latter, coming from a simple modification realized in a standard injector, exhibits linear behavior between injected fuel and solenoid energizing time in the field of short injections. A direct comparison of the two injection behaviors suggests a possible way to better control short or pilot injections

Non solo Arte povera : riflessioni intorno alla Galleria L’Attico, tra Bruno e Fabio Sargentini

This paper was originally conceived as a speech for the conference Le mostre d’arte moderna nelle gallerie private in Italia. I due decenni cruciali 1960-1980 (Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore, December 9-10, 2021). The research is the result of a project aiming to collect and to analyze a wide range of exhibition catalogues relating to the art gallery L’Attico in Rome, which experienced a complex and prestigious history through the years. Founded by Bruno Sargentini in 1957, the gallery was then run by his son, Fabio Sargentini, who is still the owner at present. Bruno and Fabio’s contributions to the gallery are often considered in contrast, favoring an oppositional interpretation, even though a dialogue between their choices, a sort of connection between father and son despite an undeniable generation gap, diverse cultural backgrounds and artistic tastes, is sometimes possible (through a shared passion for Surrealism, for instance). Working with catalogues and other items produced by the gallery in almost three decades of activity represented a chance to shed light on some crucial points of its history and legacy, identifying trends, levels of changes and continuity starting from the artworks exposed and collected by the gallerists. In doing so, it has been possible to underline some common threads which connect the work of some young artists operating in Rome starting from 1966 to some older ones, generating an original collision and an international melting pot between tradition and innovation

Quantitative Trait Loci for CD4:CD8 Lymphocyte Ratio Are Associated with Risk of Type 1 Diabetes and HIV-1 Immune Control

Abnormal expansion or depletion of particular lymphocyte subsets is associated with clinical manifestations such as HIV progression to AIDS and autoimmune disease. We sought to identify genetic predictors of lymphocyte levels and reasoned that these may play a role in immune-related diseases. We tested 2.3 million variants for association with five lymphocyte subsets, measured in 2538 individuals from the general population, including CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, CD56+ natural killer (NK) cells, and the derived measure CD4:CD8 ratio. We identified two regions of strong association. The first was located in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), with multiple SNPs strongly associated with CD4:CD8 ratio (rs2524054, p = 2.1 x 10(-28)). The second region was centered within a cluster of genes from the Schlafen family and was associated with NK cell levels (rs1838149, p = 6.1 x 10(-14)). The MHC association with CD4:CD8 replicated convincingly (p = 1.4 x 10(-9)) in an independent panel of 988 individuals. Conditional analyses indicate that there are two major independent quantitative trait loci (QTL) in the MHC region that regulate CD4:CD8 ratio: one is located in the class I cluster and influences CD8 levels, whereas the second is located in the class II cluster and regulates CD4 levels. Jointly, both QTL explained 8% of the variance in CD4:CD8 ratio. The class I variants are also strongly associated with durable host control of HIV, and class II variants are associated with type-1 diabetes, suggesting that genetic variation at the MHC may predispose one to immune-related diseases partly through disregulation of T cell homeostasis

    «Il fantastico attraverso una presenza “critica”» : Jannis Kounellis, Boogie-Woogie, 1971

In 1971 Jannis Kounellis imagined Boogie-Woogie, an action with donkeys disguised as men. The action, envisaged to be performed on stage, never saw the light of day and was consequently removed from the official body of work of the artist, then gradually forgotten. Despite its unfortunate fate, some drawings and documents related to Kounellis’ project can still be helpful at present to shed light upon Boogie-Woogie. This paper focuses on this unperformed action, analyzing the supporting documentation to understand the creative process behind it and its possible meanings. The aim is primarily the will to reintegrate Boogie-Woogie into Kounellis’ corpus, paying particular attention to the contemporary cultural context. The analysis of the project permits to point out some general reflections on Kounellis’ works specifically conceived for theatre, underlining the continuity between these outcomes and the works simultaneously presented in art galleries and in more traditional contexts. In addition, a wide range of possible sources for Boogie-Woogie are proposed and discussed, trying to unveil its complex iconography and meanings. In doing so, the role of Boogie-Woogie in Kounellis’ body of work would hopefully be clarified, just as the utmost importance of some references, between theatre, painting, cinema etc., shaping a problematic and challenging background context

Finance, globalisation, technology and inequality: Do nonlinearities matter?

Relying on data for 90 economies over 1970-2015 and panel estimation techniques, we investigate how financial development, globalisation and technology affect income inequality. Our findings reveal significant nonlinearities, consistent with either Ushaped or inverted-U shaped relationships. As such, depending on whether a certain threshold value is achieved, the same determinants of income distribution exert opposite effects in different countries. Globalisation is associated with increasing inequality in most advanced economies, but with falling disparities for the large majority of emerging economies. Technology and financial development lead to increasing inequality for most emerging economies, while the effects for advanced economies are mixed. Furthermore, our results indicate that credit constraints act as a transmission channel for the effects of financial development on inequality, foreign direct investment and the supply of unskilled labour for the impact of technology and the supply of skilled labour for the effects of globalisation
