Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. 2-axis and 3-axis mobile antennas control optimization
Cette thèse porte sur l'amélioration des performances de suivi de trajectoires des antennes à 2 et 3 axes produites par Safran Data Systems, à travers l'application de la méthodologie de commande robuste CRONE multivariable. Cela implique une modélisation complète des antennes, afin d'intégrer les phénomènes mécaniques pouvant dégrader les performances de la boucle fermée, tels que le couplage et la souplesse. Les spécifications et les contraintes pour la synthèse de la commande CRONE sont ensuite définies à partir de la réponse fréquentielle du modèle calibré et de son domaine d'incertitudes.La première partie des travaux se concentre sur la modélisation des antennes à 2 et 3 axes. Les modèles géométriques de dynamiques des antennes sont développés en utilisant les outils de modélisation robotique, adaptés à un système flexible. Ensuite, les modèles sont complétés en y intégrant les phénomènes mécaniques non linéaires tels que les frottements, les jeux et l'usure. Les effets des perturbations dues au vent sur la dynamique des antennes sont ensuite étudiés. Des modèles fractionnaires des turbulences du vent, basés sur le modèle de von Kármán, sont proposés afin de concevoir un simulateur réaliste de la vitesse du vent.La deuxième partie de cette thèse est consacrée à l'optimisation des lois de commande des antennes à 2 et 3 axes. Les modèles dynamiques développés sont calibrés et validés. Leur analyse met en évidence l'existence des variations paramétriques et du couplage mécanique, notamment dans le cas d'une antenne 3 axes, ce qui prouve la nécessité d'une loi de commande robuste pour assurer un haut degré de stabilité pour tous les états paramétriques du procédé. L'étude permet également de déterminer les domaines fréquentiels des incertitudes du procédé pour la synthèse de la commande robuste, à savoir la commande CRONE, et son application aux antennes. Dans le cas d'une antenne 2 axes, le couplage reste limité, l'approche CRONE multi-SISO (régulateur décentralisé) est donc choisie afin d'inclure des effets du couplage dans les incertitudes du procédé nominal diagonal. Dans le cas d'une antenne 3 axes, le couplage est plus important, par conséquent les deux approches de la commande CRONE multivariable: multi-SISO et MIMO complet (régulateur centralisé) sont appliquées et testées. La validation de la commande CRONE est effectuée tout d'abord, au travers des essais de suivi de cibles en simulation, puis sur les antennes réelles. En comparaison avec les performances actuelles obtenues avec un régulateur PI, et notamment avec un régulateur PID, la commande CRONE fournit des résultats plus précis et plus stables pour tous les états paramétriques. Le CRONE MIMO se distingue par son efficacité contre le couplage, par rapport à la synthèse multi-SISO. Le niveau de performances obtenu lors des essais réels valide la méthodologie de commande robuste présentée dans cette thèse.This PhD thesis focuses on the improvement of the trajectory tracking performance of the 2-axis and 3-axis antennas produced by Safran Data Systems, through the application of the multivariable robust CRONE control methodology. This involves firstly a complete antenna modeling, in order to integrate the mechanical phenomena that can degrade the performances of the closed-loop, such as coupling or flexibility. The specifications and constraints for the CRONE control design are then defined from the calibrated model frequency responses and its uncertainty domain.The first part of this work deals with the 2-axis and 3-axis antenna modeling. The antenna geometrical and dynamical models are developed using robotic modeling tools, adapted to a flexible system. Then the models are completed by integrating nonlinear mechanical phenomena, such as friction, backlash and wear. The wind disturbance effects on the antenna dynamics are then studied. Fractional wind turbulence models, based on the von Kármán model, are proposed in order to design a realistic wind speed simulator.The second part of this PhD thesis is devoted to the 2-axis and 3-axis antenna control optimization. The developed dynamical models are calibrated and validated. Their analysis highlights the existence of parametric variations and mechanical coupling, especially in the case of a 3-axis antenna, which shows the need for a robust control to ensure a high stability degree for all the parametric plant states. The model analysis also determines the plant uncertainty frequency domain for the robust control design, namely the CRONE methodology, and its application to the antennas. In the case of a 2-axis antenna, the coupling remains limited, therefore the multi-SISO CRONE approach (decentralized controller) is chosen in order to include coupling effects into the nominal diagonal plant uncertainties. In the case of a 3-axis antenna, the coupling is more important, therefore both approaches of the multivariable CRONE control: multi-SISO and full MIMO (centralized controller) are applied and tested. The CRONE control validation is carried out first, through target tracking tests in simulation and then, on the real antennas. In comparison with the actual performances obtained with the PI controller, and notably with a PID controller, the CRONE controller provides more precise and more stable results for all parametric states. The CRONE MIMO stands out for its efficiency against coupling compared to the multi-SISO synthesis. The performance level obtained during real tests validates the robust control methodology presented in this thesis

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
