Isaiah and Martha Lang papers

    No full text
This collection consists of the correspondence and business records of Isaiah S. and Martha Lang, New Hampshire farmers. It includes significant groupings of letters from Lang's uncle, David M. Sanborn, a Baltimore physician, and from relatives farming on the Minnesota frontier. The letters from Sanborn are especially interesting in light of their particular references to economic and social conditions in a "border state" immediately before and during the Civil War

    Dr Martin Lang on Militancy

    No full text
Dr. Martin Lang (The University of Kent) discusses what militancy means with regards to society and art. His talk will be followed by a Q&A chaired by David Blackmore, artist in residency at the UCL Art Museum, and Slade graduate, whose own research focuses on Countess Makievicz: militant revolutionary, suffragette and Slade alumni.</p

From the sympatric A. pygmaea vadimi, it can be distinguished by further characters in addition to those mentioned above: 1) in the male, on the forewing upperside, the brand is present, whereas it is absent or vestigial in A. pygmaea vadimi; 2) on the forewing upperside, the discal spots are usually larger; 3) in the female, on the forewing upperside, the discal spots are smaller.

Remarks. Sakai et al. (2001) mentioned a record of Aulocera sybillina with the data as “Pingwu (Pingwu-Jiuzhaigou) (3,300 m), Sungqu (Songpan County), 16.VIII.1987 ” without any further comment. Although the information seems vague, the site “Pingwu-Jiuzhaigou, 3,300 m ” is clearly the same as Huangtu-liang Pass which is of the same altitude and is the type locality of A. longanfua and A. pygmaea vadimi. However, the collecting date is half a month later than that of A. longanfua and A. pygmaea vadimi. Since Sakai et al. (2001) did not illustrate any specimen with the above information, it is not known whether this record is the true sybillina or just a longanfua.

Distribution. China (N. The differential diagnosis with Aulocera longanfua is given in the diagnosis section of the latter, below.

Remarks. Although the type localites of Aulocera pygmaea vadimi and the nominate subspecies are not far away from each other, their habitats are two isolated summits which means gene flow between the two populations is unlikely. Considering the morphological differences between the two taxa, this subspecies is retained as valid.

Distribution. China (N. Generalized structured additive regression based on Bayesian P-splines

    No full text
Generalized additive models (GAM) for modelling nonlinear effects of continuous covariates are now well established tools for the applied statistician. In this paper we develop Bayesian GAM's and extensions to generalized structured additive regression based on one or two dimensional P-splines as the main building block. The approach extends previous work by Lang und Brezger (2003) for Gaussian responses. Inference relies on Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation techniques, and is either based on iteratively weighted least squares (IWLS) proposals or on latent utility representations of (multi)categorical regression models. Our approach covers the most common univariate response distributions, e.g. the Binomial, Poisson or Gamma distribution, as well as multicategorical responses. For the first time, we present Bayesian semiparametric inference for the widely used multinomial logit models. As we will demonstrate through two applications on the forest health status of trees and a space-time analysis of health insurance data, the approach allows realistic modelling of complex problems. We consider the enormous flexibility and extendability of our approach as a main advantage of Bayesian inference based on MCMC techniques compared to more traditional approaches. Software for the methodology presented in the paper is provided within the public domain package BayesX
