Ecotourism on Lancelin Island, Western Australia
Get PDFConcern for the conservation of flora and fauna in natural areas and the potential impacts of human activity, recreation and tourism has become a high priority. Combining appropriate ecotourism activity with conservation guidelines is the main focus of this concern. These issues are of great importance to the crayfishing community of Lancelin, who are concerned about the future of their small offshore island (Lancelin Island). The purpose of this study was to investigate patterns of recreational usage on Lancelin Island and assess the acceptance of a newly constructed hardwood boardwalk and viewing platform designed to minimise the disruption of flora and fauna caused by visitors. The study would also determine whether an additional walkway would be appropriate. Research using the survey interview method was conducted over four separate visits to the island. Results showed that Lancelin Island is a popular ecotourism and recreational destination for local residents and their visiting families and friends. Respondents viewed the island as a place for recreation and also as a place for the protection of flora and fauna. Although the existing walkway is popular, current visitor numbers indicate that there is no immediate need for this structure to be extended

No full textThe Lancelin Island Lagoon is a small area of reef habitat on the western side of Lancelin Island and a popular snorkelling and diving destination. Water depth ranges from less than 0.3 m on the intertidal reefs to less than 3 m on the sand or seagrass-covered bottom. The area has a diverse array of benthic marine habitat. During a marine survey of the area, over 200 flora and fauna species were positively identified, with many more remaining unidentified due to the diversity of species supported in this marine environment. The survey, which was facilitated by direct observations and photographs, also identified 13 large corals that are a feature of the lagoon\u27s environment. Lancelin Island Lagoon is accessible to divers and swimmers only during low swell, as a strong current develops from wave energy converging over the outside reefs. The peak use period of the lagoon coincides with low summer/autumn swells, making it a popular destination for holidaymakers. The deeper areas of the lagoon are currently accessible by boat, but a conflict of use exists between boats, divers and swimmers, due to the lagoon\u27s small area. Extensive fishing and spearfishing has resulted in the local extinction of many larger edible species, with smaller fish now being targeted. The purpose of the Lancelin Island lagoon FHPA is to be established are: i) the conservation and protection of fish, fish breeding areas, fish fossils or the aquatic ecosystem; ii) the management of fish and activities relating to the appreciation or observation of fish

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
