    We introduce, characterise and provide a combinatorial interpretation for the so-called q-Jacobi–Stirling numbers. This study is motivated by their key role in the (reciprocal) expansion of any power of a second order q-differential operator having the q-classical polynomials as eigenfunctions in terms of other even order operators, which we explicitly construct in this work. The results here obtained can be viewed as the q-version of those given by Everitt et al. and by the first author, whilst the combinatorics of this new set of numbers is a q-version of the Jacobi–Stirling numbers given by Gelineau and the second author

    Progressive Transmission of High-Dimensional Data Features for Inference at the Network Edge

    Uploading high-dimensional features from edge devices to an edge server over wireless channels creates a communication bottleneck for edge inference. To tackle the challenge, we propose the progressive feature transmission (ProgressFTX) protocol, which minimizes the overhead by progressively transmitting features until a target confidence level is reached. The control of the protocol to accelerate inference is designed with two key operations. The first, importance-aware feature selection, guides the server to select the most discriminative feature dimensions. The second is transmission-termination control such that the feature transmission is stopped when the incremental uncertainty reduction by further transmission is outweighed by its communication cost. The indices of the selected features and transmission decision are fed back to the device in each slot. The sub-optimal policy is obtained for classification using a convolutional neural network. Experimental results on a real-world dataset shows that ProgressFTX can substantially reduce the communication latency compared to conventional feature pruning and random feature transmission

    Perturbative analytic theory of an ultrahigh-Q toroidal microcavity

    A perturbation theoretic approach is proposed as an efficient characterization tool for a tapered fiber coupled ultrahigh-quality factor (Q) toroidal microcavity with a small inverse aspect ratio. The Helmholtz equation with an assumption of quasi-TE/TM modes in local toroidal coordinates is solved via a power series expansion in terms of the inverse aspect ratio and the expanded eigenmode solutions are further manipulated iteratively to generate various characteristic metrics of the ultrahigh-Q toroidal microcavity coupled to a tapered fiber waveguide. Resonance wavelengths, free spectral ranges, cavity mode volumes, phase-matching conditions, and radiative Q factors are derived along with a mode characterization given by a characteristic equation. Calculated results are in excellent agreement with full vectorial finite-element simulations. The results are useful as a shortcut to avoid full numerical simulation, and also render intuitive insight into the modal properties of toroidal microcavities

    Recent research in macroeconomics has emphasized the importance of linking the financial and real sectors and the need for working with optimizing models. Tobin’s Q model of investment would appear to provide a framework that can satisfy these two criteria. In contrast to the original presentation of the Q model, the formal development has not recognized that the firm actively participates in a number of financial markets; in this broader context, we show that Q is likely to be an uninformative and possibly misleading signal for investment expenditures . We then endeavor to turn this negative theoretical result to positive advantage in resolving a number of empirical problems with Q models, but the modifications dictated by the theory receive little support from the data.

    IEEE 802.11n MAC frame aggregation mechanisms for next-generation high-throughput WLANs [Medium access control protocols for wireless LANs]

    IEEE 802.11n is an ongoing next-generation wireless LAN standard that supports a very highspeed connection with more than 100 Mb/s data throughput measured at the medium access control layer. This article investigates the key MAC enhancements that help 802.11n achieve high throughput and high efficiency. A detailed description is given for various frame aggregation mechanisms proposed in the latest 802.11n draft standard. Our simulation results confirm that A-MSDU, A-MPDU, and a combination of these methods improve extensively the channel efficiency and data throughput. We analyze the performance of each frame aggregation scheme in distinct scenarios, and we conclude that overall, the two-level aggregation is the most efficacious

    Resistance and resilience of nitrifying bacteria in aerobic granules to pH shock

    To investigate the response difference between flocculent sludge and granular sludge in unfavourable environmental conditions, 1-h pH shock was exerted to both granular sludge and flocculent sludge with the same biomass concentration and the same population sizes of nitrifying bacteria. It was found that nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) were more sensitive to pH than ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). In addition, the deviation of 3 pH units to alkaline from the optimal pH was much more detrimental to AOB and NOB in both flocculent sludge and granular sludge compared with the deviation of 3 pH units to acidic. However, respirometric activities of both AOB and NOB in granular sludge after pH shock at 5 and 11 were much higher than those in the flocculent sludge. The recovery of nitrifying activities by only one batch culture indicated that nitrifying bacteria in granular sludge experienced a much less irreversible loss compared with flocculent sludge. The results in this study showed that compact structure and the big size of granules could play a buffering role to unfavourable conditions which resulted in a much higher resistance and resilience to shock

    A Q-learning based multi-strategy integrated artificial bee colony algorithm with application in unmanned vehicle path planning

    Artificial bee colony (ABC) is a prominent algorithm that offers great exploration capabilities among various meta-heuristic algorithms. However, its monotonous and one-dimensional search strategy limits its searching performance in the solving process. Thus, to address this issue, a Q-learning based multi-strategy integrated ABC algorithm (QMABC) is proposed. In the QMABC, multiple search strategies are proposed to utilize different individual experiences and search approaches for solution updates. Then, Q-learning is employed for strategy selection. In comparison to previous studies, this paper introduces more effective state and action configurations within the framework of Q-learning. To evaluate the performance of the QMABC, CEC 2017 benchmark functions are adopted to compare it to different meta-heuristic algorithms including ABC based and non-ABC based algorithms. Moreover, applications in path planning are implemented to further verify the effectiveness of the QMABC.
