In this work we present a proposal for the translation and study of Tertullian's text Ad Uxorem. This epistle to his wife written in the 3rd century serves as a documentary reference to understand how an author and thinker from that period understands the experience of marriage between Christians and its implications in their daily lives. This work has two main objectives: to make available the first translation 3 as far as we know 3 into Portuguese of Ad Uxorem, thus helping to enrich the always poor panorama of patristic texts available in the language of Camões; and understand, from this work and its author, how the first Christians «christianized» marriage, reconciling Roman traditions with the biblical vision
The process of Christian initiation appears, especially in the fourth century, as a fundamental instance for the formation and transformation of aspirants to baptism. St. Ambrose of Milan was aware of this, who, in his pastoral concern, devoted himself to the formation of catechumens who were about to receive the sacraments of Christian initiation. In this way, his mystagogical catechesis – De Sacramentis and De Mysteriis – make known not only the contents and meaning of the baptismal liturgy in the explanation of the rites and sacraments received, but, above all, the methodology used by our author to transmit all the catechetical-liturgical richness of the Church‟s Tradition. Thus, these works appear as the culmination of the entire process of Christian initiation, presenting a great catechetical, liturgical, theological, moral, exegetical and spiritual richness, very enlightening and valid for our days. It is in this perspective that we will study the aforementioned works, observing their various elements, within the catechumenal context, defining this context and its characteristics, always from a liturgical-catechetical perspective
With our theme “Poverty as a pastoral challenge of the Church” we have as our main objective, finding out as a result of the study of the Homilies on the Gospel according to St. Matthew, by John of Antioch, later “Chrysostom”, how can we adapt and bringing in to our days the pastoral activity of the followers bridging therefore the social message between John Chrysostom and the social thought of Pope Francis. This work assumes importance in our days because it offers us the foundations of tradition to understanding the “preferential option / love for the poor” and the pastoral praxis of the Church.
We shall develop our work in four chapters, starting with the historical, social and religious contextualization in which our author is inserted. Then we'll move to preaching, where we will outline the main characteristics of preaching assuming the figure of our author as a preacher in Antioch, as well as his oratory work. On the third chapter we will approach the Gospel homilies according to St. Matthew, first highlighting the fundamental thematic and, in a second moment, we will analyze in full three fundamental homilies to the theme under study. In the fourth and final chapter, we will briefly present some pontifical documents leading up to Pope Francis Magisterium, and then we will try to understand which elements of John Chrysostom social thinking are present in the current Bishop of Rome
A bondade do matrimónio segundo Santo Agostinho : leitura do tratado De bono coniugali
The present dissertation, developed as part of the Integrated Masters degree in Theology
(MIT), has the scope of bringing to nowadays the doctrine of Saint Augustin regarding
matrimony, specifically in regards of his treatise De bono coniugali where the bishop of Hippo
synthesizes his thought on the subject matter. In the referred work, Augustin gives us a defense
of the values of matrimony in the midst of a personal and sociocultural environment not very
welcoming to it. For this reason, we decided to find in this Church Father solid guidelines to
propose anew for us today theological reasoning for the goodness and excellency of matrimony,
which is again highly disregarded. In order to do so, after an essential contextual analysis of the
author and his work, we focused in De bono coniugali trying to extract the fundamental ideas
of Augustine’s theology regarding matrimony, which had such a great impact in the subsequent
doctrines in moral and theology
The relevance of the current ecological crisis extends to all areas of knowledge, including theology. This awareness was mainly brought by the publication of Lynn White's article, "The Historical Roots of Our Ecologic Crisis", in 1967. In this article, the author states that the root of the ecological crisis is to be found in the cosmological and anthropological transformations originated by Christian biblical hermeneutics, especially in the Western tradition, and mainly due to the biblical mandate for mankind to dominate the earth (cf. Gn 1, 26). Our goal in this dissertation is to assess Lynn White's thesis through the lens of the Confessions of Saint Augustine. Specifically, given that White's critique often targets Augustine of Hippo, there arises a necessity to reexamine Augustinian thought concerning ecological perspectives. In recent years, there has been a concerted effort to revisit the writings of this Church Father in light of ecological concerns. We focus on the Confessions because, the Bishop of Hippo in them not only offers us a mature exegesis of the Hexaemeron, but also due to the significant impact of this work on later tradition. This study demonstrates that despite the transformations identified by White, Saint Augustine defends the goodness of Creation. This awareness arises from the allegorical exegesis carried out in accordance with the regula fidei, enabling us to affirm the reciprocity between the love of humanity and the praise of creatures. However, although humanity is the only creature made in the imago Dei, its capacity to judge Creation is limited, and its condition of moral fragility often leads to the exchange of amore Deo for amore curarum, contributing to disorder in society. Thus, it was possible to establish a dialogue between the two authors, especially regarding the theological foundations in question, despite the temporal distance that separates them.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Saint Ignatius of Antioquia self-presents himself as "a man prone to unity" (Filad. VIII). The unit is, in fact, the programme of its episcopal world, as it makes it known in its letters. Such a precomposite makes it one of the great builders of communities, in the path of St. Paul, which undoubtedly has a model. The aim of this dissertation is to better understand the notion of church present in the letters of St. Ignatius of Antioch, taking as a key of reading the notion of "Synphonia" that the author is used to restore the "unity" of the church, in a context of multiple threats to " Ecclesial "Concord. It will be sought to identify the foundations on which the church is based, that is, to look with some depth to those who preside over it and for those who compose it in its various members. Everything in the pursuit of peace and harmony to which it is called to live the Church of God. The work will be divided into three moments: in the first moment we look at the figure of Ignatius and his writings; In a second moment we will enter the center of our work, in which we penetrate the "symphony" of the Church. Observing here its fundamental liturgical dimension (Eucharist), its Maestro (bishop), the "choir" (Assembly of all the faithful), and its "with-servants" (Elders and Deacons); In a third moment, we will look at a whole set of vocabulary (expressions of unity) that allow us to understand the thought of St. Ignacio
The present study aims to examine the sacrament of the Eucharist from the perspective of patristic literature. For this purpose, we will employ as a source the text of Letter 63 from Saint Cyprian of Carthage, regarded as the earliest known “essay” on the Eucharist. Sensitive to the coherence between the Lex orandi and the Lex credendi, Cyprian struggled for the defense of the ritual and liturgical practice of the Church, which offers wine mixed with water in the eucharistic chalice, attending to the profound link between christology, eclesiology and sacramentology. In this paper, we will present, translate, and study the Letter 63 of Cyprian, seeking to demonstrate how, despite his pastoral rather than theological background, the author argues and justifies his pastoral position in defense of liturgical and ecclesial tradition. In this defense, rather than a mere “canonical” or circumstantial response from a pastor aware of “liturgical abuses”, we find a comprehensive Eucharistic theology, grounded in Scripture, which implicitly asserts that the Church makes the Eucharist, and that the Eucharist makes the Church. It is primarily this clarity and contemporary relevance at both theological and pastoral level that we seek to examine in this African pastor of the 3rd century
The life of San Isidro of Madrid
This anonymous Life of Isidro of Madrid (d. pre-1192) represents a rare medieval effort to justify the sanctification of a non-noble layman, in this case, a tenant farmer. Note how the author does this, in part, by depicting Isidro as a man who made a virtue out of the curse inflicted on Adam ( You will earn your bread from the labor of your hands and the sweat of your brow, Genesis 3:19) by embracing the life of an agricultural laborer. Isidro was canonized in 1622, along with Ignatius Loyola, Francis Xavier, Teresa of Ávila, and Philip Neri. Shortly thereafter, Isidro became the patron saint of Madrid
The Canticle of the Creatures by Francis of Assisi (1181/82–1226) and the Care of Our Common Home
In the present essay, we want to show how the Canticle of the Creatures, which we might call “The Canticle of Universal Brotherhood”, is much more than the Canticle of Brother Sun or of a single man. The author himself is much more than the exceptional case of a nature-friendly medieval saint who, therefore, continues to inspire the promoters of ecology and, especially after the papal encyclical Laudato Si’, constitutes the ecumenical matrix for the care of our common home. To this end, in this paper, we focus on two moments that, in the construction of the tutelary figure of Francis of Assisi, constitute a kind of diptych or portals which open and recapitulate the reconstructive intuition he bequeathed to us: (1) the vocational moment: Go and repair my house; and (2) the testamentary moment, in which the Founder, who never wanted to found anything, legates his manifesto for building the common home as a universal brotherhood, turning the “stones” into a canticle. Above all, we want to highlight the relevance of Franciscan spirituality, expressed particularly in the Canticle of the Creatures, and thus the Franciscan aesthetics for the modern ecology
