Over the past forty years, Howard Barrows’ contributions to PBL research have influenced and guided educational research and practice in a diversity of domains. It is necessary to make visible to all PBL scholars what has been accomplished, what is perceived as significant, and what is the scope of applicability for Barrows’ groundbreaking findings. As more disciplines recognize Barrows’ efforts and adopt PBL in education, it becomes crucial but challenging to sustain community memory so that PBL scholars are kept well informed of research innovations in various domains. In this paper, we review Barrows’ scholarly efforts in PBL and reveal the impacts on subsequent studies in various domains. A bibliometrics analysis is conducted on Barrows’ PBL publications and the corresponding citations to quantitatively measure Barrows’ impact. Our findings demonstrate Barrows’ exceptional contributions to PBL and the disciplinary differences in conducting PBL studies based on Barrows’ work. It is also revealed that PBL scholars who share similar interests have rarely collaborated with each other. The PBL research community has a real opportunity to connect isolated research groups and reduce the fragmentation so that research innovations in one domain can be disseminated to inform other scholars

The help (2010) by Kathryn Stockett, tell's the story of a society on the south of the United States through the eyes of three main characters Aibileen, Minny and Skeeter. All of them are responsible by the creation of a metaficcional book named Help, where the characters show us their frustrations and feelings to the racist white society. The author, born in a racist context on the decade of 1960, write the book to honor her maid and she wants to problematic the North American black society's point of view in a period of racial segregation. The book The help have been an ambiguous reception receiving critics by researchers and media, mainly because after the movie adaptation The help, that presents the black status within the actual American society, as the historical role of the white society. This thesis' aim is to identify the main characters' identities and the post-colonial resistances suffer by them. This work is divide in four chapters that seek to identify, first, the authors' motivations to write the narrative, and secondly an analysis of racist situations on the book and in its origins. Afterwords, we study how the identity of feminine subjects of the third world are built, and in the last part, we discuss how the post-colonial resistance is theoretically bring and analyzed in the book. To narrow the research, we analyse the characters in a separated way, put in evidence the formative aspects belonged to each one of the proposed analysis at each chapter. It is understood that the written resistance happened with the creation of the metaficcional book The Help is the main form of the acquisition of freedom to the main characters, and beyond the book the other resistances happened on the novel152 f. : il

In Every Town and Village: Adaptive Strategies in the Communication of Krishna Consciousness in the UK, the First Thirty Years

    No full text
The raison d'être of ISKCON is the communication of the name of Krishna worldwide, ensuring that it reaches into the hearts and minds of those in every town and village. ISKCON's own intention, derived from the teachings of Chaitanya and preached unceasingly by the founder, Bhaktivedanta Swami, provides a focus for assessing the success of the movement since its arrival in England in 1968. What strategies have been adopted for achieving this objective? How have the strategies changed as ISKCON has increased its membership and support throughout the UK, and has become more established on the public religious scene? Using ISKCON's publications and ephemera, the author evaluates the shift from world-rejection to social integration, and from the desire for refuge to the more recent commitment to encounter and dialogue. Does this represent a change of message or merely the rise of new messengers

The purpose of this research is to describe the blue alien as the phenomenon Alien’s representation in science fiction of Bollywood and Bollywood’s action in bringing outer space alien to Indian culture that is represented in Koi Mil Gaya film. This research uses qualitative research. The researcher needs popular literature by Ida Rochani Adi to get what the author is willing to share her readers. It is also a way to the researcher to investigate why the author choose alien as the new character, and is there popular culture inside the character evidences the effects and goals of the author in creating a story. The analysis reveals that the alien’s representation of Bollywood’s science fiction, and Bollywood’s action in bringing outer space alien to India culture. The conclusion shows there are similar formula in each Bollywood science fiction in alien’s representation and Bollywood action in bringing outer space alien to India culture is influenced by 3 factors, there are: Hollywood influence, Ancient India influence, and popular news in India. The researcher uses the symbol to analyze the blue alien as the representation of Lord Krishna. It is Hindu mythology. Hindu mythology is popular culture in India belief. It is appropriate with the researcher’s assumption that the blue alien has correlation with India culture. In conclusion, the alien which has blue skin is the appearance of Lord Krishna

A Persian Praise of Krishna: A Note on the Preface of Amānat Rāy’s Persian Bhāgavaṭa Purāṇa (1733)

This paper deals with the introductory section of a little-known 18th- century Persian versified translation of the tenth skandha of the Bhāgavaṭa Purāṇa, the Jilwa-yi ẕāt “The epiphany of the Essence”, completed in Delhi in 1733 by Amānat Rāy, a Vishnuite pupil of the influential poet-philosopher Mīrzā ‘Abd al-Qādir Bīdil (1644-1720). Notwithstanding its obvious relevance for the intellectual and religious history of late Mughal South Asia, especially as far as the use of Persian as prestigious literary-devotional medium among the communities of Hindu secretaries of North India is concerned, the text has never been the object of any study up until now. In these preliminary remarks, I focus not so much on the translation itself but on the relatively long preface embedded by Amānat in his work: here the author provides an articulate description of Krishna filtered through the Persian poetic canon and a series of conceptual keys for reading his work, showing the deep connections between the poetic lesson of his master Bīdil, the domi- nant Sufi-Vedantic views and the still little understood sphere of Krishnaite devotion in the Persianate environment of courtly Delhi in the 1700s

Retrospective study on the occurrence of Salmonella serotypes in veterinary specimens of Atlantic Canada (2012–2021)

    No full text
Aim: This study aimed to summarize the frequency and the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of the Salmonella serotypes identified from the specimens of companion animals, livestock, avian, wildlife and exotic species within Atlantic Canada. Materials and methods: The retrospective electronic laboratory data of microbiological analyses of a selected subset of samples from 03 January 2012 to 29 December 2021 submitted from various animal species were retrieved. The frequency of Salmonella serotypes identified, and their antimicrobial susceptibility results obtained using the disk diffusion or broth method were analysed. The test results were interpreted according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute standard. The Salmonella serotypes were identified by slide agglutination (Kauffman-White-Le-Minor Scheme) and/or the Whole Genome Sequencing for the Salmonella in silico Serovar Typing Resource-based identification. Results: Of the cases included in this study, 4.6% (n = 154) had at least one Salmonella isolate, corresponding to 55 different serovars. Salmonella isolation was highest from exotic animal species (n = 40, 1.20%), followed by porcine (n = 26, 0.78%), and canine (n = 23, 0.69%). Salmonella subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium was predominant among exotic mammals, porcine and caprine samples, whereas S. Enteritidis was mostly identified in bovine and canine samples. S. Typhimurium of porcine origin was frequently resistant (>70.0%) to ampicillin. In contrast, S. Typhimurium isolates from porcine and caprine samples were susceptible (>70.0%) to florfenicol. S. Oranienburg from equine samples was susceptible to chloramphenicol, but frequently resistant (>90.0%) to azithromycin. In avian samples, S. Copenhagen was susceptible (>90.0%) to florfenicol, whereas Muenchen was frequently resistant (>90.0%) to florfenicol. S. subsp. diarizonae serovar IIIb:61:k:1,5 of ovine origin was resistant (50.0% isolates) to sulfadimethoxine. No significant changes were observed in the antibiotic resistance profiles across the study years. Conclusions: This report provides data for surveillance studies, distribution of Salmonella serotypes and their antimicrobial resistance among veterinary specimens of Atlantic Canada. Keywords: Atlantic Canada; Salmonella; antibiotic resistance; exotic animals; laboratory data

The Social Cost-of-Living: Welfare Foundations and Estimation

We present a new class of social cost-of-living indices and a nonparametric framework for estimating these and other social cost-of- living indices. Common social cost-of-living indices can be understood as aggregator functions of approximations of individual cost-of-living indices. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is the expenditure-weighted average of first-order approximations of each individual’s cost-of-living index. This is troubling for three reasons. First, it has not been shown to have a welfare economic foundation for the case where agents are heterogeneous (as they clearly are.) Second, it uses an expenditure-weighted average which downweights the experience of poor households relative to rich households. Finally, it uses only first-order approximations of each individual’s cost-of-living index, and thus ignores substitution effects. We propose a “common-scaling” social cost-of-living index, which is defined as the single scaling to everyone’s expenditure which holds social welfare constant across a price change. Our approach has an explicit social welfare foundation and allows us to choose the weights on the costs of rich and poor households. We also give a unique solution for the welfare function for the case where the weights are independent of household expenditure. A first order approximation of our social cost-of- living index nests as special cases commonly used indices such as the CPI. We also provide a nonparametric method for estimating second- order approximations (which account for substitution effects).Inflation, Social cost-of-living, Demand, Average Derivatives

Rent - seeking trade policy : a time series approach

Using a time-series approach, the author analyzes the relationship between the extent of rent-seeking trade policy and both political and economic variables. For rent-seeking trade policy, the indicator he uses is the number of foreign-trade regulations passed each year for the benefit of a single firm or industry. The author uses data from Uruguay for 1925-83. Uruguay, which experienced an impressive economic decline, is an outstanding example of a rent-seeking society. After being a wealthy economy in midcentury, it suffered almost complete stagnation, which led to social and policital disintegration by the end of the 1960s. Three decades of restrictive regulations on foreign trade had created a nearly closed economy by the end of the 1960s. It was worth analyzing whether policymakers'great receptiveness to demands for protection could account for Uruguay's decline. Over the period 1925-83, the author finds almost 4,000 laws, decrees, and administrative resolutions that create, maintain, or modify a foreign-trade regulation for the benefit of a single firm or industry. About half of them explicitly identify the petitioner - usually a firm or guild. Since the size of the Uruguayan economy changed over the period studied, the author scales the annual number of regulations by output or exports to measure the extent of rent-seeking trade policy. The author shows that the extent of rent-seeking trade policy increased with discretionary policies and under dictatorship. (In the period studied, there were two stages of democracy - until 1932 and from 1943-72 - and two stages of dictatorship.) He also shows that rent-seeking trade restrictions increased under import-substitution strategies and, more unexpectedly, under active export promotion. This suggests that discretionary power leads to wasteful distribution, whether it is used to support inward- or outward-oriented policies. Finally, the author analyzes the correlation between innovations in the trade policy indicator and innovations in the growth rates of output and exports, with a lag of up to 20 years. Surprisingly, he finds a positive correlation with output growth rates after two or three years. But the correlation becomes negative some years later, particularly in the case of exports. The short-run positive impact on growth rates, together with the surprisingly long time lag before the negative impact, may account for policymakers'receptiveness to demands for protection.Trade Policy,Achieving Shared Growth,TF054105-DONOR FUNDED OPERATION ADMINISTRATION FEE INCOME AND EXPENSE ACCOUNT,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies
