Voices, values, and the urban village: An imagined roundtable for Cha Kwo Ling
In 2022, the Outline Zoning Plan S/K15/27 was approved by the Hong Kong Government, confirming the demolition of Cha Kwo Ling Village (hereinafter: CKL Village) for high-density residential development. The fate of CKL Village and the responses it instigated raises how various stakeholders value the same space differently, but lack a sufficiently comprehensive framework and inclusive, common platform to express and negotiate them. Consequently, the unarticulated heritage assets often become subordinate to urban development.Thus, this thesis analyses four perspectives - namely the Government, the Developer, the Villager, and the Hong Konger - to understand their respective valuations of CKL Village, and whether there are potentials amidst their similarities and differences. In academia, these perspectives have previously been addressed in relation to Hong Kong's heritage; but since the Anti-Extradition Law Movement (2019), there is a need to renew the understanding of these societal stakeholders and their motivations. Thus, this thesis serves as a theoretical rehearsal of gathering and aligning different voices, utilising UNESCO's values and attributes framework, and resonating with the first two steps of the Historic Urban Landscape concept.In doing so, the thesis presents two key critiques against the Hong Kong Government's current heritage mechanism. Firstly, the underlying monument-based approach that fails to address heritage assets in the form of groups and landscapes. Secondly, the reluctance to engage with the existing communities who currently occupy the heritage. Enhanced 3-epi-25-hydroxyvitamin D3 signal leads to overestimation of its concentration and amplifies interference in 25-hydroxyvitamin D LC-MS/MS assays
Background 3-epi-25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (3-epi-25OHD3) interferes in most liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) assays for 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD). The clinical significance of this is unclear, with concentrations from undetectable to 230 nmol/L reported. Many studies have quantified 3-epi-25OHD3 based on 25OHD3 calibrators or other indirect methods, and we speculated that this contributes to the observed variability in reported 3-epi-25OHD3 concentrations.
Methods We compared continuous MS/MS infusions of 3-epi-25OHD3 and 25OHD3 solutions, spiked both analytes into the same serum matrix and analysed patient samples to assess the effect of three different quantitation methods on 3-epi-25OHD3 concentration. Experiments were performed on an LC-MS/MS system using a phenyl column which does not resolve 3-epi-25OHD3, and a modified method utilizing a Zorbax SB-CN column that chromatographically resolves 3-epi-25OHD3 from 25OHD3.
Results A greater 3-epi-25OHD3 signal, compared with 25OHD3, was observed during equimolar post-column continuous infusion of analyte solutions, and following analysis of a serum pool spiked with both analytes. 3-epi-25OHD3 signal enhancement was dependent on mobile phase composition. Compared with 3-epi-25OHD3 calibrators, indirect quantitation methods resulted in up to 10 times as many samples having 3-epi-25OHD3 concentrations ≥ 10 nmol/L, and an approximately fourfold increase in the maximum observed 3-epi-25OHD3 concentration to 95 nmol/L.
Conclusions Enhanced 3-epi-25OHD3 signal leads to overestimation of its concentrations in the indirect quantitation methods used in many previous studies. The enhanced signal may contribute to greater interference in some 25OHD LC-MS/MS assays than others. We highlight that equimolar responses cannot be assumed in LC-MS/MS systems, even if two molecules are structurally similar

Clinical lung transplant was first performed in Hong Kong in 1995. In the early years, the
volume of activity was very low. There has been a clear trend of increasing volume in the past few years. The recipient pathology is very different from the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) database, with complete absence of cystic fibrosis and alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, and a predominance of diseases of the pulmonary circulation. Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) has a much higher representation on the waiting list than the ISHLT. The survival of patients who received a lung transplant in Hong Kong compares favorably with international data.published_or_final_versio

Late tricuspid surgery: predicting outcome with computed tomography
Tricuspid regurgitation can progressively worsen years after left-sided heart valve surgery, requiring surgical intervention for which the prognostic factors are unclear. This study aimed to assess the prediction of surgical outcome using right ventricular function obtained from computed tomography. We prospectively enrolled 24 patients who underwent isolated tricuspid repair or replacement from 2005 to 2008. Right ventricular computed tomography was carried out before surgery. The primary endpoint was survival with symptomatic improvement after one year. Twelve patients survived with improvement of at least one New York Heart Association functional class, and 12 died or had no symptomatic improvement. All baseline characteristics, echocardiogram data, and surgical details were similar in both groups. Right ventricular computed tomography parameters including end-systolic volume, indexed end-systolic volume, end-diastolic volume, and indexed end-diastolic volume were significantly different between the two groups. We concluded that right ventricular function assessed by computed tomography can predict the surgical outcome in patients undergoing surgery for isolated late tricuspid regurgitation.link_to_subscribed_fulltex

A gold(III) porphyrin complex with antitumor properties targets the Wnt/β-catenin pathway
Gold(III) complexes have shown promise as antitumor agents, but their clinical usefulness has been limited by their poor stability under physiological conditions. A novel gold(III) porphyrin complex [5-hydroxyphenyl-10,15,20- triphenylporphyrinato gold(III) chloride (gold-2a)] with improved aqueous stability showed 100-fold to 3,000-fold higher cytotoxicity than platinum-based cisplatin and IC50 values in the nanomolar range in a panel of human breast cancer cell lines. Intraductal injections of gold-2a significantly suppressed mammary tumor growth in nude mice. These effects are attributed, in part, to attenuation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling through inhibition of class I histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity. These data, in combination with computer modeling, suggest that gold-2a may represent a promising class of anticancer HDAC inhibitor preferentially targeting tumor cells with aberrant Wnt/β-catenin signaling. ©2010 AACR.link_to_OA_fulltex
