Optical instruments for measuring leaf area index in low vegetation : application in Arctic ecosystems

Despite the fact that many methods have been developed to quantify LAI, both directly and indirectly, leaf area index remains difficult to quantify accurately, owing to large spatial and temporal variability. The gap-fraction technique is widely used to estimate the LAI indirectly. However, for low-stature vegetation, the gap-fraction sensor either cannot get totally underneath the plant canopy, thereby missing part of the leaf area present, or is too close to the individual leaves of the canopy, which leads to a large distortion of the LAI estimate. We set out to develop a methodology for easy and accurate nondestructive assessment of the variability of LAI in low-stature vegetation. We developed and tested the methodology in an arctic landscape close to Abisko, Sweden.
The LAI of arctic vegetation could be estimated accurately and rapidly by combining field measurements of canopy reflectance (NDVI) and light penetration through the canopy (gap-fraction analysis using a LI-COR LAI-2000). By combining the two methodologies, the limitations of each could be circumvented, and a significantly increased accuracy of the LAI estimates was obtained. The combination of an NDVI sensor for sparser vegetation and a LAI-2000 for denser vegetation could explain 81% of the variance of LAI measured by destructive harvest. We used the method to quantify the spatial variability and the associated uncertainty of leaf area index in a small catchment area.This research was funded by U.S. National Science Foundation

清代今文經學復興後,群經大義走向《公羊》化。劉逢祿、宋翔鳳、
戴望、劉恭冕、俞樾、康有為等人亦援引《公羊》義說解《論語》,而有
《論語》述何之作。故本論文即欲探討上述諸位學者《論語》著作所展現
的學術風貌,及其於經學史上的意義。本論文之作,共分為九章:第一章
先述研究動機、重點,並闡明全文之研究範圍及各章節之旨趣。第二章探
討清代今文經學復興的外緣與內因,並見《公羊》學說的歷史沿革。第三
章劉逢祿《論語述何》乃為追述何氏之意而作,故援引《公羊》三科九旨
以釋《論語》,並以今文學之觀點詮釋關於「學」的種種觀念。第四章宋
翔鳳《論語說義》除俱考證特色、素王與三統、三世之思想外。宋氏亦援
引《易》、《老》思想以說解《論語》,以見其欲會通三者之用意。第五
章戴望《論語注》的體例較之劉逢祿《論語述何》、宋翔鳳《論語說義》
顯得完備。其所呈現的三科九旨思想,以及經權思想亦是引《公羊》義例
以說《論語》。第六章由劉恭冕《何休注訓論語述》所附之案語,以瞭解
其護衛或匡正何休《公羊》義之處。第七章俞樾《何劭公論語義》乃為恢
復何休《論語注》而作,由其所附之按語,足以見其闡發何氏之義旨。第
八章康有為注《論語》乃欲以今文學之觀點重新詮釋《論語》,三世進化
說為康氏的重要思想之一。並論及「學」、「仁」與「禮」的諸多觀念。
第九章回溯何休曾否注訓《論語》之相關問題,並檢討諸《論語》述何之
作的得失及影響

Assessment of Self-Archiving in Institutional Repositories: Depositorship and Full-Text Availability
This research evaluates the success of open access self-archiving in several well-known institutional repositories. Two assessment factors have been applied to examine the current practice of self-archiving: depositorship and the availability of full text. This research discovers that the rate of author self-archiving is low and that the majority of documents have been deposited by a librarian or administrative staff. Similarly, the rate of full-text availability is relatively low, except for Australian repositories. By identifying different practices of self-archiving, repository managers can create new strategies for the operation of their repositories and the development of archiving policies
Evaluation of the performance of a dengue outbreak detection tool for China
An outbreak detection and response system, using time series moving percentile method based on historical data, in China has been used for identifying dengue fever outbreaks since 2008. For dengue fever outbreaks reported from 2009 to 2012, this system achieved a sensitivity of 100%, a specificity of 99.8% and a median time to detection of 3 days, which indicated that the system was a useful decision tool for dengue fever control and risk-management programs in China
