The cave-sanctuary of St Michael located on the Gargano promontory is the most important place of St Michael’s worship of the Latin West since late antiquity, destination of pilgrimages from the fifth century to the present day. Since the origins, the cave and the Gargano stone took had a strong symbolic-religious value. Looking for healing, salvation and protection was also the basis of the rituals that marked the pilgrimage to the cave. The ascent to the mountain also participated in the religious symbolism, involving the surrounding environment. This paper aims to propose a reflection on the symbolic and anthropological meaning of the cave and on the evolution of the socio-religious dynamics caused by it, connected to attitudes and strategies of resilience

Since 1991 in Vaste, inland of Otranto, archaeological excavations are bringing to light an important paleochristian complex including a church and a cemetery dating back to 4th-6th century A.D. The close interaction between the building and the graves possibly indicates that the church was founded as a martyrium, where the spoils of a holy martyr were worshipped. After the greco-gothic war a new bigger church was rebuilt over the former. The paper focuses on the analysis of the objects coming from the tombs as personal property of the deads or ritual accessories linked to Christian ceremonies: they should remind funerary banquets and baptism simbology. The whole cemetery can be referred to middle to high classes landowners, as shown by grave goods and anthropological data. In particular the artefacts include glass and pottery vases, gold, silver and bronze jewellery, bone pins and hair combs. At least 30 tombs contain bronze coins as sign of the traditional tip to Charon, souls ferryman. Among pottery vases the presence of lamps, dishes and bowls referring to oriental and northern African productions is particularly significant; some glass items come from Egypt and Siro-Palestinian region

Slow rubber pyrolysis was performed at 300–500 ◦C in a horizontal batch mechanically fluidized reactor with 30–60 min holding time, and the products were characterized. The char (yield = 50%-wt) exhibited a high heating value (HHV) around 30 MJ/kg, comparable with bituminous coke, and 84%-wt Carbon. The gas products (yield = 24–31%) had a composition dependent on temperature: 21%-v ethylene, 46%-v propane, and 11%-v butane at 300 ◦C; over 20%-v hydrogen and methane at 400 ◦C; at 500 ◦C hydrogen ranged 46-69%-v and methane 21-36%-v. Oil products (yield = 17–22% yield) consisted o

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

A new benzoxazine compound blocks KATP channels in pancreatic beta cells: molecular basis for tissue selectivity in vitro and hypoglycaemic action in vivo

Abstract BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The 2-propyl-1,4 benzoxazine (AM10) shows a peculiar behaviour in skeletal muscle, inhibiting or opening the ATP-sensitive K(+) (KATP) channel in the absence and presence of ATP, respectively. We focused on tissue selectivity and mechanism of action of AM10 by testing its effects on pancreatic KATP channels by means of both in vitro and in vivo investigations. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: In vitro, patch-clamp recordings were performed in native pancreatic beta cells and in tsA201 cells expressing the Kir6.2 Delta C36 channel. In vivo, an intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test was performed in normal mice. KEY RESULTS: In contrast with what observed in the skeletal muscle, AM10, in whole cell perforated mode, did not augment KATP current (I(KATP)) of native beta cells but it inhibited it in a concentration-dependent manner (IC(50): 11.5 nM; maximal block: 60%). Accordingly, in current clamp recordings, a concentration-dependent membrane depolarization was observed. On excised patches, AM10 reduced the open-time probability of KATP channels without altering their single channel conductance; the same effect was observed in the presence of trypsin in the bath solution. Moreover, AM10 inhibited, in an ATP-independent manner, the K(+) current resulting from expressed Kir6.2 Delta C36 (maximal block: 60% at 100 microM; IC(50): 12.7 nM) corroborating an interaction with Kir. In vivo, AM10 attenuated the glycemia increase following a glucose bolus in a dose-dependent manner, without, at the dose tested, inducing fasting hypoglycaemia. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Altogether, these results help to gain insight into a new class of tissue specific KATP channel modulators

In this work, selections of seven international hop varieties and three craft beers obtained from them were analyzed by SPME-GC/MS techniques with the aim to describe their volatile chemical profile. The brewing process was also reported. Furthermore, the hop extracts and beers were investigated to determine their flavonoid and polyphenol content and to evaluate their antioxidant power by DPPH and ABTS assays. The findings showed the presence of compounds belonging to different chemical classes such as monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, alcohols, esters and fatty acids. In particular, sesquiterpenes were the main compounds with β-caryophyllene (from 1.7 to 16.2%) and humulene (from 10.8 to 43.9%) as the major components in all varieties of dried hop cones investigated. On the contrary, with the exception for the Pacific sample, monoterpenes were the class of compounds that were more abundant in the hop extracts and, among these, β-myrcene appeared to be the predominant constituent (from 31.8 to 71.4%). Regarding the craft beers obtained by adding these hop varieties, some differences in the qualitative and quantitative volatile composition have been found. All hop samples showed a high scavenging potential against both radicals. In the case of DPPH, the obtained IC50 values ranged from 0.027 to 0.047 mg/mL while they varied between 0.023 and 0.134 mg/mL by the ABTS assay. A positive correlation was found with polyphenol and flavonoid contents. Among beer samples, ACD was the richest one in polyphenols (292.0 mg GAE/100 mL beer) and flavonoids (5.8 mg QE/100 mL beer) and the most powerful against DPPH• and ABTS•+ radicals with IC50 values equal to 4.969 and 0.198 v/v%, respectively

    No full text
