Greek wh-Questions and the Phonology of Intonation
The intonation of Greek wh-questions consists of a rise-fall followed by a low plateau and a final rise. Using acoustic data, we show (i) that the exact contour shape depends on the length of the question, and (ii) that the position of the first peak and the low plateau depends on the position of the stressed syllables, and shows predictable adjustments in alignment, depending on the proximity of adjacent tonal targets. Models that specify the F0 of all syllables, or models that specify F0 by superposing contour shapes for shorter and longer domains, cannot account for such fine-grained lawful variation except by using ad hoc tonal specifications, which, in turn, do not allow for phonological generalisations about contours applying to utterances of greatly different lengths. In contrast, our findings follow easily from an autosegmental-metrical approach to intonational phonology, according to which melodies may contain long F0 stretches derived by interpolation between specified targets associated with metrically strong syllables and prosodic boundaries

Mutations in different components of FGF signaling in LADD syndrome.
Contains fulltext :
50020.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)Lacrimo-auriculo-dento-digital (LADD) syndrome is characterized by lacrimal duct aplasia, malformed ears and deafness, small teeth and digital anomalies. We identified heterozygous mutations in the tyrosine kinase domains of the genes encoding fibroblast growth factor receptors 2 and 3 (FGFR2, FGFR3) in LADD families, and in one further LADD family, we detected a mutation in the gene encoding fibroblast growth factor 10 (FGF10), a known FGFR ligand. These findings increase the spectrum of anomalies associated with abnormal FGF signaling
Outcomes After Ladd Procedures for Intestinal Malrotation in Newborns with Heterotaxy Syndrome
Intestinal malrotation may be asymptomatic in patients with heterotaxy syndrome (HS), and whether these newborns benefit from prophylactic Ladd procedures is unknown. This study sought to uncover nationwide outcomes of newborns with HS receiving Ladd procedures.
Newborns with malrotation were identified from the Nationwide Readmission Database (2010-2014) and stratified into those with and without HS utilizing ICD-9CM codes for situs inversus (759.3), asplenia or polysplenia (759.0), and/or dextrocardia (746.87). Outcomes were analyzed using standard statistical tests.
4797 newborns with malrotation were identified, of which 16% had HS. Ladd procedures were performed in 70% overall and more common in those without heterotaxy (73% vs. 56% HS). Ladd procedures in newborns with heterotaxy were associated with higher complications compared to those without HS including surgical site reopening (8% vs. 1%), sepsis (9% vs. 2%), infections (19% vs. 11%), venous thrombosis (9% vs. 1%), and prolonged mechanical ventilation (39% vs. 22%), all p < 0.001. HS newborns were less frequently readmitted with bowel obstructions (0% vs. 4% without HS, p < 0.001) with no readmissions for volvulus in either group.
Ladd procedures in newborns with heterotaxy were associated with increased complications and cost without differences in rates of volvulus and bowel obstruction on readmission.

Christine Ladd and the form of syllogisms
Christine Ladd was a promising mathematician who converted to logic and philosophy under the guidance of Charles S. Peirce. Her contribution to the algebra of logic is known among historians of logic, and her famous “antilogism” received acknowledgement from the algebraic logicians of the time. But the interest of Ladd’s logical system is not restricted to the development of Boole’s project. Concentrating on the application of Ladd’s algebra to the analysis of syllogisms, I highlight Ladd’s innovations with respect to the Aristotelian-Scholastic tradition: I show how Ladd abandons the old point of view (predication), in favour of the new algebraic one (combination of terms), with the interesting feature of giving preference to symmetrical ways of combination. In Ladd’s logical system, both the traditional figures and moods, and the traditional validity principles are translated into one single formula for every valid syllogism, which exhibits the inconsistency of affirming the premises while negating the conclusion. This result not only involves Peirce’s ideal of iconicity, but is also the basis for an innovative view of logic in which discussing, rather than concluding, captures the true form of reasoning
THOUGHTS ON BUILDING AN ACADEMIC CAREER
We have many routes to success in agricultural economics: extension education, resident teaching, advising, research, and public service. In selecting problems to study we must be sensitive to needs of all our clientele. Several production economics concepts are relevant to allocating our own efforts. Noticing, recognizing, and experiencing surprise aid scientific discovery. We need to use heuristics, intuition, deduction, and induction, though consideration of science's ideal and real types shows that all these mental processes are fallible. We need special theories that have broad application. Replication deserves high priority. A few thoughts on the manuscript review process are presented.Teaching/Communication/Extension/Profession,
