This thesis is a study on De Mortibus Persecutorum, written by Lactantius who lived in c. 240-325. Lactantius wrote the ways of death of the emperors against Christianity of his age in this book. The main purpose of the author is to remind the presence of Divine Judgment for future generations by handling the history of the empire. After Lactantius presents a brief summary of the emperors from Nero to Aurelianus in Rome, he illustrates the persecution of the emperors to Christians and God?s punishment for those emperors. The depiction that starts with Diocletianus? ascending to the throne, goes on with tetrarchia?s project and continues with the sovereignty of Constantinus provides a first hand source for the ancient history research. Besides the persecution of the emperors, Lactantius gives detailed information about the socio-cultural, political development and religious change that appeared in the period of the Great Persecution

Lactantius and the Doctrine of Providence
Thesis advisor: Stephen F. BrownThis dissertation examines the doctrine of providence as it appears in the works of the North African Latin apologist, L. Caecilius Firmianus Lactantius (c.245 - c.325). In the early fourth century the Roman Empire was struggling to come to terms with its own religious self-identity. While the persecutions under Diocletian were still raging, the rhetorician Lactantius authored several apologetic works in order to advocate for Christianity's inclusion into the traditional Roman culture. Lactantius' apologetic goal is twofold: 'to defend and build up' (defendere et instituere) (cf. DI 5.4.3). The apologist is not merely concerned with the tearing down of fallacious arguments, but also with the constructing of a positive Christian theology; in Lactantius' own words, with the totius doctrinae substantiam (DI 5.4.3). Throughout his apologetic corpus the doctrine of providence functions as Lactantius' grundaxiom; a foundation upon which he can construct his own positive Christian theology. At the same time, the near unanimity among philosophers as to the existence of providence allowed Lactantius to engage his non-Christian audience through a concept of shared philosophical inheritance. By employing the doctrine of providence to support and integrate his entire theological system, therefore, Lactantius has made the linchpin of his theology a doctrine which finds common ground among both Christians and non-Christians.Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2014.Submitted to: Boston College. Gewalt in Laktanz’ ›De mortibus persecutorum‹
Violence is a central topic in De mortibus persecutorum, one of the most significant sources on the Tetrarchy’s persecution of Christians. Gianna Zipp examines this piece of writing as a literary complete works and meticulously analyzes its conception using the method of close reading. She shows how Lactantius credibly portrays the violent Tetrarchs coming to their horrific end as determined by God
