    An evaluation of vendor selection models from a Total Cost of Ownership perspective.

    No full text
    Many different vendor selection models have been published in the purchasing literature. However there has been no systematic approach to compare the relative efficiency of the systems. In this paper we propose to use the concept of Total Cost of Ownership as a basis for comparing vendor selection models. We illustrate the comparison with real life data set of the purchasing problem of ball bearings at Cockerill Sambre, a Belgian multinational company in the steel industry. Mathematical programming models outperform rating models and multiple item models generate better results than single item models from a Total Cost of Ownership perspective for this specific case study.Evaluation; Models; Selection;

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Le stagioni del paesaggio. Un progetto per Labro

    LAUREA MAGISTRALENel rivolgere uno sguardo progettuale ai territori interni, l’ambivalenza tra topos letterario e luogo fisico abitato rimane un punto critico. Labro, un borgo nell’alta Sabina, rappresenta bene tale duplicità: conserva immutati la sua immagine e il suo carattere, ma è interessato da fenomeni di progressivo abbandono che si registrano in molti centri ad esso affini. La vita a Labro oscilla periodicamente: durante l’estate, il borgo è abitato da visitatori e turisti, d’inverno vi restano circa venti residenti. Tale polarizzazione stagionale è così drastica perché il borgo non offre servizi in grado di supportare la vita sia di chi vi risiede stabilmente, sia di chi vi sosta occasionalmente. Un’indagine sulla struttura e sul funzionamento del territorio circostante, evidenzia infatti come la presenza dei servizi nei diversi borghi costruisca un rapporto di interdipendenza tra un centro abitato e un altro. In questo senso, il nuovo Piano Regolatore di Labro, con la proposta di inserire altra residenza in cinque lotti all’interno delle mura, non coglie il potenziale ruolo di questi spazi in un’ottica più ampia. Il progetto interpreta la possibilità di costruire nuovi edifici per strutturare un programma composito, rispondendo alle dinamiche già in atto sul territorio. Si individuano due aree di intervento: la prima è una radura ai piedi del borgo, oggi utilizzata come parcheggio comunale, dove è presente la fermata del bus, la seconda è costituita dai cinque lotti indicati dal Piano Regolatore. Il salto di scala tra i due ambiti determina una diversa intensità del programma: entro le mura, gli interventi si misurano con la dimensione dell’abitare il borgo; fuori le mura e più legato all’infrastruttura, un nuovo edificio sportivo si confronta con l’abitare la rete. Riflettendo sull’architettura del borgo e riconoscendone l’unitarietà e l’omogeneità come valori fondativi, il significato della nuova costruzione sta nel suo rapporto di ambiguo mimetismo. Se da lontano l’immagine complessiva del borgo viene conservata, da vicino ciascun intervento sviluppa ogni volta un proprio carattere, legato al suo ruolo e al suo rapporto con gli edifici circostanti, con il paesaggio.Looking at the internal territories, the ambivalence between literary topos and inhabited physical place, remains a critical point. Labro, a small hilltop village in Sabina, is a good example of this duplicity: it has in fact preserved its image and its character, but it is affected by the same phenomena of progressive abandonment recorded in many similar villages. Life in Labro fluctuates periodically: during the summer, the village is inhabited by visitors and tourists, in winter there are about twenty residents left. This seasonal polarisation is so drastic because the village does not offer any services that support the life of both those who reside permanently, and those who stop during the summer season. From a survey on the structure and functioning of the surrounding territory, it is evident that the presence of services in different villages builds a relationship of interdependence between a town and another. In this sense, the new General Plan of Labro, proposing to add residential buildings in five vacant lots, does not seem to capture the potential role of these spaces in a broader perspective. The project interprets the design new buildings as an opportunity to structure a composite program, responding to the already existing dynamics. The strategy identifies two areas of intervention: the first is a clearing at the foot of the village, now used as a municipal parking lot, where there is the bus stop, the second consists of the five lots indicated by the General Plan. The different scale between the two areas determines a different intensity of the program: within the walls, the interventions are geared towards the life within Labro, while outside the walls and more related to the infrastructure, a new sports building is confronted with living in the network of villages. Reflecting on the fascinating architecture of the village and recognising its unity and homogeneity as founding values, the meaning of the new buildings is found in their ambiguous camouflage. If the overall image of the village is preserved from afar, each intervention develops its own character, linked to its role and its relationship with the surrounding buildings, with the landscape

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    This work is about the roles of Author, Publisher and Bookseller in Book development in Nigeria. The paper started by delving into the history of Book Publishing in Nigeria after which it proceeded by defining who an author, a publisher, and a bookseller is and expatiated on the indispensable roles of these key actors in Nigerian Book Industry and in the emerging Information Society. Furthermore, the various constraints to book development were identified while the paper advised on how the Book Industry can be further promoted in Nigeria. However, the paper concluded and made recommendations on how the Book sector can help in enhancing scholarship in the country
