Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Vegetation cover of Bacuranao and Guanabo Basins. A glance to its management
Los estudios relacionados con los cambios progresivos en la cobertura vegetal y de uso de suelo han cobrado importancia en la investigación ambiental, permiten evaluar las tendencias espacio-temporales de procesos como la deforestación y degradación ambiental, provocadas por actividades humanas. En el presente trabajo, se hace una descripción de los principales tipos de formaciones vegetales y se identifican 5 clases de cobertura vegetal predominantes en las cuencas Bacuranao y Guanabo, así como su distribución espacial. La investigación se llevó a cabo mediante el empleo combinado de observaciones de campo y fuentes documentales (literales, estadísticas, cartográficas), las técnicas de teledetección y SIG. Se constató que las afectaciones en la cobertura vegetal se agravaron como consecuencia del proceso de asimilación económica de estos territorios que trajo consigo entre otras la deforestación, la fragmentación y la presencia de especies invasoras. Para la confección del mapa de cobertura vegetal se emplearon imágenes Rapid Eyes (2014), con una resolución de 5 metros, a las que se les aplicó una clasificación supervisada dirigida con un clasificador de probabilidad máxima (Maximun Likelihood). Las zonas mejor conservadas se sitúan al sur del área de estudio y la cuenca del río Guanabo presenta una situación ligeramente favorable con respecto a la del río Bacuranao. La información sobre el uso de cobertura vegetal, es esencial para la planificación y ejecución de planes de ordenamiento territorial con el propósito de satisfacer la creciente demanda de las necesidades básicas del hombre, así como su bienestar.Studies related to the progressive changes of vegetation cover and use of soil have gain great importance in the environmental research, since they allow to assess the space-time tendencies of processes such as deforestation and environmental degradation, caused by human activities. In this study, the main types of plant formations and their spatial distribution are described and identified in 5 classes of vegetation cover that prevail in Bacuranao and Guanabo Basins. The research was carried out through the combined use of field observations and source documents (literary, statistical, cartographic.), remote sensing technics and the GIS (Geographical Information System). The increase of the impact on vegetation cover was determined on this study, impact caused by the process of assimilation of these territories, which brought along deforestation, fragmentation, and the presence of invasive species. In order to map the vegetation cover, Rapid Eyes (2014) images were used, with a resolution of 5 meters, to which a supervised classification was applied by using a Maximum Likelihood classifier. The best preserved areas are located south of the study area, and the Guanabo River Basin presents a slightly better situation with respect to Bacuranao River. Information on the use of vegetation cover is essential for designing and implementing land-use planning with the purpose of satisfying the increasing demand of men’s basic needs and their well-being
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Los indicadores para la evaluación ambiental integral de ecosistemas acuáticos como asunto clave en materia de ecosistemas degradados: “Desarrollo de metodologías, indicadores ambientales y programas para la evaluación ambiental integral y la restauración de ecosistemas degradados”
La Red CYTED “Desarrollo de metodologías, indicadores ambientales y programas para la evaluación ambiental integral y la restauración de ecosistemas degradados”, ha dado continuidad práctica a la elaboración de indicadores PEIR aplicados a los ecosistemas degradados, pero adentrándose en uno de los aspectos de mayor complejidad e interés en Iberoamérica, que es el caso de los humedales. La experiencia está orientada a la realización de Evaluaciones Ambientales Integrales (EAI) basadas en el enfoque GEO (Global Environmental Outlook), constituye una herramienta eficaz para monitorear continuamente el estado del medio ambiente a escala global, regional y local. Un momento determinante durante las evaluaciones EAI consiste en la elaboración de indicadores apropiados para evaluar fuerzas motrices y presiones, estados e impactos. Ello se debe a que el análisis de las relaciones causa efecto entre los cambios de estado, sus causas y consecuencias tiene generalmente un carácter cualitativo. Surge por tanto la necesidad de valorar objetivamente en términos cuantitativos ¿qué le está pasando al medio ambiente?, ¿por qué está sucediendo?, ¿cuáles son las consecuencias para el medio ambiente y la sociedad? y ¿cuán eficaces son las medidas aplicadas? Los indicadores permiten no solo ilustrar y validar el contenido de las evaluaciones sino también comprender objetivamente en términos cuantitativos. Otro elemento importante es que los indicadores permiten realizar estudios comparativos de ecosistemas funcionalmente diferentes y evaluar con herramientas metodológicas comunes. En el presente trabajo se resume con diferentes problemas de degradación, entre los que figuran glaciares, morrenas y páramos, bosque húmedo tropical, manglares, pastos marinos y arrecifes, zonas estuarinas y albuferas, humedales interiores y marino costeros, y sistemas lacustres. Los indicadores han sido elaborados con base en las problemáticas prioritarias utilizando el marco conceptual fuerzas motrices - presión - estado - impactos -respuestas (FMPEIR), que vincula las relaciones entre la actividad humana y el estado del medio ambiente.Fil: Barranco Rodríguez, Grisel.
