Time-variant signal encryption by lensless dual random phase encoding applied to fiber optic links
A lensless dual random phase encoding technique in the temporal domain is proposed and analyzed to evaluate its potential application for secure data transmission, mainly for short-haul fiber optic links. The different signal broadening effects produced by each stage of the encoding process in both time and frequency domains are analyzed by using the Wigner distribution function to take into account the fiber’s multiplexing capabilities. Thus, quasi-white noise with a well-defined bandwidth is used in the encoding process to limit the bandwidth of the encrypted signal. Numerical simulations revealed good system performance, indicating that this multiplexing encryption method could be a good alternative to other well-established techniques.Fil: Cuadrado Laborde, Christian Ariel. Mechanochemical Reactions in Fe2O3–M (M: Al, Ti)
The production of metal–ceramic nanodispersion by mechanical milling of powders through the displacement reaction Fe2O3+M→Fe+M-oxide (with M: Al, Ti) was studied. The reaction progress with milling time was followed by recording the temperature and pressure during the process. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy at the intermediate and final stages. In both cases self-sustained reactions were observed with different activation times. The results confirm that mechanical work at room temperature yields the reduction of hematite by Ti and Al. The final oxides were identified as Ti2O3 and Al2O3, respectively. The dependence of the intermediate and final stages on the milling conditions and the starting composition will be discussed.Fil: Cuadrado Laborde, Christian Ariel. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Joint transform correlator optical encryption system: Extensions of the recorded encrypted signal and its inverse Fourier transform
In this work we study the joint transform correlator setup, finding two analytical expressions for the extensions of the joint power spectrum and its inverse Fourier transform. We found that an optimum efficiency is reached, when the bandwidth of the key code is equal to the sum of the bandwidths of the image plus the random phase mask (RPM). The quality of the decryption is also affected by the ratio between the bandwidths of the RPM and the input image, being better as this ratio increases. In addition, the effect on the decrypted image when the detection area is lower than the encrypted signal extension was analyzed. We illustrate these results through several numerical examples.Fil: Galizzi, Gustavo Ernesto. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Time-Variant Signal Encryption by Dual Random Phase Encoding Setups Applied to Fiber Optics Links
Spatial optical techniques have shown great potential in the field of information security to encode high-security images. Among them, the dual random phase encoding method (DRPE) has received much attention, since it was proposed by Réfrégier and Javidi at the middle 1990s. Since then, a number of works in the field were proposed introducing different variations of this technique. On the other hand, the space-time duality refers to the close mathematical analogy that exists between the equations describing the paraxial diffraction of beams in space and the first-order temporal dispersion of optical pulses in dielectric media. It is generally used for extending to the temporal domain well-known properties of spatial optical configurations. In this work it is developed a new approach to the secure data transmission problem in fiber optic links. We propose the encoding of time-varying optical signals, mainly for short-haul applications, with encryption methods that can be considered the time domain counterparts of the DRPE, and two of its more frequent variations: the fractional Fourier transform DRPE and the Fresnel transform encoding. Further, as performance is a very relevant subject in fiber optic links, we will analyze mechanisms to produce time limited, as well as bandwidth limited, encoded signals. To this end, the different signal broadenings produced by each stage of the encoding process in both, time and frequency domains, are analyzed by using the Wigner distribution function formalism, and general expressions for the time width, as well as the bandwidth, at all encryption stages are obtained. The numerical simulations show the good system performances, and a comparison between the different encryption processes is made. Furthermore, the robustness of the proposed methods is analyzed against the variation of typical parameters of the encryption-decryption setup. Finally, the implementation of this proposal with current photonic technology is discussed.Fil: Cuadrado Laborde, Christian Ariel. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
