In this short note, the author, a specialist of the Indonesian painter Raden Saleh, endeavours to track the history of several paintings made by the artist during the years of his stay in France. She comes to the conclusion that the large painting entitled “Boschbrand” had been a part of the collections of the king of Holland and therefore that this painting, of which nothing is presently known, might be looked for there. On the other hand, basing herself on detailed archived documents, she can assert that another canvas “Javanische Gegend, wo Tiger eine Gruppe Reisende belauschen”, which appeared in a Hong Kong auction in 2005, must be the one given by the painter to the Grand Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.Scalliet Marie-Odette.
Marie-Odette Scalliet
The seventeenth century Dutch artist Andries Beeckman, travelling to Java in the 1650s as soldier of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), has long been known for his famous oil painting of a lively market scene in Batavia, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Recently, the author (re-)discovered an important collection of fifty-five opaque water colours (gouache) drawings in the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal, Paris, formerly in the possession of Antoine René d'Argenson, marquis de Paulmy (1722-1787). This find at once greatly multiplies the number of known works by Beeckman. The charming series of drawings portray a great array of peoples then living in Batavia, such as a Javanese, a Mardijker, a mestizzo, several Chinese, a Japanese, slave women engaged in menial tasks, and an Ambonese in war dance. This preliminary article anticipates a work of greater length on Beeckman, his whereabouts in Batavia, and the Paris collection.Scalliet Marie-Odette.
This thesis constitutes the first attempt to catalogue the paintings of Giulio Cesare Procaccini (Bologna 1574 - Milan 1625).
Introductory chapters address the artist's critical fortune, his life and his activity as painter, the latter also reconsidered bearing in mind his graphic and sculptural oeuvre, which played a significant role in his multi-structured personality. Constant contextual reference is made to Milanese painting of the early seventeenth century, of which Procaccini was one of the major exponents together with Cerano, Morazzone and their younger contemporary Daniele Crespi.
These texts are followed by a catalogue of works, chronologically arranged and accompanied by references to copies and engravings. Entries on what are accepted as autograph works are followed by a section about certain compositions, which - given their widespread success - are in all likelihood copies of lost prototypes by Procaccini, while the section that follows deals with paintings that have been rejected from the catalogue of autograph works.
With a view to offering a useful tool for future scholarship on Giulio Cesare Procaccini, the author also provides a list of lost or untraced works recorded in historical sources, and the final part of the thesis, in addition to a bibliography, contains a register of documents listing all that is known thus far about the master's life, year by year

The author has undertaken a detailed biography and the catalogue raisonné of the Javanese painter Raden Saleh whose personality remains obscure despite his fame. This work in progress has already led to several publications in Archipel which relate his apprenticeship under the Belgian artist Payen in Java, his studies and his first years as a professional painter in Holland as well as his sojourns in several European capitals. In this new article, she scrutinizes the short period from 1852 till 1858 when Raden Saleh returned to his native island of Java after an absence of some 20 years. With the help of the Dutch archives and especially Raden Saleh’s personal letters in Malay, one can follow the painter while rediscovering his country and his family. He, who had officially been named "King’s painter" and had met kings and princes in Europe endeavored to find the place he deserved in colonial society. He had to face the cavils of the administration, to adopt a dress neither European nor Javanese and to provide his needy family’s wants. During this period, though he dreamed of noble artistic subjects, he was compelled to paint many portraits of colonial personalities, native administrators and opulent businessmen of Chinese and Armenian origin.Scalliet Marie-Odette.
The important role of the Beaucaire Fair in the history of pharmacy in Provence. The author shows how the Beaucaire Fair, whose history is closely linked with that of the apothecaries of Provence, was encouraged by various factors and played an important role in the business of drugs and medications. He stresses the points concerning product packaging and the repression of frauds, and reveals that the Revolution did not put an end to the existence of the Fair.Callamand Odette. Problèmes de méthode d'une analyse historique (I). Le Valenciennois industriel (1913-1950). Cohérence et incohérence d'un espace géonomique
Methodological problems of an historical analysis industry in the region of Valenciennes (1913-1950) : consistency and inconsistency of an geonomic space.
In this article, the author presents the method she thinks she can use for the study of an important economie region in France -. the region of Valenciennes from 1913 to 1950. The author draws her inspiration from the mathematical models proposed by contemporary economists. She studies : the concept of economic space which leads to the matrix algebra applied to the life of a region; the concept of polarized space, of leading or derived area ; the concept of flow. The author insists on the products flows and the money flows which characterize this region, and she splits the latter into wage flows and capital flows (earned dividends, invested capital). She tries to discover the reason why after the 1930's, capitalists have inverted regional flows (more money transferred than invested).
This study cannot aspire to a great mathematical accuracy, the concepts of real and fiscal depreciation being fundamentally different. However, one can make an attempt at some approximations which will permit to carry ouf some of the input-output calculations often proposee. The author is very doubtful about the validity of the matrix algebra applied to Economics (is the regional space a vector space?). She brings more interest to the theory of graphs of fluence (also called theory of graphs of transfer).Problèmes de méthode d'une analyse historique.
Plus intéressante lui apparaît la théorie de graphes de .fluence, aussi appelée théorie des graphes de. transfert. purpose, in spite of some drawbacks (its location, the lack of near by markets, the inadequacy of the means of conveyance...).
Its launching by Decazes in the 1820's constituted a genuine innovation and Decazeville became rapidly one of the leading metallurgic centers in France. But the exhaustion of the iron mines, financial difficulties, the lack of diversification in the production made it difficult for Decazeville to get successfully over the technical revolution in the steel production. During the last third of the XIXth century, Decazeville was gradually overshadowed by other rising enterprises and areas. The situation improved at the beginning of the XXth century, and especialey during World War I, but the interwar period witnessed a further decline, due to a lack of modernization. After World War II, the metallurgic and mining activities disappeared almost completely in front of the competition of new sources of energy and enterprises where production costs were appreciably lower. As tue can see, Decazeville is a good example of the birth, life, and death of a leading area.
years envisaged initially. Herself a victim of colonial prejudices when she began her work on Raden Saleh's biography in Batavia prior to the Second World War, Loos-Haaxman emphasized the generosity and "tinted laxism" of the Dutch and went on to help forge the image of a spoiled child with expensive tastes who repeatedly put his guardians' patience to the test, yet without denying the artistic abilities of Raden Saleh. With the passing of time, it is easy to see that Loos-Haaxman fell into the pitfall of stereotypes, according to which the colonized subject is a big child which the paternalist colonizer must guide and spare at the same time. Although it is a seemingly impossible task to bore the complex personality of Raden Saleh, there is no doubt that he had an insatiable thirst for learning and was a hard worker. Pushed by his sole driving ambition to become an achieved artist, Raden Saleh used the weapons at his disposal in a system in which he was to some extent a hostage, so as to achieve this set goal. The truth of the matter is that the Dutch authorities became increasingly worried about the political stakes with regard to their protégé, and concluded after several years that it was absolutely undesirable for him to return to Java. The calculated generosity of the Dutch officials, whether at The Hague, or later in Germany and Paris, had in reality but one goal, namely to keep discreet control over their exemplary guest and to prevent him from wanting to return to his own country.
While clarifying and discussing the political motivation of the government's policy, the author also discusses in length the formative period of Raden Saleh in the Hague, his teachers Cornelis Kruseman and Andreas Schelfhout, his meeting with the trainer of wild animals Henri Martin and the subsequent orientation which his inspiration took in his first canvases of lions in combat, on his participation in national exhibitions and his artistic production, of which a list (as complete as presently possible) is given in an appendix.Scalliet Marie-Odette.
